I wasn't even a teen yet at that time, but I know it can't be as you said because Starks left as part of the Latrell Sprewell trade in 1998. This was after the Pacers beat the Knicks in the second round.
I was actually really pissed the year they ended up going to the Finals because they had traded both Starks and Charles Oakley (straight up for Marcus Camby, who played for Toronto), which actually turned out to be two of the last good deals they made.
