Amazon's Paper Girls Looks Like The Comic Book Adaptation You Didn't Know You Needed

In the last few years, Amazon Prime Video has proved that it's the place to go for live-action comic book adaptations that are a little different from the usual capes and tights projects audiences are used to. The service has delivered a steady stream of unique shows based on classic comics like "The Tick," "The Boys," and "Invincible." However, there's another acclaimed Image Comics title that's getting the TV treatment: "Paper Girls." Yes, the time-traveling story from "Saga" creator Brian K. Vaughan and artist Cliff Chiang is coming to Amazon Prime.
The comic follows a group of girls in the fictional town of Stony Stream who are out delivering papers in the early hours after Halloween in 1988 when a futuristic war crashes into their lives. The gang is thrown headfirst into a time-traveling adventure and they must grapple with the idea of knowing what their futures look like. Much like "Stranger Things," the series is a love letter to 1980s pop culture that puts a diverse cast of characters under the microscope, making now the perfect time for "Paper Girls" to get its own live-action series.
Since the comics are so visually iconic -- thanks to Chiang's art style, colorist Matt Wilson, and designer Jared K. Fletcher -- it's easy to see why comic readers might be hesitant about the idea of a TV series. Thankfully, Amazon has released a first look at the "Paper Girls" show, and the series shows plenty of potential.

The First Look At Paper Girls Is Faithfully Vibrant

Entertainment Weekly revealed the first look at Amazon's Paper Girls in interviews with creator Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang, and it looks vibrantly faithful to the original comics. The first images reveal the titular girls themselves, with Sofia Rosinsky as Mac Coyle, Fina Strazza as K.J. Brandman, Riley Lai Nelet as Erin Tieng, and Camryn Jones as Tiffany Quilkin. Comedian Ali Wong also stars as the older version of Erin, a dynamic that will be interesting to see play out on-screen.

Chiang opened up about the time travel element of the story, saying, "I don't know if anybody's turned out the way they thought they would 10 years ago. So for these girls who are just on the cusp of becoming teenagers and then adults, to see where your life ends up is a really cool thing." Meanwhile, Vaughn explained how accessible the series is for audiences who haven't read the original comics. "This show really takes such advantage of the medium. If you've never heard of 'Paper Girls,' if you're not familiar with this comic, then the show is still 100 percent accessible and I think you will love it."

However, it sounds like comic readers are also in for a surprise because Vaughn notes that the show goes in some different directions from the source material. "With our blessing, they go to some places that we never could as a comic and there are new characters, there are new threats."

Thankfully, there isn't long to wait, as "Paper Girls" starts streaming on July 29, 2022.

I got the series but I never read it. I heard it's top level comic. Maybe I'll watch the show, then be the cunt that reads the original material and complains about how much was changed. That Sweet Tooth Netflix show really fucked up the story by making it somewhat kid friendly. I bought the full series thinking I could read it with my 13 year old, and holy fuck balls...It is not for young adults.

The delivery route has come to an end.
The acclaimed series Paper Girls has been canceled by Amazon Prime Video after one season.
The sci-fi show, based on the comic series of the same name, has not been renewed for a second season by the streamer. The news comes after the first eight episodes of the fan-favorite aired in July to praise from both critics and audiences.
Set in the '80s, Paper Girls follows four paper delivery girls who find themselves at the center of a war between time travelers. On a mission through time, the group must work to save the world. Featuring budding talent Sofia Rosinksy, Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, and Fina Strazza, the small screen venture also features comedian Ali Wong.

Comic co-creators Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang spoke to EW in June about their inspiration for the series, which debuted in 2015 and expanded into 30 issues.

"Growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland, there was one year when I was around 12, where all of the paper boys in our neighborhood were suddenly replaced by paper girls," Vaughan said. "I just thought it was so badass that these 12-year-old children were going out at 4 a.m. to deliver bad news to adults. It was just so interesting and captivating that they were newspaper delivery kids, sort of a dying breed, and yet they were the first of their kind. I thought, 'this is such an interesting group of young women. They would make a great heart of a story.' So it started with that inspiration and expanded from there."

I am guessing they never planned to renew it since they released all episodes at once. I don’t think that have done that for any other series, at least not in a while.

I thought it was pretty good. I wonder what was the reason for the cancellation.

Low viewership? I have the comics, and after seeing how streaming services have to tone down and alter comics to make them more marketable, I decided not to watch it.

You raise a valid point. Invincible was adapted from a comic and even that was serialized. Upload which is scify and cgi heavy, was the same way.

Something as ambitious as this, dropped all at once.....?

I could see maybe dropping the first 2 maybe 3 episodes at once and then seeing who comes back for the rest.

Joint looks decent. They should have given the show time. If amazon just wants out the door hits they will be canceling alot of shows. Usually takes syfy shows two or three seasons to build up an audience.

Some get released all at once some don't. For whatever reason, the boys was the first to go the weekly route, that I am aware of. Bosch on the other hand got full release every season it was on Prime. jack reacher and the series withChris Pine were all day one releases well.

Not sure how they make that determination.Covid may have had something to do with it.

Stranger Things entire success was built around day 1full release, so obviously not a bad thing.

I think the bigger problem is the amount of money they are spending on LoRd of The Rings. Alot of ok to low ratings stuff may get the quick hook because of LOTR.

That's a good point about budgetary constraints. Even with big money backing them.

the boys whole season 1 was released at once. i think certain shows that they figure got potential now they will make it weekly. it has a longer life span on social media oppose to the whole season dropping at once. they made sure rings of power dropped at the sametime globally. on th east coast it was 9pm.

I really enjoyed the 1st season, now I have to read the comic book to find out how it ends.
