Challenger Jake LaMotta and world middleweight champion Marcel Cerdan weigh-in for their 1949 clash at Briggs Stadium in Detroit. "The Bronx Bull" would take the crown when Cerdan was forced to surrender after the ninth round. The Frenchman had become a one-handed fighter after he injured his left shoulder in the fight's opening round and his corner decided he was taking too much punishment. A rematch was set for later the same year but it never happened. Cerdan was journeying back to the United States from France to train for the return bout when his flight crashed in the Azores, killing all on board.
