Stephen A. Smith reported on First Take this morning that the Philadelphia 76ers turned down a trade for Jimmy Butler that involved the #3 pick in the NBA Draft. Instead, the Sixers moved up to #1 and will likely take Markelle Fultz. Now it seems like a done deal that the Boston Celtics will be able to turn that same #3 pick into Bulter.

The decision by the Sixers is kind of surprising when you first hear it, but it makes sense in the long run. The Process is a long one and even if the Sixers are able to build a playoff team right now, they don’t have a shot at a title as long as the Warriors and LeBrons are intact. Still, even if Fultz is the right percentage play in the long term, how long can the Sixers stand to be young, talented, exciting and losing?

Sure things don’t always work out.

Embiid is awesome when healthy. Ben Simmons seems to have limitless potential, but has never played an NBA game. The same can be said for Futlz. Meanwhile, the Sixers haven’t had a winning season since Andre Iguodala left. Assets and potential are cool, but how long until the losing culture gets ingrained in these guys? Butler could put Philly in the playoffs this season if Embiid is healthy and Simmons is as good as he’s supposed to be. What are the odds Markelle Fultz immediately transforms and entire franchise’s culture?

The Sixers chose potential over a proven quantity. In the long run, it could be the right call. Right now at least you can see both sides.

Sixers are going to draft a center.
Revisit this Thursday night.

I'm thinking the same thing too. I don't think they sold on Ball. He gonna end up in Phoenix and dad gonna be sick for a sec.

I think it depends on if they move after PG-13. Then I could see them dumping Da Snitch and maybe 1 bad contract. If they do that, you get Fox and get better on the defensive end. If they don't, select ball, move Russel to the 2 and copy golden state. Still, don't know if any of the current guys can get better on D and Fox is more athletic than anybody we have now.

They said the Cavs making move for Jimmy Butler..

I don't see how he fits on the Cavs he's another ball dominant player

Sixers did a good thing finally. No need to trade for him.

Bulls are like we're trying to just blow this shit up we don't want to win and that's crazy.
Nobody is calling out these teams that's "close" and are like fuck it

Like Toronto is a team full of bitchassness but their GM is like look we gonna TRY now our players ain't got no heart but I'm trying to put the team together to do something. offer up some fight.

Cavs wont get him; they have nothing to offer; If he gets traded, it will be to the Celts; they can offer 2 #1 picks and a player for Butler; Celts might have the #1 and #2 overall pick next years draft; im the bulls, ill take the Celts deal all day....

PG going to Lakers; they gonna have to trade for him though; give them Russell, Deng and a #1 for PG

Not of they get another team involved.

Sources: Cavs working on multi-team trade scenarios to acquire Jimmy Butler

The Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to engage the Chicago Bulls in multi-team trade scenarios that would enable the Eastern Conference champions to acquire Bulls star Jimmy Butler, according to league sources.

Sources told ESPN that the Cavaliers, in addition to their reported interest in Indiana's Paul George, are trying to assemble trade packages that would convince the Bulls to part with Butler, who is fresh off the best season of his career.

It's believed that the Cavaliers, by offering All-Star forward Kevin Love, could recruit a third team that would supply the sort of young players and/or draft picks sure to be more appealing to Chicago than the limited trade assets on Cleveland's roster.

Phoenix Suns, who have the No. 4 overall pick in Thursday night's draft as well as an available first-rate point guard in Eric Bledsoe, are a potential third-team facilitator in such a scenario.

One league source told ESPN's Dave McMenamin, meanwhile, that the Cavaliers already have been offered George in a multi-team trade scenario that would cost them Love and involve an unnamed third team.

The Boston Celtics, until Monday, had long been regarded as the primary trade suitor for Butler, given that they potentially possess seven first-round picks in the next three drafts to use to tempt the Bulls into surrendering one of the game's best two-way players. The seventh of those future picks was acquired Monday when Boston completed its trade with Philadelphia that swapped the Nos. 1 and 3 overall picks in Thursday's draft.

Butler, if he stays in Chicago, would be eligible for a so-called "super max" contract extension exceeding $200 million in the summer of 2018 should he earn an All-NBA berth next season as he did this season. But sources say that the Bulls, as expected, are getting numerous trade calls on Butler and could be moved to try to schedule 11th-hour meetings this week with top-tier draft prospects such as Duke's Jayson Tatum and Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox if talks get serious.

McMenamin reported Sunday night that when it comes to Indiana's George, Cleveland is willing to enter into trade talks without any assurances George will commit to a long-term deal. The Cavaliers are confident, McMenamin reported, that their championship culture could convince George to want to stay beyond the 2017-18 season despite George's well-chronicled desire to land with the Los Angeles Lakers as a 2018 free agent.

The contract of Cavaliers general manager David Griffin expires June 30, with no apparent progress in contract negotiations with Cavs owner Dan Gilbert.

