If he was aware from the beginning, he would have recognized Claire the moment he saw her.
My theory is that he switched timelines. The Desmond from the Alternative world is now on the island, and vice versa.

Desomond, in the side-flash has a good relationship with Charles Widmore, where as the original timeline Widmore hates Desomond's guts. When Desmond was retrieved from the device, he was all for working with Widmore.
Also, Why would the sideways Desmond ask for the planes manifest? He want's to seek out the survivors to tell them of their alternate lives perhaps.
Why did Desmond just bounce with Sayid like whatever.

Sayid referred to Desmond by name, so Desmond must have had a feeling they new each other. Also, as already stated, when Desmond came too, the chick in the glasses mentioned that Desmond and Widmore were just fighting each other.....Look, Desmond wakes up on the floor in an EMP device, has a woman mention he was just fighting Widmore, that "that thing fried your brain," sees himself in a strange place, and is referred to, by name, by a "stranger" Iraqi commando bad ass motherfucker saying he "doesn't have time to explain, but these people are dangerous, we have to go now".....You telling me you wouldn't be like "cool, lets go?"

He never pointed the gun at Desmond, referred to him by his name, said these people are dangerous and we have to go. I think the smile on Desmond's face was him taking all this new information/timeline/life in......He said a lot can change in 20 minutes himself.....

Because he is aware that he is existing in two separate lives/existence's. If he would have freaked out, the people surrounding him, Sayid, etc...would have known something was up. Can you say, keeping his cool, taking this new existence in?
So according to your theory, one Desmond wants everyone to know something is up, but yet the other one is trying to hide it from everyone?

heres a thought a little far fetched, but i'll take a stab at. Desmond asked for the flight manifest, obviously sayids name is on there. so we assume that desmond will contact everyone on the list, we dont know if he has done that as of yet, so perhaps thats why he willingly goes with sayid, because he knows who he is, and perhaps, will lead him to the other people on the list.

Good one....didn't think of that. Each timeline isn't working on the same actual time. We might get a flash sideways of Desmond doing just that in the alternate timeline.
the only thing that would make this true, is if they showed desmond contacting all the people from the flight.
Why would you have to see it for it to happen? This show doesn't hold your hand nearly that much.
The only problem I have with this theory yall throwin around, is why would Desmond be all calm around Penny? He was acting as though he had a vauge idea of who she was, but you would think that if he went thru as much shit in the original timeline for her as he has & the fact that they have a child together, he would be acting a lil more frantic, trying (and failing) to get her to remember their life together. Not calmly trying to get a date with her. Also when Desmond woke up in the room, he wasn't confused at all by the people around him. Also when Charles went to explain his plan, Desmond cut him off saying that he understood and it was no problem, why would alt. Desmond do that if he would have no idea what is going on. Maybe Desmond has an idea of what is happening and that's why he went with Sayid.
Maybe what happened with everyone is this analogy; the original and alt. versions of the lost crew live in the same room but looking thru windows on the opposite side of the room. Everyone has a wall in the middle of the room so that they are not aware of each other's existence. With Desmond, Charlie, and Faraday (altho he's Widmore in this version) (Maybe Eloise and Charles Widmore, I'm not sure), the wall is crumbling in the middle to the point where they can catch a glimpse of each other. Only difference between Desmond, Faraday, and Charlie is that only Desmond is alive on this side.

1. He doesnt want to frighten Penny away. If he came at her with Alternative timeline stories she would obviously think he was nuts, and steer clear of him.
2. When Desmond wakes up he gives the "Where the fuck am I?" look, and says "How long was I unconscious?".
3. Why would he ask for the planes manifest after he fell unconscious in front of Penny? What changed for him to request it?
Also, it would make sense that the original desmond not be surprised at the sight of Sayid since he saw him at the end of last weeks ep. However if it was alt Desmond, I don't care how calm he wanted to be, he would show some signs of bein shook when sayid came outta nowhere and killed that guy (especially smiling). Also he never asks who the hell are yall when he wakes up in the room, just how long was i out...

because if theres no indication that he ever met sayid off the island or spoke with him, the explanation makes no sense.
Looks like Desmond was watching alt-Desmond story unfold just like we were without being able to interfere. That's the only explanation that makes sense to me.
My answer to that is a motherfucker starts killing people with his bare hands, you're gonna do what he says. Desmond wasnt in a fighting mood, and seemed to be in some type of docile state. Im not saying that theory is 100%, but its plausible.
