Parenting from a distance. How did you maintain contact if they were not within driving distance?

My boy's ex just moved their kid from DC to Chicago, after she got a new job. He's crushed, but plans to keep in touch. Fucked up part is he saw his kid on a daily basis and she just bounced with no notice (called him when she got there).

He plans to take her to court, but is concerned about how much contact he will have given the distance. Anyone been through something similar?

That’s fucked up!

I wonder what made her get away so quick without telling him anything?

Well thankfully it's 2019

Buy his kid an iPad or tablet or PC
Video chat with the kid during the times he'd normally set aside to see him/her

Do homework together etc

That's how you stay in contact until you can get custody resolved

This ^^^

It may not be the perfect situation but it will be the best for now. At least the kid will know his father cares and is making the best effort to keep in contact. That's very important.

Hopefully the mom will allow that, but the fact that she bounced without telling him says otherwise.

Kids are smart
if the kid is used to seeing the dad every day
and now the kid don't see him at all
the kid is going to ask why
and anything that sounds like "well your dad doesn't" is gonna sound like bullshit to the kid.
