Resurging Mexican featherweight Orlando Salido will squeeze in one more fight into a Cinderella-esque 2011 campaign when he returns to the ring on December 17 in his hometown of Ciudad Obregon, Sonora, Mexico.

Salido will face once-beaten Dominican challenger Carlos Manuel Reyes in the second defense of the featherweight title he won earlier this in a massive upset over Juan Manuel Lopez. The December showcase appearance is designed as means to keep him active while in pursuit of a rematch with Lopez, which is being eyed for the first half of 2012.

“It’s a great way to keep Orlando active, and give him one more fight in his hometown,” said a source close to Salido's co-promoter, Zanfer Promotions. “Orlando has enjoyed a tremendous year, and the fight with Reyes is a perfect way to stay sharp heading into next year.”

Salido became a two-time featherweight titlist with the upset knockout win over Lopez on Showtime, having since successfully defended the title with an 11th round of Kenichi Yamaguchi of Japan this past July in Ciudad Obregon.

Though no fight is truly a gimme in the up and down career of Salido, the December 17 on paper is more of a showcase than his preceding two fights this year.

Reyes (23-1-1, 15KO) turned pro in 2007 and makes his first attempt at a major title. The fight will be just his second outside of his native Dominican Republic, a December ’09 road trip to Haiti that coincides with the lone loss of his career. The Dominican enters the bout riding an 11-fight unbeaten streak against largely nondescript competition.

A Salido win in December sets the stage for a highly anticipated rematch to one of the year’s biggest upsets, and also the crowning achievement of a career approaching 17 years in service. It’s been an up-and-down ride for Salido, who turned pro at age 15 and has never enjoyed an unbeaten streak of more than nine fights at any point in his career.

He enters the December fight having won two straight following a competitive points loss to Yuriorkis Gamboa last September. The bout brought a quick end to a title reign that began just four months prior when he outpointed Cristobal Cruz to avenge an earlier loss.

The Mexican veteran fell short in his first shot at a major title, dropping a decision to then-featherweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez in 2004. A then career-best performance against Roberto Guerrero in 2006 was thought to ignite his first title reign, but the result was changed to a no-contest after testing positive for a banned substance.
