PC Builders.... advice?

I'm trying to be patient for the damn new AMD chips to come back in stock. I can get a 3900 or 3950x but I really want the 5900 so I'll at least be up to date and last for another 3-5 years like my current 4790K has done for me

Results are in. My new build (i9, 32 gigs of Ram, m.2 ssd) is 3 times faster than my 2015 build (amd fx 8350, 24 gigs of Ram, 1TB rpm drive).

What I can do in 5 minutes on my new build takes 15 minutes on my old one.
based off your specs..the biggest difference is your choice og going sssd via rpm drive. That was the game changer Other than that your specs are very close.

Yeah, I agree about the ssd versus rpm drive. But you don’t think that i9 is a huge difference over that amd?

Man, I finally put that i9 to a test. Amazing speed. What took my last build (AMD FX) 6 hours to complete, took 1 minute to do with this i9.

I’m doing parallel processing.

I’m on the planning phase on building another server to process my weather data.

The last build I made in the thread has now become my dominate work computer. So I’m keeping it 100% safe from all other fuckery I like to do.

This new build will serve as my main meteorological server as I am amping up my priority to the weather community as a consultant.

That means process is going to be a huge deal. The processor is going to have to handle many tasks and in a short time frame. This new build will also have to last at least 10 years.

I think at minimum I will be spending over $2k. Video cards is not a huge deal to me, so I can splurge on the backend for a processor, RAM, and storage capabilities. Cooling will not be a huge issue either.

I don't see you spending more than $1500
i7 12th generation processor
32gb RAM
nVidia 3070 card, which I don't think you need. Could get a 3060 or less
2TB SSD or even a 4TB NVM
Motherboard, case...

Not spending that much over 2k.
Dont look at spending more means you get more for your buck. Many processors or even memory can't justify price to dollars. Like it makes no sense spending $500 for a 6% increase of speed or something of something that performs at the same level depending on what software you're using.

I spent a little over 1200 on my last build with about an extra $200 in some upgrades after the build.

I don’t need a high video card at all. I’m working in a terminal 97% of the time.

I just need high end cpu processing and ram. I currently have an i9 and 64 gigs of ram with a 1 TB ssd. The i9 has 10 cores. Because I will be doing a lot of task simultaneously all the time, then the number of cores becomes important.

The server I will be replacing is an AMD FX with 8 cores. It’s doing well now, but I am somewhat limited in the number of task I can perform. The motherboard max at 32 gigs of ram and I need more than that for sure. The satellite data processing can easily eat that away if I decide to process the images at full resolution.
