SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Paula Deen has found a key ingredient to bringing some sizzle back to her career - a cash infusion worth at least $75 million from a private investment firm.

The Savannah-based celebrity cook announced Wednesday that she's launched an umbrella company that will oversee her restaurants, cookbooks, product endorsements and other remaining slices of her media empire. The new company, called Paula Deen Ventures, said private-equity firm Najafi Companies is investing $75 million to $100 million to help Deen make a comeback.

Deen's fortunes took a dive last year after comments she made under oath during proceedings in a lawsuit, namely that she had used racial slurs in the past, became public. The Food Network dropped Deen, as did pork producer Smithfield Foods, book publisher Ballantine and several other companies that paid her to endorse their products.

In a statement, Deen praised the partnership with Phoenix-based Najafi and the decision to name Steven Nanula, who has already worked with Deen for the past two years, to serve as CEO of Paula Deen Ventures.

"I know this is the right decision to lead my team, as we continue to share quality products with my fans - whose love and support have built my brands," Deen said.

Jahm Najafi, CEO of the Najafi Companies, said his firm has great respect for Deen's past success and is confident its investment will pay off. Others brands to benefit from Najafi's investments include the Phoenix Suns pro basketball team, the Book of the Month Club and SkyMall, the direct marketing business aimed at travelers.

"We know that the enterprise will be successful and valuable, as Paula and her team continue to bring quality products and experiences to her loyal fan base," Najafi said in a statement.

A publicist for Deen told The Associated Press she was not available for an interview.

Deen's image took a crushing blow last summer when a transcript of a legal deposition Deen gave to attorneys in a discrimination lawsuit filed by a former employee was made public. Deen was asked under oath if she had ever used the N-word. "Yes, of course," Deen replied, though she added: "It's been a very long time."

The lawsuit was settled out of court in August. Terms were never disclosed.

they still wont let her back on Food Network..or Cooking Channel for that matter

This is how it usually works. They just have to ride out the storm. Memories are short. Did she even wait a year? How long has it been?

But almost all the white folks or celebs who got into some racial hot water usually bounce back fairly strong within about a year or two.

On second thought I haven't heard too much from Mel Gibson. Dude has been pretty quiet the last few years since his wild outbursts.

He talked shit about Jews.
Stallone would have met tha same fate if it was jews he was talking bad about.

no surprise. she ain't the first or the last.
when you're white in amerikka you can do no wrong

Meanwhile Michael Vick still can't walk around in public without getting shit for killing dogs. Being an animal lover, I hate what he did. However, he did his time and has done nothing but try to redeem himself. Unfortunately, he will never get a pass like
this bitch.

I actually do not think Paula should have lost everything, her ability to come back from it all and make a ton of money really helps solidify where black people are on the totem pole (like it wasn't already obvious that we are considered the lowest of the low; never good enough, not worthy of second chances, and unredeemable).

Paula Deen says she is like 'that black football player' who came out of the closet

The celebrity chef says she empathizes with NFL prospect Michael Sam who recently came out publicly as gay. Just as he wants to be known as a football player, not a gay football player, she just wants to be known as a chef, not a disgraced chef.

If Paula Deen expects to cook up a comeback she might want to start mincing words.

The disgraced celebrity chef compared her struggle to repair her tarnished reputation, after admitting she used the n-word, to NFL prospect Michael Sam's fight to be seen simply as a football player — not the token gay football player.

"I feel like 'embattled' or 'disgraced' will always follow my name. It's like that black football player who recently came out," Deen, 67, told People magazine. "He said, 'I just want to be known as a football player. I don't want to be known as a gay football player.' I know exactly what he's saying."

Sam, 24, is expected to be the first openly gay player in NFL history. He dazzled college football fans with his gridiron greatness as defensive end for the Missouri Tigers and hopes the roar of the crowds will stay focused on his game, rather than his sexuality.

"I just wish you guys would see me as Michael Sam the football player instead of Michael Sam the gay football player," Sam told reporters Feb. 22.

One day later basketball player Jason Collins signed a 10-day contract with the Brooklyn Nets becoming the first openly gay man in any major professional sports league in North America. Subsequently, his No. 98 jersey became a bestseller on NBA.com.

Deen has stirred up a bit of bewilderment by comparing her confession of using a racial epithet a "very long time" ago to young African-American men coming out of the closet, USA Today reported.

The Queen of Butter's highly lucrative cooking empire and personal reputation were seriously — perhaps irrevocably — damaged by the controversy. And it took a toll on her mental health.

Deen says that weathering the scandal involved facing her "greatest fear."

how does macklemore winning a music award over kendrick lamaar equate to a reported racist that got sued in court? one dude got an award in hip hop music category from voters who obviously don't even listen to or understand hip hop music. the broad was (imo anyway) an old school bigot that just didn't understand why everybody was up in arms over her use of the 'n-word' :smh:

Is anyone surprised really?

Name one white person that hasn't recovered from such a scandal besides that dude from Seinfeld.

Paula Deen compares her struggles to openly gay NFL prospect Michael Sam

Paula Deen’s $100 million empire crumbled last year after she admitted to using a racial slur in her everyday life, and as she continues campaigning to repair her public image with a $75 million investment deal on her side, the celebrity chef has compared her struggles to those of the NFL’s first openly gay prospect, Michael Sam.

“I feel like ‘embattled’ or ‘disgraced’ will always follow my name. It’s like that black football player who recently came out,” Deen said in a People Magazine cover story, which hits newsstands on Friday. “He said, ‘I just want to be known as a football player. I don’t want to be known as a gay football player.’ I know exactly what he’s saying.”

In other words, Deen does not like being labeled a racist for a slur she swore she used a “very long time ago.”

“I’m fighting to get my name back,” the former Food Network personality said.

