This is a simple question to the sports fans of SOL. Should there be a playoff system in Division 1A College Football? Please explain why you think there should, or shouldn't be one...
My Colin-fied Opinion:
The simple answer would be yes (and I do think that there should be one), but it will never happen unless President Obama actually makes a big deal about it (I love how the Republicans would spin that -- "He cares more about College Football than the economy!"). Some reasons it will not happen in our lifetimes:
1) It will make the other "major" bowl games insignificant. There's tons of money made in those bowl games and if all the focus is placed on a "College Super Bowl" no one will care about the other games. (Look how the National Title Game has already made the other major bowls diminished -- which is why they rotate which bowl is the National Title Bowl).
2) If you think there is controversy in picking teams 1 & 2, imagine trying to pick the teams for the playoffs. The same computer/coach system everyone derides now would still be used to pick the playoff teams. How to determine which teams make it? Conference winners? Rankings? What about all the "Boise State" type teams that will go undefeated and get ranked 9th (and miss playoffs)? The tournament system works for Basketball, while there is always some controversy over bubble teams or team rankings, there are enough teams (65) to ensure the teams that deserve to be there and the fluky/lucky conference title winners all get into the tournament -- Football will not be able to do that.
3) As soon as some marginal team runs a lucky streak and manages to win the "National Title", everyone will be screaming to dismantle the system.
4) The colleges themselves will never agree to it. With the exception of powerhouse money-laden teams who would want to have playoffs to bolster their bragging rights if they win, the other small schools do not want it. Again it is about money. We may not care about the 7-11 Squishee Bowl featuring two 6-5 teams, but those schools make money just from being selected and showing up.
5) Fans love controversy and it sparks the sport. Does anyone argue whether the Giants were the best team last year? No, they won the Super Bowl despite how they played during the early part of the season. What sparks college football is that constant debate over which team is better than the other. While fans would love a definitive way of knowing who is the best team, they would then have nothing to scream about all year.
6) When would they play the playoff games? The kids already do not attend class from August to January already, now stretch the season to February? Or cut down on regular season games?
