Papa John's, NFL make 'mutual decision' to end sponsorship deal

CEO Steve Ritchie said on the company's earnings conference call that the league and the company mutually decided it was in their best interests for Papa John's, which became the official pizza of the league in 2010, to give up the designation.

The brand is the first NFL sponsor to leave in the midst of its deal. The company said on the call that there was no additional cost for undoing the deal.

"The NFL and Papa John's have made a mutual decision to shift from their official league sponsorship to a focus on partnerships with 22 local NFL teams, presence in broadcast and digital media, and key personalities in the sport," the league and company said in a joint statement.

The company will continue to invest in the NFL through its local-market deals with 22 teams. The company will no longer have presence at the league's big events, including the draft and the Super Bowl, which will be given to the new pizza sponsor. The league is expected to have a replacement before the 2018 season begins.

It was nearly four months ago that Papa John's founder John Schnatter, then also the CEO, said players who staged protests during the national anthem hurt business. The company pulled the NFL shield off its commercials during game broadcasts and took the shield off its pizza boxes.

"We are disappointed the NFL and its leadership did not resolve this," Schnatter said at the time.

Twelve days later, after the company's stock had dropped 12 percent, Schnatter apologized for his comments.

Schnatter, who was the face of the brand, was later replaced as CEO on Jan. 1. The company's chief financial officer, Lance Tucker, will leave after this week to become CFO at Jack in the Box.

Sales for Papa John's were down 3.9 percent across the country from October through December versus the same time period a year before, the company announced Tuesday, due to promotions that didn't pan out and negative consumer perception. The company had positive comparative sales for the 14th consecutive year, narrowly accomplishing the mark in 2017 by growing 0.1 percent.

Shares were down 7 percent in after-hours trading as of 5:09 p.m. ET.

I said this was coming when "papa" jon opened his mouth and bit the hand that fed him. And dont be fooled by the "mutual decision" bullshit. The NFL told Jon to take his shit pizza and kick rocks. Horrible business decision on his part. And his shareholders and franchisee's will have to pay for it.

This is also part of the Jerry Jones fallout. He let Jerrah put a battery in his back to talk tough and now the NFL making them both eat shit.. Owners and NFL suing Jerrah and kicked John out the club. Message to all future potential offenders... Dont fuck with the NFL bread.

They fucked themselves:lol:. They should have stayed neutral but nooooooooooooo, they had to take an anti-progressive political stance on the kneeling issue.

But apparently they STILL have local NFL team deals

I wonder WHICH teams are STILL in partnership with Papa John?

And will any LOCAL fan bases have an issue?

Less than 14 hours after Papa John's announced it had prematurely ended its sponsorship as the official pizza of the NFL, the league announced its replacement: Pizza Hut.

Financial terms of the deal were not revealed, but sources say it extends beyond the original Papa John's deal, which was contracted to run through the 2020 season. The new deal with Pizza Hut now runs through the 2021 season.

Pizza Hut is the largest pizza chain in America, with more than 7,500 stores, more than double that of Papa John's.

Pizza Hut's chief marketing officer, Zipporah Allen, said the company will engage consumers on the deal through new products and packaging, the company's loyalty program and a continued push into beer delivery. The brand started a pilot program to deliver alcohol into homes in Phoenix late last year.

The partnership could eventually include a less traditional content play. More than half of Pizza Hut orders now take place without the customer calling on the phone -- 70 percent of online orders are placed via mobile, an industry high.

"The NFL and pizza appeal to the same demographic, which is everyone," said Renie Anderson, the NFL's senior vice president of partnership and sponsorship management. "Fans watch our game and they do it around a pizza box. That's why it's one of the most important categories in sports sponsorship."

Pizza Hut's first opportunity to take advantage of the sponsorship will be the NFL draft, which will take place in late April at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Pizza Hut's headquarters are in nearby Plano.

"Having one of America's classic brands like Pizza Hut happily come aboard in an important sponsorship category is another reminder of the continued power of the NFL," Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan, chairman of the league's business ventures committee, said in a statement provided to ESPN.

Papa John's has an official deal with the Dallas Cowboys, and team owner Jerry Jones is an investor of a franchisee that owns 94 Papa John's, but the former NFL sponsor can no longer have a presence at league events.

"The NFL and Papa John's have made a mutual decision to shift from their official league sponsorship to a focus on partnerships with 22 local NFL teams, presence in broadcast and digital media, and key personalities in the sport," the league and company said Tuesday in a joint statement.

Pizza Hut currently has no deal with NFL players. In the past, the company has used Aaron Rodgers, Tony Romo and Terrell Owens to promote its product.
