Deadly catch: Filipino vlogger dies after eating ‘devil crab’ on camera

Ms Emma Amit, a food content creator, is seen in her final video post eating a crab that contains a potent mix of neurotoxins.

A Philippine food vlogger has died after filming herself eating one of the country’s most poisonous reef crabs.

Ms Emma Amit, 51, who had more than 200,000 followers on her Instagram account, filmed herself foraging along the mangroves near her seaside home in Puerto Princesa, on the island province of Palawan, plucking snails and prying brightly mottled crabs from coral crevices.

In a video posted on Feb 4, she holds up one of the crabs – its shell splashed with ominous reds and browns – before dropping it into a pot of simmering coconut milk. She tastes it, smiles and continues eating.

The crab was Zosimus aeneus, known across the Philippines as the “devil crab”, a reef-dwelling species with flesh that contains a potent mix of neurotoxins, including tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin.

Marine biologists consider it among the most poisonous crabs in the Indo-Pacific. Cooking does not neutralise the toxins. In severe cases, the devil crab can paralyse the consumer’s muscles, shut down his breathing and kill him within hours.

According to Philippine broadcaster ABS-CBN, Ms Amit lost consciousness shortly after consuming the crab and was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead two days later. A friend who had eaten the crab also died.

When village officials visited Ms Amit’s home in Puerto Princesa, they found a scatter of discarded shells in the rubbish. The shells were vivid and unmistakable.

Comment I saw on a post talking about this

"Any influencer who dies due to their own negligence and stupidity should automatically have their social media, websites and all online presence erased in order to prevent the spread of their stupidity and ignorance and be replaced with a landing page that simply shows an image of a Darwin Award with the date their own stupidity caused their death followed by nothing but links to educational content providers in the visitors area based on their location data. This list would not be shown to anyone using a VPN. People using a VPN should instead be shown the Darwin Award notice and a note that says "Your VPN does not hide you from your own ignorance and stupidity. Have a nice day. Or don't."
Stupid is as stupid does."

Wow, she made it to 51 being that dumb, looks like she lived a lot longer than what people with her condition are expected to live.

Some of these hoes over here are dying a slow death (throat cancer) by sucking poisonous wart filled dicks so a bitch gonna do what she is gonna do and........................

This is a crazy story, did she know those crabs were poisonous?

I think every reply in the thread misinterpreted the story except for yours and maybe H-Funk’s.

The headline leads people to assume she knowingly ate poisonous crab.

She was “plucking snails and prying brightly mottled crabs from coral crevices. In a video posted on Feb 4, she holds up one of the crabs – its shell splashed with ominous reds and browns – before dropping it into a pot of simmering coconut milk. She tastes it, smiles and continues eating.”

There’s zero indication that she knew it was poisonous. She just thought she was eating crab. If she said a word about poison or danger, they certainly would have published it.

The poor woman is being shit on and mocked all over the world as deserving her death because she did it “for the likes/views” and it just isn’t true.

I’ve never gone hunting or fishing. All of my food has basically always come from a store or a restaurant. This makes me wary of ever trying because I might pluck the wrong fish or crab or shoot the wrong deer or giraffe.

RIP
