Maradona blasts FIFA for giving Messi award

http://www.espnfc.com/fifa-world-cu...-maradona-lionel-messi-award-a-marketing-plan

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has hit out at FIFA's decision to award the Golden Ball accolade for the best player of the World Cup to Lionel Messi.

Messi, who missed a good chance as Argentina lost 1-0 to Germany in the final, was presented with the award after the match.

The selection put him ahead of players such as Colombia's James Rodriguez, Germany's Thomas Muller and the Netherlands' Arjen Robben.

But Maradona said that despite four goals in Argentina's seven matches, Messi had not been the player of the tournament and his selection as Golden Ball winner was "a marketing plan."

"Messi? I would give him heaven if possible," the 1986 World Cup winner told pan-Latin American TV channel Telesur.

"But it's not right when someone wins something that he shouldn't have won just because of some marketing plan."

Messi said the award "means very little to me at this moment" and added: "It is a pity not to go home with the cup, but we go home with our heads high. We can return calm from this World Cup.

"It's very painful to lose the way we did, because we were near penalties.

"We had three clear chances -- mine, Gonzalo Higuain's and Rodrigo Palacio's -- but we couldn't get it. Now we have to move forward."

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said he didn't expect Messi to receive the award.

"What do you want -- shall I tell the truth or be diplomatic?" Blatter said. "I am going to say the truth, I was surprised that he was chosen and [surprised] to see him come up to get the award."

Blatter is a piece of shit. Why try to assess blame to the player for accepting the award. He is the same piece of shit who would have questioned his dignity and respect for the game had he refused the award. This shit is solely on the FIFA mafia. Period.

No one really is. It's an absolute shock considering how ghost he was.

I think even upon acceptance, Messi knew he didn't deserve it.

Absolute fuckery from FIFA and journalists alike.

How does the golden ball go to a guy who can't break the list of having shots on target?

:smh:

people were looking at me funny when i said if Argentina would win they will say is messi the best ever.

He's 27 now... I can't see him doing it at 31. This was SUPPOSED to be his World Cup.

This.

The injury bug is already biting him.

He plays at such a high level and take hits.

Staying injury free will be a huge challenge.

That's what I was arguing with people about in this very thread. He won the player of the cup award when there was at least 5-6 players that were CLEARLY better than him over the cup...i mean not even close.. if he had delivered a cup to argentina, they would have been saying Messi >> Maradona at minimum.

It's over for him now though. He's had 3 cups and not produced enough.

I haven't even been listening but are, real, football followers saying he didn't have a team around him again and all that shit?

Because they actually had a decent squad this year, granted some guys dealing with the injury bug but don't think he can get much of a pass for this WC

Nah I don't think there's any pass we can give him anymore. I think it's safe to say now, that at this point Messi has duly benefitted from arguably one of the greatest XI's ever assembled when Barcelona we're at their peak. It's the downward spiral from here on out.

However I will say this, Messi is the ultimate team player. And he's definitely someone you'd build a team around, but only Guardiola has achieved this feat so far.

Messi is simply not what Pele or Maradona...

... and you Barca fans are going to hate this...

or Cristiano are... individual talents.

He's going to have to prove he can do it on his own, (which means leaving Spain) the way these guys have with different personnel, formations, and tactics, but I honestly think it's a little too late for this, unless he does it this or next summer which is unlikely.

Say what you want about the other three, but those guys show up when needed.

I'm glad Argentina didn't win on penalty kicks. They just weren't scoring. Germany deserved that win. But I hadn't really watched the Argentina games. Didn't realize Messi is pretty damn good. Elusiveness, fluidity and speed was something to watch. Like that elf in LOTR fight scenes, moving in another gear. Good tourney overall.

I can agree with Pele and Diego but ronaldo.....nah. I don't see how he is any less of an individual talent than he is. Plus when he always show up when needed either. He is just as far off (ronaldo) from those two as Lio is.

