can u write notes by fingertip? i know there is a special stylus that works on iphones and ipod touch screens but im not sure if this screen type is the same
I woulda preferred a scaled down osx to a scaled up iphone os. Wondering how good the processor is. Can't imagine gaming and using 3g will still get you 10 hours of battery life.
If I can save $50 on each textbook purchase and it doesnt do stupid shit like erase all the content if u plug it in to another computer then Id buy one this summer still. I need a good 6 months of other people doing quality control.

Another year, another iPhone OS upgrade to get excited about. They’re not saying much about it just yet, but Apple has just announced that the new iPhone SDK (complete with support for the just announced iPad tablet) will be available today.
As partially predicted by the rumor mill, iPhone applications will run on the iPad. They won’t, however, run in little floating windows, as early faked leaks assumed. Instead, they will run in “blackboxed” mode at their standard resolution, or in a simulated fullscreen mode by doubling the pixels. Everything developers (and users) have come to know and love from the iPhone — from multi-touch gestures to accelerometer support — are fully supported in the iPad.
Developers (or anyone just dying to play with the included iPad simulator) can look for it in the usual spot (http://developer.apple.com/).

If you just want to read books, get a kindle.
But if you want to read books, or have a large-screen GPS when you are driving, or let your kids play video games on-the-go, surf the web, listen to music, watch movies / youtube, or do video-conferencing, or give business presentations, or exhibit your photos as a photographer, etc., etc., etc...
.. without the hassle of carrying around a 'full laptop'...

Like JD said, wait for the 2nd gen or 3rd gen, instead of being the 1st gen beta testers, while they fix all the bugs. I think all the companies should have all the kinks worked out by 3rd gen. Apple, HP, Archos, HTC, etc.

I'm a mac consumer. Owned a g5 tower, iMac 24", MacBook, MacBook pro, had the 2g, 3g, and as I'm posting I'm typing this on a 3gs iPhone.
With that said, the tablet is weak. No multitasking at all. Ray was a huge ball to drop. As it is it's nothing more than a larger iPhone with more bells and whistles. Nothing more. It needed to have a full web browser, multitasking, a way for the user to dictate where they could store files. Why have 64gigs if it doesn't let you do with it what you please?
This machine also shuts out people who have iPhones. Who's going to want to buy a tablet that does pretty much thesame things as the phone and pay an ADDITIONAL 30 a month to AT&T? Keep in mind that when the 3g version of the tablet drops we'd be two or three months away from the new iPhone announcement.
This tablet should have been a bridge between the iPhone and MacBook. Instead it sits in the iPhone/iPod touch line.

iTunes allows you to play DRM songs on up to 4 computers. so there shouldn't be an issue with the books.
I saw this. When I get a handle on the projects I'm working on now I'll cop an iPad and port a couple of my apps to the app store. I'll probably have you kats beta test first.

Jobs didnt say this was his best work ever for nothing. Laptops are officially on their way out from this point forward - tablets are going to boom.
From there tablets will get thinner and thinner until it will be paper thin. The technology already exist for all that.
By 2020 people will be using paper thin tablets than can be flexed.
Considering this thing has that big of a screen, that good of a battery life and it's a touch screen device this has the potential to be huge.

Yeah, just hardware issues, very few, if any software issues. That's just with any new tech, regardless who makes it. And I'm sure by 2nd & 3rd gen, other features will be added on to make the devices more useful across an even wider range of uses.

Apple today at its iPad introduction announced a new version of iWork designed specifically for the iPad. The iWork for iPad application suite broadens the potential target audience for the iPad.
iWork is Apple productivity software suite, which includes Keynote (for presentations), Numbers (spreadsheets), and Pages (word processing). The new iWork for iPad suite takes advantage of the iPad's multitouch input.
At today's event, Apple's Phil Schiller demonstrated each app on the iPad. All of the iWork apps launch to a library of documents that allow you to tap on the document you want to open. An on-screen keyboard appears when you need to type text.
Keynote runs only in landscape mode, since slides are designed horizontally. Pages has a new tool called Page Navigator, where you hold your finger on the right of the iPad's screen and it brings up a loupe that lets you skim through your pages. All three iWork apps come with templates to help you create documents quickly.
According to Apple, the iWork for iPad apps can import iWork ’09 and Microsoft Office documents. When creating documents in iWork for iPad, you can send documents in iWork ’09 and PDF formats.

there'll be bugs on this OS and i'm sure when they drop the new iPhone OS and make a port over to the tablet (refuse to call it the iPad) at or around the same time, there will be more bugs. nature of the beast.
i hear you, if you are a reader, you get a Kindle. if you want a laptop lite, you get a netbook. those consumer are not necessarily one and the same. the tablet is the bridge between those consumers as well as the bridge between the capabilities of the iphone and a laptop. the Kindle market and netbook market aren't the greatest because the options available to the consumer weren't that great prior to today.
the big thing is that if you are one or the other, the tablet covers you at a comparable price to either the Kindle DX ($489) or a Netbook, plus you get so much more from the app store.

when they drop the new iPhone is June, it'll be interesting to see what content deals they secure by then for the tablet.
i can tell you know, most creative professionals will want one. writers, artists, photogs, ad agencies, publishers, tv and film. making presentations on this shit will be a blast.
I'm feeling the same way, I love the features that the Archos Series has, but just the same, why shouldn't someone get the new iPad? What does the Archos have that some developer won't make into an app?
I think this is a win for Apple for people who were riding the fence on getting an iPhone/iPod Touch and wanted to incorporate a device that works like a netbook. Kindle and Sony's ebooks might have to call it a wrap except for those diehard fans of that medium. Then, you have those that, no matter what Apple product that have already, will go out in droves and buy this item.

Is it really even fair to try to compare a netbook to this iPad/Slate devices? Netbooks & Laptops, of course will have a big advantage over these new devices. True iPad has an appstore, netbooks & laptops, don't need it, cause it's actually full fledge software, running CPU's & GPUs, along with compared to Pad/Slates, huge ass HDDs. And music doesn't count either, cause you don't have to use any appstore for it with netbooks & laptops. The CPU alone, makes them 2 different markets. I'm really not a fan of netbooks, when I didn't really have a problem with laptops. These new depending on how much they can really fit into a household, will determine how useful it will be. It is pretty much agreed that they will be quite useful in a lot of aspects of the business world.
That point right there is really something I think they are banking on, not just Apple, but all of the companies.
