A couple of players have went this way and the media always clowned them for it. And it looked like it was some type of collusion betweem the media the agents the managers and the league. Because the current systems feeds so many people and keeps the factory moving but not necessarily the best for the players.
I think in many cases because the extensions are so standard it makes perfect sense.
