Actually I'm black and have started to get into hockey. Been to a couple of games. The thing that trips me out is that the league is trying to promote Crosby as the "Best" up and coming hockey since Wayne Gretsky, but they are only doing so because he is from North America. But everybody knows that Ovey is by far better.

I agree, I'm from pittsburgh so I hear a lot about Sid the Kid. Dude is to timid on the ice. Ov is a monster out there plus he hates the Pens,he hates Malkin they really have "BEEF".
Hell... I've been selling tix in the DC area for 13 years and this kid is keeping my supplemental income alive... cuz aint a muhfukka tryna see the sorry azz Wizards or Nats, that's for damn sure!!!! I get the Redskins for 8 home games, but that aint enough. I'm fast becoming a hockey fan just cuz of watching Ovechkin play..... the kid is sick!!!!
Well I play hockey and I am black as some folks may remember from some of my previous hockey posts. Ovechkin definitely has more appeal than crosby because he has way more flair and excitement playing the game. Crosby has Malkin (who is better than crosby too) and he takes a lot of pressure off so Crosby doesn't have to be at his best every night for them to win. The Caps on the other hand go they way Ovy goes, if he scores they normally win..if you contain him they take Losses.
PS. I was down at a capitals game a few years ago with a friend on mine from VA and was amazed at the amount of black folk at the game. I presumed they were regulars since cats had hockey jerseys and everything, definitely different than flyers games up here. DC seems to have a sizable black hockey fan base.

I got kicked out of a private high school my freshman year for cutting so much and fighting and shit. before i got kicked out tho - we all had mentors - and my mentor was working hard to keep me in the school. so he saw that i hadn't even registered for a PE class spring semester and I needed one in order to not get mandatory expulsion. so by the time i registered for a PE class - the only thing available was ice hockey.
so i took that shit never having skated before and was the only black kid in the class. by the end of the semester i was swerving on them crackers. i liked it so much it was the only class i went to. still got kicked out tho.
that said. ovey gets it in. Sid is definitely overrated - and if black folk had the opportunity and resources to play ice hockey they would run it. the barrier to black success in ice hockey - like in baseball - is finances and infrastructure.

I agree with this statement wholeheartedly, I would also add that another barrier would be getting over the stigma that "Hockey isn't for us." Most cities have non-profit groups that will essentially provide everything for a child to learn the game at little to no cost(i.e. Ed Snyder foundation in Philly, Hockey in the Hood in Pittsburgh, Fort DuPont in D.C., Hockey in Harlem in NYC, Detroit Hockey Assoc. etc.) They also provided education resources so they can have a well rounded experience.
For adults, most local rinks have programs to learn-to-skate and learn-to-play-hockey.
I know it is difficult for some of us that live in warmer climates that aren't traditional hockey areas to appreciate the game. However for us in the Northeast and Midwest, its something that may surprise you.
