How do you feel about nonblack people using it?

what's making me curious is how I resent hearing it from these little Asian and Mexican teenagers and grown men... almost as much as I hate hearing it from black folks. When they use it, does it have the same meaning? Just curious...

Funny you bring this up considering our PM convo about the subject.

I recently heard a mexican say it. He's a manager at this mexican restautant I like. I was sitting at the bar, done eating, just finishing my drinks and talking to the bartender(she's cool) and I hear him say it in reference to something a white guy sitting behind me did.

I looked, then convinced myself he didn't just say that.
Then he said it again! I didn't/don't like it, but hey, I say nigga all that time. Even referring to myself as a nigga.

I think I don't like it because it's kind of a possessive thing. We have this word now that was once used against us, now we use it and take the power from it... then others want to come take our word and imitate us?

Give us back ....us!

When I do hear black people use this word, I just look and shake my head. I'm not sure they even know the reasons why they use this word in the first place. I also detect some sort of hypocrisy on this subject. There will be some black people who use this word amongst their own people and yet when a non black uses it, they wanna claim the 'racist' view. You can't have it both ways.

I guess that I could only speak from a UK perspective.

The 'N' word is definately frowned upon using, especially by a non black. From experience a non black using that word against a black person normally ends with a swollen lip.

If it's used in the right context I'm cool with it.

For example, I used to fuck with this rican chick. *hell she is mostly black anyway...* When she uses it like "damn nigga you got some good dick", or "nigga you bet not give away my dick" then its cool. However, I used to also fuck with this redneck chick. When we broke up, she had the nerve to call me the version with the "er". So I did what any other logical black man would do. Be patient. I waited until she wanted to "make up", fuck the shit out of her, then before I nut choke her and let her know that if she ever call me that again I would fuck her ass up. After that, she was the sweetest white chick in North Texas.

interesting I hate the word in all forms and from any mouth. It makes my skin crawl... "Brother", "brotha", "man", "woman", "sista", "dude" can all replace it... but coming from a nonblack person's mouth just shows how disrespectful the word is when used toward any body. and sadly it's used a lot in rap music and I think that's where a lot of younger people are getting it from, thinking it's cool, because rap is so ubiquitous now.

But like MCP said: I don't think we can have it both ways. Either we get rid of the word or we can't get mad when other cultures use it (in a bad or neutral way towards us)

Your right its a vile disgusting word which for many of us will always remain the way. It was never intended to be a way to greet another man or woman. Anyone thinking they can embrace this word and turn it into a term of endearment is either grossly mistaken or delusional.

The problem today is most blacks (especially youth) have no connection with those who battled for equal rights. I'm talking about those who fought to be more than just ni99ers. The ones who laid the groundwork that all today take for granted. They have never faced the National Guard, attack dogs, KKK, police using gestapo police tactics, racist white mobs or segregation. Never stood toe to toe against police in riot gear. Never faced high powered water hoses. Maybe if they had they would understand why there's no room for that type word in a progressive environment.

The one thing that remains a constant with me is I never have and never will call a brother or sista a ******.

Growing up, I thought the world "******" was something used for trifling people of ANY color. It wasn't until, about fourth or fifth grade, a classmate pointed out to me the vileness of the word

I can't lie; I know I've said it when I see a person of any color doing so irrefutable, stupid shit...lol...sometimes, I just really can't help it!

However, I never use the word around a group of non-black persons or in a large group, anyway... I don't like anyone, white or black, using it, but it's so ingrained in some people's head, through music, movies, etc., that it's a hard habit to break...

Remember a few years/months ago when they had the mock funeral for the word?!? I think it was a horrible attempt at trying to bury the usage of it. Maybe if we started educating more youth about the impact the word can still have, and the impact it once had (I'm not talking about teenagers...I'm talked about K-5), we can start to funnel a change in thinking possibly...

One of the main reasons I stopped using the word a few years back is cuz I got tired of hearing non black folks who think they are "down" say it ... shit is ignorant as hell ... She may not be a black American but she truly understands. Her understanding is better than most native born black Americans.
