Just got into the market about three months ago. Made a couple of mistakes but it was well worth money lost. I look at it as paying for an education.
Now, I'm in the full swing of things. I study, analyze and read up every day. Hit some pretty nice stocks. I will give you an example.
Following stock made out nice for me. A Hepatitis C company that was bought out.
01/03/2012 INHX INHIBITEX INC
+20.000 Price: $10.10
12/20/2011 INHX INHIBITEX INC
+50.000 Price: $10.50
12/13/2011 INHX INHIBITEX INC
+30.000 Price: $14.10
11/25/2011 INHX INHIBITEX INC
+80.000 Price: $11.62
11/07/2011 INHX INHIBITEX INC
+20.000 Price: $10.15
The reason I kept buying is because another Hep C company was bought out prior to my third purchase. All the analysts and experts predicted that INHX will be the next Hep C company to be bought. So I ended up with 200 shares.
The buy out price end up being $26/share which was announce on 1/7/2012. You can do the math and see what I netted.
Trust me on this one. If you got it, take the chance on these two below:
ACHN - ACHILLION PHARMACEUTICALS INC
IDIX - IDENIX PHARMACEUTICALS INC
They are the next two Hep C companies that are predicted to be bought this year. Once INHX buyout was announce, ACHN and IDIX both shot through the roof. They are falling little right now which I believe they are being set up to be acquired.
I'm no expert by far because like I mentioned above I just started but I'm definitely in the black now by a decent amount.

its set up and ready to go. i used the defaults except i dropped minimum amt to $1
game lasts till Dec 31st.
Where/how do you prospect potential stocks? And, how do you analyze those potential stocks to figure out if you wanna buy or not?
EGTK Energtek, Inc. is looking pretty good right now.
No, but I'll get in.
depends on if you are long term or short term. if you are short term you probably dont care about the fundamental stuff and you're probably going on things volume, momentum, news (international), interest rates, etc. depending on the stock and what sector its in.
long term you gotta do your research. basically trying to put value on the company. if a company is strong, regardless of what happens in greece or europe in the long run the company will do well and you'll see profit.
i HIGHLY recommend you get an account at tdameritrade.com. they have excellent tools that im now learning how to utilize.
see image below:

you can use moving averages to pinpoint entry points, that is if you are day trading. there are other methods of course.
there are options to listen in on conference calls, and you get news alerts too.
its free to open an account, obviously you need money to trade. BUT you can paper trade, basically a virtual simulator in real time, you get virtual money of $100,000 to practice. its really robust, powerful tools there.
marketwatch has good news to read in the morning.
thats also where our stock game is
http://www.marketwatch.com/
a great spot is here http://finviz.com/
you can find market movers there, top gainers, top losers, upgrades, etc. i pay attention to the new highs and the upgrades, as upgrades can mean short term gains, possible 1-5% gains and up. depends on who's making the upgrade.
there's also google finance
http://www.google.com/finance
yahoo finance
http://finance.yahoo.com/
and my new one that i use, CNN-MONEY
http://money.cnn.com/
when you go to those websites, look to the left, right, bottom, top,..... for articles with titles such as "today's movers" or "stocks to watch" or whatever random title they use. while this doesnt mean you should ALWAYS buy those stocks, they can be an indicator of stocks that are undervalued, strong, have been upgraded, and look good on paper and might be worth a look. you should still do your research, but its a good place to start.
i dont read it now, but one of the papers/magazines i used to buy all the time is Barrons. i used to get my stock picks from there years ago and i made some good money. they used to have a section where they feature solid buys or companies to look out for. they have a "daily analysis" on their online website http://online.barrons.com/online_exclusives?mod=BOL_other_tnav_analysis
see also: http://blogs.barrons.com/stockstowatchtoday/?mod=BOL_other_tnav_blogs
there are lots of places online, i know i wrote a lot, but i hope you benefit from at least one of the above links.
some of the stocks im keeping an eye on
STEC
UYM
BAC (they downgraded it, but i like bank of america hopefully it stays above 7.05)
NBG (good news for greece should send this stock higher. hopeful)
MSI
MNTA
INVN
those are the stocks ive either made money from in real life, and/or made money in the game. i got those stocks from reading the above links.
good luck to all, if anyone has more info please share.
i hope some or all of you make some real money in the market
Does wells Fargo brokerage have a app like etrade - etrade does charge alot for trades- I'm looking to invest again
hell fucking noEtrade has the best layout ever...
I have an account with them but its mostly a savings account, I plan on using them for long term holds only, since they want about ten dollars a trade....
but their layout and financial tools I think are second to none.
and worth it for the newbie, its so easy to navigate through...
well fargo is not bad, but its nowhere near as user friendly as etrade.
but the hundred free trades from wells fargo was the deal breaker for me...to make my primary account.
Where/how do you prospect potential stocks? And, how do you analyze those potential stocks to figure out if you wanna buy or not?
I have couple of financial apps on my phone (fidelity, google and yahoo). They all have current news information. I also use nasdaq.com alot to see what analysts are saying.
To me we all know the blue chippers (IBM, APPLE, GOOGLE, ETC.). I started reseaching the small cap stocks and also listen to rumors of potential acquisitions. To me the acquisition game is a hard one because by the time you hear about it, the stock has already risen almost to its buyout prices. The other two Hep C. stocks (IDIX and ACHN) are highly liketo be bought out within this year.
After I get some leads, I just put them on my watch list to see what they are doing over weeks time and put my ear to the ground to see what the experts are saying. If you are not a day trader then the potential of losing everything at once is not that strong unless shit happen like Netflix back in the fall (drop from 300/share to 62/share because of dumb shit by the CEO).
Lastly, every morning I check those apps to see what is going on in Europe, who is announcing revenue statements and potential buyouts. They all give you an indication plus tons of other info that can help you decide.
nice going.
i like to keep an eye on my watch list too so that when the market tumbles, i know where the discounts are if the decline was due to a scare in international news.
do you own shares of netflix? its looking better and better i just cant figure out if i missed the boat, i havent looked into netflix, only at its chart
I took a beating to day with NFLX and IDIX. They both dropped like a ton of bricks. I hope tomorrow will be better.
I also have to study more insider trading trends. That can give an indication of what people from the company is doing with their own stock. If they are selling then something could be up and vise-versa. There are occasions where execs have to cash in some of their stock options. If there is a case where there is selling going on check to see if they are selling because of cashing in on their options.
Why would you buy NFLX at it's recent high unless you want to go long on the stock??
Listen if you are not keeping the stocks for a long term investing plan then:
Buy on the rumor and sell on the news!
Once a stock hits mainstream news it's already over, momentum is done, people like me are looking to cash out and love people like you ready to buy at the high of the ticker.
I bought @ 73, sold @ 119 and I have no complaints with leaving 5-6 bucks on the table.
Long term the stock may double but I am not willing to tie up my money in it.
You are right. I'm going long on NETFLIX. I'm looking at the 52 weeks. It dropped yesterday on news of a new competitor from Britain. As for rumors, you are right. I believe it will grow because of direct streaming. Hey if it dont then I'm leaving about 20 on the table. Hey, that is my tuition for learning the game. I currently have 34 positions and I believe only 2 or 3 is not trending to my liking. A little less than half are double digit percentage gains. Less than a fourth are in the red. Most of those are less than one percent losses at this time.
