My son's teacher (who is a black woman) asked if I would present some sort of lesson on Hip Hop to her class. She said all the kids LOVE rap music and it would be cool if they understood more about the history and culture. This is a 2nd grade class. The school is pretty diverse in terms of race. And the class is about 40% Black. I have no idea what to show this kids. Any suggestions?

If it were me I would be like no disrespect but why not ask me to give a presentation on what I do for a living? Seems like she stereotyping you. But that’s me not knowing her or the tone when she asked you.

Nah... she's knows me and knows Im into music publishing. And she's cool. Very nice lady. I think she's just trying to add some excitement to her class.

Have the kids mamas dress up as video hoes, record them popping & dropping that ass.... then make them slide down a pole & swipe ya credit card btwn their ass cheeks. :dunno:

I would start with the Self Expression Origins story, followed by the Creativity Angle(Jazz-like), then finish with a light-covering of the Social Consciousness Aspect(now missing in HipHop)... in hopes of inspiring somebody in the future.... INSPIRE the KIDS to do GREAT WORKS!!!!

Second grade they're about 7 or 8? Shit, you're not gonna want to do any historical lecturing. If you can't hold their attention it's a wrap. Something colorful like pictures of early rappers and explain (very simply) what they did and why they're important vis-a-vis today. Participation is good too. Maybe write some simple lyrics to hand out, let everybody do a bar or come up with their own demonstrating the creative process.
Also, get them to beatbox. Kids love that shit.

Honestly, these are second graders in 2021. They will have very little to no concept of hip-hop from how we knew it to be.

Don’t get complicated. Keep is simple. Pick a few mainstream artists and show the evolution of the rap from then to now.

Remember, they’re in the 2nd grade.

As or props, you can show them what forms of medium that we listened to in Hip Hop's history. Cassettes, LP's etc.
I participated in a career day a few years ago and that was a part of my presentation. The kids were amazed at LP's the most. I even have a blob of vinyl that I got from a press plant that is the equivalent of that amount used to "smash" out into an LP.
:dunno:

Great opportunity to talk about the financial aspect and how getting good education will help them in the future. Of course with 2nd graders you have to make it fun yet educational at the same time.