One source told ESPN on Monday that any Cleveland trade discussion leading up to the draft have been "cursory," due to Griffin's contract situation. But the Cavs are widely expected by rivals to be very aggressive in the offseason trade market in the wake of Cleveland's 4-1 NBA Finals defeat to the Golden State Warriors and with face of franchise LeBron James entering the final year of his contract.

You know that GM LeBron is not gonna sit around and do nothing. I think that sometypa deal will happpen. Just don't know who or what teams will be involved.

Yeah defense is a big problem for the Lakers right now. I'd see if I could move Russel too.

The problem with that logic is thinking the Cavs have assets; they have only 2, which is Love and Kyrie; we know Kyrie isnt being traded, so its really only 1; now you have to ask yourself, why would the Bulls or Pacers want Love? If they are going to trade those players, then they will be in full rebuild mode; Love does nothing for any of those players; Love is only good for a team that wants to go to the next level; what teams are those? GM LBJ has saddled Cavs with non tradeable bad contract assets; nobody wants frye, TT, shump, smith, etc etc....

Shit if Boston can get Butler and Hayward and keep the pick for next year that's a fuckin win for them. Boston is in a good spot.

I agree, but stranger things have happened.

They gonna have to give up 2 picks for Butler; but they got either the Lakers pick or the Kings pick; so they can afford to give up 2 picks; plus they still have NJ pick for next year as well

Yes, but really outside of Boogie; nothing has been to strange on the trade market; Free Agent market thats a different thing; but trades are usually make a little bit more sense; just a little though:giggle:

The Cavs are reportedly exploring the trade market for Iman Shumpert and Channing Frye.

The Cavs are reportedly currently engaged with teams around the league to bring in either Paul George or Jimmy Butler, but should a trade like that go through, Kevin Love would almost assuredly need to be included. The current rumors going around the league would hint that we could see a blockbuster deal go down on draft night.

Cavs, Pacers explore deal centered on George

Paul George and the Pacers were bounced by Kevin Love and the Cavaliers in the first round of the playoffs.

JUNE 19, 2017

Sam Amico
CLEVELAND — The Indiana Pacers are looking to move star forward Paul George prior to Thursday’s NBA draft, and have been immersed in trade talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers, league sources told Amico Hoops late Sunday.

One source familiar with the talks said a deal could potentially involve multiple players from both sides.

George’s agent informed the Pacers that George will opt of his contract at the end of the 2017-18 season and become an unrestricted free agent, according to a report from The Vertical.

The Cavs, meanwhile, have been exploring the trade market for power forward Channing Frye and shooting guard Iman Shumpert, sources said. But a deal for George would likely need to involve All-Star forward Kevin Love.

According to sources, the Pacers are looking to get a substantial player and picks for George.

One source described the Cavs’ interest in George as “legit,” but added that pulling off a deal could be “very complicated.”

There is also the matter of the Boston Celtics, who seem prepared to offer some of their many first-round draft picks in a quest for George. The Celtics own the No. 1 overall pick this year — although a reported swap with the Philadelphia 76ers is expected to move the Celtics’ selection to third.

The Celtics also own multiple first-round picks in the 2018 and 2019 drafts.

George, 27, reportedly would prefer to sign with his hometown Los Angeles Lakers if he were to opt out after next season with the Pacers, The Vertical reported.

But with stars such as LeBron James and Kyrie Irving already on the roster, the Cavs may be willing to trade for George with no assurances — banking on the idea that joining a ready-made contender would be enough to convince him to stay.

Like George, James is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of next season.

As an aside, Cavs general manager David Griffin’s contract expires at the end of June. So while the Cavs attempt to conduct talks centered on George, owner Dan Gilbert and Griffin are trying to hammer out a new deal.

“It’s going to be a hairy few days,” one source predicted.

In the meantime, Griffin is approaching the job as business as usual, handling talks and other offseason activity in the same manner as always.

George averaged 23.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists this past season. The Pacers finished with the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference before getting swept by James and the Cavs in the first round of the playoffs.

Last week, George told reporters in Indianapolis, “I’m under contract as a Pacer. That’s all that needs to really be known. I’m here. I’m a Pacer. Again, what I’ve been dealing with is stories. You guys talking or teams talking. I’m a Pacer. There’s no way around that. This is my team, my group and this is where I’m at.”

He also brushed aside any talk of potential recruitment from James.

“I don’t talk to LeBron at all,” he said. “We don’t communicate. I look up to LeBron, obviously. He’s been a tremendous ambassador to this game. He’s been a very huge influence for me outside of the game, but we don’t communicate and figure out where one another’s going.”

Pacers GM and director of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard is in his first offseason as the team’s main basketball decision-maker, having replaced Larry Bird.
