First of all it's you're missing.
secondly not paying musicians is not the reason why hiphop producers sample, they sample because that's how you create hiphop music, or the main way you create hiphop music. There are other ways, and using musicians, eg a keyboardist and a bass player, are one of those other ways, and this doesn't have to be an expensive method considering you
only have to pay the musician a one off fee for the session.
Musicians are everywhere, most are out of work, you don't have to hire prince. A lot of producers are themselves musicians and can play certain instruments or at least just the keys, themselves, they just choose to sample for the feel, or they use a mixture of both sampling and playing.
I understand these cats didn't expect this track to blow up, and had no foresight as what to do if it does. However I've seen producers/acts/managers who are more plugged into the business, who created alternate versions, incase of what may happen. Being prepared costs nothing, it makes no sense to even be in the music biz if you cannot even perceive success, and how to fully capitalise on it should it happen for you.

That sample could have gotten cleared for much less than 100K and 100% publishing.
Steely Dan did them like that because Tariq and Peter FUCKED UP...
Imagine if you made a song or wrote a blog... or made a video and someone take your work WITHOUT your permission and has parlayed that into a success for them AND NOT YOU. Niggas having a bidding war over your intellectual property and shit... You'd probably HIT THE ROOF.
Peter and Tariq DID not follow procedure and paid the price for it.... and here's the thing... THEY KNEW BETTER... Lord Tariq knew about sample clearance... and said FUCK IT... and that's why I say Peter is fronting... Those dudes made a choice to circumvent proper procedure... AND even though they didn't get any publishing, they damn sure made a SHIT LOAD OF SHOW MONEY...
listen to his story...they made a song using the sample for some local club shit..put it this way if that song was never a national hit and was just some shit that was played locally in new york clubs gunz and tariq would have been local heroes for half a summer in that region which is exactly what they were going for. And steely dan wouldn't have given a shit. At best they would have most liekly issued a cease and desist order if they found out it did that much.
but youre right in that it would have been smarter to get the clearance in any case but how much does that cost generally?
Here's something that most don't know: Becker/Fagen were WELL aware of this song. They were just waiting to see where it went. Once it became a hit, they let it climb to where it was impossible to pull, and then they called. Once it reached a certain point, clearance was out of the equation. It was all about publishing at that point.

The clubs and radio got it because Gunnz and Tariq 'white-labeled' it... passed it off to every DJ they knew... AND... those same 'white-label' Deja-vu singles were also being SOLD as well... How do I know??? Simple... I bought at least 8 of them... NOW... Who was selling them???
Now... the way Pete makes it sound, it was as if someone got a cassette of Deja-Vu and they played it on the radio and it blew up automatically... which is NOT true...
Those dudes WORKED that record... They put it in the right hands... made sure many DJs got it... and it blew up because it was a DOPE record... Let's NOT forget... Lord Tariq had record deals before so he knows what needs to be done... He just chose to say fuck it.
As far as clearance goes... I mean, I've heard some ask for $1,500 to $15,000... For instance... I know Pete Rock once paid, $16,000 for a Brother Jack McDuff sample...'Electric Surfboard'... I've also heard RZA ask Syl Johnson for permission to use some of his stuff and basically said I can't pay you out of pocket BUT I'll give you BIG piece of the publishing and Syl Johnson ended up making millions with the Wu-Tang.
The difference is... RZA and Pete Rock negotiated with the artists first... Whereas, Gunnz and Tariq ignored Steely Dan... Not to mention, Steely Dan had already got at De La Soul for the SAME THING( the song 'PEG').
Dont get me wrong... Gunnz and Tariq got RAPED by Steely Dan... BUT... They kind of did it to themselves...

Here's the thing: IIRC, Peter Gunz and them had to give SD 160K, all of their pub advance. Had they cleared the song for about 20K, they could've kept about 140K. Hindsight is 20/20, but the idea of clearance was brought up to them NUMEROUS times before this song was released, and they had no fucks to give.

this business doesn't work like that...how is he fronting if he told the truth?? they put the song out not expecting it do what it did..they just put out for the local heads...I don't know what it cost to clear a song but if you put out something with no intention of selling it then its free. I think Steely Dan was kinda shitty to demand 100% of the publishing including the rap lyrics tho
