Armie Hammer slammed for Stan Lee tweet criticizing celebrities’ tributes

By Katherine Lam | Fox News

Armie Hammer received backlash after he criticized celebrities for their tributes to Stan Lee, who died Monday.

Hammer took to Twitter hours after Lee’s death Monday to voice his frustration on stars who were remembering the legendary Marvel superheroes creator by posting a photo of themselves with 95-year-old. Those celebrity tributes included ones by Hugh Jackman, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Pratt and Kat Dennings.

"So touched by all of the celebrities posting pictures of themselves with Stan Lee... no better way to commemorate an absolute legend than putting up a picture of yourself," Hammer tweeted Monday after Lee’s death was announced.

A reporter then tweeted at the “Call Me By Your Name” actor: “They... worked with him...?” to which Hammer responded, “Me.... too...?”

Hammer had worked with Lee in 2014 when he voiced the character Strong Arm in “Stan Lee’s Mighty 7.”

Twitter users slammed Hammer for criticizing how others grieved a person’s death. Many people said the photos may have captured a good memory they had with Lee that they wanted to share publicly.

The actor, however, defended his stance.

“Maybe they’re just remembering how it felt to meet him with those photos. That’s how I would feel. I never got the chance,” a woman wrote back to Hammer on Twitter.

“If Stan impacted your life (ie. All of our lives) with his work, post his work that touched you the most. Posting a selfie makes his death about you and how cool you felt taking a picture with him,” he replied back.

When a fan asked how people should commemorate a person when they die, Hammer said a selfie is not the correct response.

“If your answer is ‘post a selfie’ then I think we need a cultural revamp across the board,” the actor tweeted.

STAN LEE’S FINAL SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS HONORS VETERANS DAY WHILE HIGHLIGHTING HIS WWII SERVICE

Hammer did approve of Mark Ruffalo’s tribute to Lee. Ruffalo, who play the superhero the Hulk, tweeted a photo of the comic book mastermind standing in front of a Hulk figure.

“Sad, sad day. Rest In Power, Uncle Stan. You have made the world a better place through the power of modern mythology and your love of this messy business of being human...,” the actor captioned the photo.

Hammer said the post was an “example that stood out and made me think his [Ruffalo’s] post was actually about Stan.”

Lee was taken to Ceders-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and pronounced dead, an attorney for Lee's daughter, J.C. Lee, said. Lee had experienced several health issues throughout the past year including a battle with pneumonia as well as issues with his vision.

"We at Stan Lee’s Lee POW! Entertainment are saddened by the loss of our friend and mentor Stan Lee, the father of pop culture. His passing today marks a devastating and painful moment in time, but the legacy of Stan Lee, through his creative genius and his universes of characters, will continue to reach the world of true believers for generations to come,” Shane Duffy, CEO of Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment, said in a statement to Fox News.

social media has sure changed many things

this is the selfie generation - the attention and affirmation seeking is now normal culture
- so now many in this era could never understand the basis of what Hammer is saying

You know what would be even weirder?

celebrities posting pics of Stan by himself

TF is up wit this dude....
yeah - I guess in this day n age - memorial would be weird

It's just celebrity hate.
if they knew the guy and had pictures with the guy and wanted to share those pictures then what's the problem? it's not attention whoring.
attention whoring is being contrary for the sake of being contrary and inserting yourself into the process of grieving of another person's life.

so touching of hammer to tweet the proper etiquette according to HIM on how to properly grieve someone else's life

he’s probably mad he doesn’t have a pic w/ stan lee and this is the only way to remind ppl they worked together lol

i am all for tributes and letting ppl mourn/celebrate however they feel

but if I knew stan personally i wouldnt wish a RIP by posting a pic of us together but to each his own

Y'all more mad at Bill Maher and Army Hammer than the cop shot shot the security guard :smh:

Nah fam, I'm not.. I'm definitely more pissed at the cop and injustice system that has protected his identity. For the time being though, i can be mad at these shit heads i can identify

Armie Hammer exits Shotgun Wedding amid social media controversy

Armie Hammer has bowed out of the action-comedy Shotgun Wedding shortly before filming was scheduled to begin, after becoming embroiled in a social media controversy over the weekend.

The actor was set to star opposite Jennifer Lopez in the Lionsgate movie, but allegations surfaced over the weekend that he had sent disturbing messages to various women on Instagram who said they had been in sexual relationships with him. The messages purported to have been sent by Hammer have not been verified, and he has called the allegations "bulls---."

A spokesperson for the production told EW, "Given the imminent start date of Shotgun Wedding, Armie has requested to step away from the film and we support him in his decision."

Hammer said in a statement, "I'm not responding to these bulls--- claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic. Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I'm grateful to them for that."

Directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Shotgun Wedding follows a couple as they gather their families for a destination wedding, only to have the whole wedding party taken hostage.

EW has learned that Hammer's role will be recast, with production still expected to begin in the Dominican Republic in the weeks ahead.

Armie Hammer Bows Out of Making-Of Godfather Miniseries, The Offer, at Paramount+
By Chris Murphy@christress

Armie Hammer has left another project. Variety reports that the Rebecca actor who has been embroiled in social media scandal has exited The Offer, the forthcoming miniseries about the making of the Godfather from Paramount+. Hammer was set to lead the series as producer Al Ruddy, who produced The Godfather in 1972. Hammer’s star has continuously fallen since allegations of sexual assault, and, yes, cannibalism have plagued the actor after unverified direct messages he sent to various women began surfacing on social media earlier this year. Hammer has denied all claims lodged against him as “spurious online attacks,” but has since dropped out of the film Shotgun Wedding starring Jennifer Lopez, and has issued a public apology after referring to a faceless woman in lingerie “Miss Cayman” in a video on his secret Instagram account, @el_destructo_86. We look forward to seeing which non-cannibal actor will replace Hammer in the series. We hear Josh Duhamel is available.
