The FG attempt gives you a shot at points while not moving the clock and puts you in position to win the game on the next possession, as opposed to hoping for a tie.

I understand where he's coming from. If Philly had time-outs, then the field goal makes sense. No time outs and the possibility of never seeing the ball again, you might as well go for it on 4th down.
You answered your own question. They havent been able to convert or score all night so why not go for the 3 while the clock is stopped and let your defense attempt to make a stop at home??

the FG was a bad call. if Akers missed, Dallas woulda had great field position to run out the clock and if worst case scenario, they'd punt and pin the Eagles deep in their own territory.

Honestly I can think of a couple of reasons. 1) You got the defense on their heels. You somehow stop the Cowboys and get them to punt you have no timeouts and you got a rested defense out there. Cowboys ain't gonna let that shit go. That's when doing your homework comes into play. This is Barbers time. Barber and Witten. Barber specifically. He's gonna run the clock out. I'd agree with you if they had some timeouts but they didn't have SHIT. Nothing. That challenge call was retarded by Andy.

You have a chance to put points on the board with the clock stopped. You take that. You're gonna need a defensive stop either way so you take your shot at the points. If you miss it you need a stop and a score to tie but if you make it you still need a stop but the score will then win the game.
Going for it at that point with no timeout would have basically milked the clock with no guarantee at points AND in the event of a score you would have been forced to attempt a long shot onside attempt as opposed to lining up and letting your defense do work (which it had been doing a good game of all night). Also, the odds said that they wouldnt have converted given the game play of the night.