Fam, Ronaldo has shown up on the big stage plenty of times, the latest being this run to the cup. But even before that, he's done it in champions league Finals, Domestic matches, international matches (when healthy) etc.

But to take it one step further again, Ronaldo has done it with United, Madrid and Portugal. Three different outfits but te same results most times.

Messi did it with the greatest team ever, and....

:hmm: If I remember correctly he wasn't the integral part in the CL final. And take this WC....without Messi, Arg wouldn't have made it out the group. How did Port do with him?

I'm not saying he hasn't stepped up big, but like finals and things, I've seen him more ghost than not but is there in the lead up to it. And you can't tell me he hasn't carried this Barca team more times than not, especially in recent years where the run of that great team definitely ended.

exactly.

they did the same thing with the ballon d'or a few times. they gave it to messi when he didnt deserve it. shit i can remember in 2010 cristian ronaldo deserve the ball or iniesta but they gave it to him instead.

they say messi is the man at barcelona i kept saying its iniesta. you have one guy that plays for argentina that cant perform. then they say its player thats fucking him up. then they got rid of them players and build the team around him and he still cant perform. then you have iniesta that won the european cup and the world cup back to back. but whenever there is a award they give to messi.

shit macherano deserved the award more than messi.

shit cr7 won it the last time but thats because he shot portugal to the world cup. if sweden would have won the would had gave to messi.

thats what people dont understand ronaldo and robben have proven it all the leagues the played. and messi benefited from a good xavi and iniesta. i have seen messi play in his prime without iniesta and xavi and he was struggling. it wasnt as bad as Argentina but he was struggling

Lemme go on record real quick and say that nobody appreciates a pass more than me. I find greater joy to give the killer pass in a match, rather than scoring the actual goal. That being said, at the end of the day, nobody gives two flying fucks about the pass. Thats just the ficklness of most fans.

Messi has given his assists here and there, but this is the exact reason players like Xavi, Iniesta, Kroos, Coutinho and all great delivery men are constantly overlooked for goalscorers.

Now sure, we may see and appreciate what he may be doing off the ball, and you're right, he did help them get to the finals by opening teams up with his passing, but in the larger picture, most speak of players who score goals to change matches single handedly.

That's where Messi may come up just a little short.

Again, I'm not on the Messi bashing tirade. I think he's an outstanding talent indeed, and any club would love to have him, that goes without saying, but given the criteria and versatility of the others, it's simply difficult to make any more excuses for him.

Maradona dominated ONE cup...1986...He didnt do shit in the other two.

You think Argentina would have made it to the finals in 1990 without Maradona?

and in 1990 he was more a midfield than a striker.

As for 1994......oh well, he was on PED.

I'm not speculating on Ifs.

I'm just talking about facts. Maradona dominated one cup. He was shell of himself in 1990 and scored one goal and that was on penalty kicks. He is no way shape or form dominated in 1990 or in 1982.

I agree that he didn't dominate and I even said he was washed up but I wouldn't go on record and say "he didn't do shit".

christiano aint shit... you cant know messi for not showing up when christiano until recently was known for choking in the big game

Harsh, but I get it. Fact remains, I wanna see Messi leave Catalan comfort and prove he's a complete player. I'll retract my argument once he's dominated another league and shows up with Argentina when it counts.

only team i see him going is bayern. since they try to play the same style. but its gonna be tough specially with suarez and neymar. one of the reasons messi could do what he do is cause iniesta and xavi aint selfish.

If his name wasn't Maradona, his play wouldn't have even been commented on. He was just a marginal player in the 1990.... much like Cristiano this world cup... he had the great cross against the U.S. and the easy goal against Ghana were the keep handing it too him right in front of the net..i know he was injured but he really didn't do much the entire cup.

yeah. it's harsh but we have to be harsh when we are comparing people to Pele and Maradona.

Messi is done. He'll always be a level below those Pele, Maradona regardless of how many FIFA player of the year awards they give him. He had his chances and he came up short. Even in the final, he had ample opportunity to make a real impact and he came up short.
