This is a simple question to the sports fans of SOL. Should there be a playoff system in Division 1A College Football? Please explain why you think there should, or shouldn't be one...

That was fly wasn't it? Naw, I think there should be one. In my opinion the field is the only place things should be determined. I hate seeing things being settled by polls and computers. I think there should be a playoff to let the top 8 or 10 teams play each other to crown an undisputed champion...What's your opinion though?

Every other sport has a damn playoff so why shouldnt they? Every year somebody gets fucked over. At least if there is a playoff nobody can bitch if they got they ass beat on the field.

My Colin-fied Opinion:

The simple answer would be yes (and I do think that there should be one), but it will never happen unless President Obama actually makes a big deal about it (I love how the Republicans would spin that -- "He cares more about College Football than the economy!"). Some reasons it will not happen in our lifetimes:

1) It will make the other "major" bowl games insignificant. There's tons of money made in those bowl games and if all the focus is placed on a "College Super Bowl" no one will care about the other games. (Look how the National Title Game has already made the other major bowls diminished -- which is why they rotate which bowl is the National Title Bowl).

2) If you think there is controversy in picking teams 1 & 2, imagine trying to pick the teams for the playoffs. The same computer/coach system everyone derides now would still be used to pick the playoff teams. How to determine which teams make it? Conference winners? Rankings? What about all the "Boise State" type teams that will go undefeated and get ranked 9th (and miss playoffs)? The tournament system works for Basketball, while there is always some controversy over bubble teams or team rankings, there are enough teams (65) to ensure the teams that deserve to be there and the fluky/lucky conference title winners all get into the tournament -- Football will not be able to do that.

3) As soon as some marginal team runs a lucky streak and manages to win the "National Title", everyone will be screaming to dismantle the system.

4) The colleges themselves will never agree to it. With the exception of powerhouse money-laden teams who would want to have playoffs to bolster their bragging rights if they win, the other small schools do not want it. Again it is about money. We may not care about the 7-11 Squishee Bowl featuring two 6-5 teams, but those schools make money just from being selected and showing up.

5) Fans love controversy and it sparks the sport. Does anyone argue whether the Giants were the best team last year? No, they won the Super Bowl despite how they played during the early part of the season. What sparks college football is that constant debate over which team is better than the other. While fans would love a definitive way of knowing who is the best team, they would then have nothing to scream about all year.

6) When would they play the playoff games? The kids already do not attend class from August to January already, now stretch the season to February? Or cut down on regular season games?

I don't know if playoffs is the answer....but there definitely needs to be some changes....

Personally I don't like how the BIG 12 is set up split north and south....The south has dominated the conference for years but the north teams still get a shot at the conference title when they aren't playing nearly at the levels of the teams in the south.

If anything OU and TX needed to play again for the championship and the shot to go to the National Title game this year.... There is definitely no way Missouri should have a chance to claim a conference title this year!

Here's another question...In addition to your opinion about the need for a D-1 college playoff, do you think there will actually be one at some point in the future? If so, do you believe it will come when the current TV deals end, or will it come as the result of something else?

Absolutely there needs to be a playoff! But a playoff would lessen the importance of those who rank the college teams, that's why it doesn't yet exist.

There's too many variables that come into the ranking of teams. The Associated Press polls the sportswriters, the USA Today and ESPN polls coaches. The teams won loss records seemingly mean nothing anymore. Not with so many hands in the decision making. All this at the expense of the colleges who would stand to make millions with a championship series. It's a crying shame. :smh:

Obama has made his feelings felt on this matter lets see if it makes a difference.

YES there needs to be a playoff!!

Just look at the mess in the Big 12 South this year. UT beat OU and they are more than likely gonna be at home watching the national championship game. And in 2004 when there were 3 undefeated teams from BCS conferences, and Auburn got left out. Plus, teams like Utah and Boise State are routinely going undefeated and they don't get a chance to play for the title...they have proven they can run with the big dogs...they recently beat Oklahoma and Pittsburgh in BCS bowls.

I've heard the argument that a playoff will "diminish" the regualr season...but I disagree. And, no I don't think there will be a playoff anytime soon...ESPN just outbid FOX for the rights to broadcast the BCS, so we're stuck with a least until that deal runs out. Even then I'm not sure it'll happen. :smh:

I don't know about you, but I was annoyed by hearing commentators say today's Big 12, and SEC Title games "had the feel of National Semi-Finals"...Get the fuck outta here, we need the real thing...

CO-SIGN and Texas gets fucked with no Vaseline because they did not play yesterday.

I am not a big college fan (live in NYC where pro teams rule and we have sucky college sports programs), but I always like to watch a good game and get intrigued over the college football rankings.

I hate college football it is only good for betting on and yes the need some kind of playoff system. If you play D 1 ball and you go undefeated you should at least have a chance to play for hte championship. The way it is set up now it is better to lose early in the season and then work your way back to the top. How many teams in the top 10 have 1 lost? They need to do it like they do D1-a.

Switching speeds real quick...

Who do you think will win the Heisman tonight. Who do you think should win it? Will it be McCoy, Bradford, or Tebow?
