Omar Portee, known on the streets as O.G. Mack, was a founding architect of the East Coast Bloods, a man who turned a prison cell at Rikers Island into the command center for one of the most violent criminal enterprises in New York history. He was a charismatic leader who built the United Blood Nation in 1993, creating a system of codes, hand signals, and a ruthless culture that put violence above all else, and he ran his empire from the Bronx with an iron fist.

His reputation was built on brutality. In 1996, he led a vicious jailhouse attack on members of the Latin Kings using a spearhead carved from a Scrabble game piece. After his release, he split the Bronx into a criminal fiefdom, his Bloods ruling over drug sellers, prostitutes, and thieves. New members as young as 16 were initiated with 31-second beatings, handed semi-automatic guns, and ordered to bash and kill rivals. When a female gang member told him she wanted out of a credit-card fraud scheme, he heated a knife on a stove and burned her leg, leaving permanent scars.

His downfall came in 2002 when a federal jury convicted him on nine charges, including racketeering, conspiring to murder, selling narcotics, and credit-card fraud. The murder conspiracy involved a Bronx drug dealer known as K-Born, who was shot at with an AK-47 and a 9mm semiautomatic after a dispute over money. In April 2003, Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald sentenced him to 50 years in prison, telling him he had "glorified lawlessness" and inducted "impressionable young people into his life of crime." A prosecutor called him "a crime wave unto himself."

Portee, now in his mid-50s, is serving his time at ADX Florence, the federal supermax prison in Colorado, with a projected release date of May 23, 2044. The man who once ruled the Bronx from a prison cell now spends his days in a concrete box, his empire dismantled, his name forever tied to the violence he unleashed on New York's streets