On top of a $75-$100 million offer from private equity firm Najafi Cos. for her new company, Paula Deen Ventures, a company representative said earlier this month that it is currently speaking with several “TV networks, retail chains and other possible partners.” Food Network is not one of them.

Deen also said the public downfall she experienced last summer left her unable to get out of bed in the morning, because it felt like her “world was crashing down again” every passing day.

And since television personalities Phil Robertson (“Duck Dynasty”) and Nigella Lawson (“The Taste”) endured scandals last year without any noticeable damage to their careers, Deen has developed newfound “empathy” for those scrutinized by the media.

“It’s amazing that some people are given passes and some people are crucified,” Deen said. ”I have new empathy for these situations, though. My dad always told me, ‘Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear.’”

Paula Deen returns to ‘Today,' apologizes year after racism scandal: ‘I disappointed myself’

The TV chef said she couldn’t watch her interview on ‘Today’ from last summer, admitting she should have been ‘under the care of a doctor’ in such a distressed state.

Paula Deen and her sons return to ‘Today’ on Tuesday, a day before the kitchen maven’s comeback with the Paula Deen online network.
"I know how I treat people, I know my love for people, and I'm not going to sit here and tell everything I've done to people of color," she said at the time.

Deen explained she used the "N-word" only once, when she was supposedly attacked and had a gun held to her head.

Reflecting on the interview Tuesday, the TV chef said she should have been "at home, maybe even under the care of a doctor," and not giving an interview days after losing her cooking empire.

Deen said she has since learned the ‘power of words,’ and apologized for hurting people.

Deen said she has since learned the ‘power of words,’ and apologized for hurting people.
Deen said she now understands why several sponsors dropped her.

"I had to remove myself and sit quietly so that I could think and see things from all angles," she told Lauer, 56.

Now apparently vindicated, as the lawsuit against her had been thrown out, Deen added that she's upset the incriminating deposition remained in the spotlight despite the woman's credibility being questioned.

Deen sat down with Matt Lauer in June last year, giving a tearful interview in the wake of losing her cooking empire after being accused of racism.
Deen said she has learned so much over the past year — enough to fill another book, in addition to the documentary she is currently working on.

"I feel like everybody needs to know the whole entire story," Deen said. "I've learned about the power of words. … My words hurt people. They disappointed people. And frankly, I disappointed myself. And for that I am so sorry - I am so sorry for the hurt I caused people. People lost their jobs… it went deep into corporate America."

Her new online Paula Deen Network launches Wednesday. It was also reported Monday that Deen has purchased several hundred hours of footage from her tenure on Food Network to use for her new channel.

cacs can always make a comeback. There are always enough sympathizers sick of "the pc society" to rally up the troops and support. She is a evil racist pig, and she only had to sit in time out for a few months. I cant think of a single racist cac that didn't come back. I saw Kramer on tv, Mel Gibson still acting, John Rocker is on Survivor, Riley Cooper got a new contract, Paula back, Donald Sterling got a billy........shit on black people, make a faux apology, pay some money to some "activist" and then wait for cacs to rally in your honor

Paula Deen Dragged For 'Insensitive' Comments After Food Network Star Dies

posted by Dave Basner - Just Now

The cooking world is grieving for one of its own today. Chef Carl Ruiz, owner of the New York restaurant La Cubana who made a name for himself on the Food Network series Guy's Grocery Games, passed away suddenly at the age of 44. A cause of death has not yet been released but the news was confirmed on his restaurant's Instagram page. Among what the post said was "Beyond his immense culinary talent, Carl's larger-than-life personality never failed to entertain, enlighten, and uplift every person he encountered along his #Ruizing adventures."

Ruiz's celebrity chef friends added their tributes, with Guy Fieri saying, "I have no words to describe what a great friend he was to me and my family. His ability to make me laugh and smile under any circumstances was only outshined by his talent as a chef. Over the years, I’ve met a lot of great people but a friend like Carl is one in a hundred million. Carl 'The Cuban’ Ruiz will forever live on in my heart and in those of all who loved him."

Meanwhile, Jet Tila wrote, "You taught us how to enjoy every moment to the fullest and not live wondering what if! You are gone way too soon @carlruiz! I will always be #ruizing! You will be remembered by us all! #RIP my friend. Thank you @guyfieri for bringing Carl into all of our lives."

However, when asked for a comment on Ruiz's passing, Paula Deenresponded in a way that has ruffled some feathers. While appearing on The Big Jay Show, Deen, who made headlines in 2013 for admitting to using the N-word, explained, "I'm not familiar with him but I'm so sorry to hear that. You know, they say the restaurant business will kill you. No pun intended."

Deen laughed at what she said, but commenters definitely did not find it funny. One person stated, "Is it just me or does #PaulaDeen prove YET AGAIN what a HORRIBLE PERSON SHE REALLY IS. Making fun of a deceased person is so LOW. Glad @FoodNetwork took out the TRASH years ago. Her family must be embarrassed. The late #CarlRuiz deserves better and so do his family and fans."

Another wrote, "How sad to see Paula Deen once again speak without thinking about Chef Carl Ruiz's untimely death. Apparently, she didn't learn her lesson after losing her empire after racial slurs several years ago. Is it insensitivity or just plain ignorance? I'm thinking of the latter."

One wrote, "Your insensitive comments about chef Carl Ruiz are so embarrassing," another person said. "Haven't you learned anything at your old age? Your ignorant and not funny.. " and a different commenter said, "When will you learn to shut your mouth?" someone asked. "Or else show some decency. Chef Carl Ruiz was truly loved by many and your tasteless (pun intended) comment shows a lack of class and heart."

Deen's defenders call it a harmless joke, but many disagree. As yet, Paula has not responded to the comments.
