WASHINGTON — Ted Leonsis, who took over as owner of the Washington Wizards earlier this year, said on his blog Thursday that he is considering changing the NBA club's name back to the Bullets.
The team was known as the Bullets when it began play in Baltimore in 1963. A decade later, the team was moved to suburban Washington but stayed with the Bullets nickname until former owner Abe Pollin changed to Wizards in 1997.
In a checklist of 101 things he was doing to try and show change to make the club better, Leonsis checked a box marked under consideration about changing the name to Bullets, then expounded on that in a posting Thursday.
"I am not hinting at anything. I have remained consistent," Leonsis said. "I can?t believe this is the news that was generated from my blog post.
"As I noted and have said time and time again, it takes more than two years to do a name change and that is after you agree on a look and feel. We haven?t spent any time on this matter as we had 101 things to do now.
"Because so many people are asking, it is 'under consideration.'"
