nope. he scores and Argentina wins, that's it. He's already a better club player than Maradona by every measurable statistic. He pretty much won every game for them except for this one. Even Argentines are ready to hand this over to Messi. And he still has at least 4 good year left.

The only thing holding Messi back is a big game in this final on sunday. He has his legacy in his hand's right now. He needs to win and play well (goals or assists).

His club stat might be better than maradona but he is not a better club player.

When messi can carry a team like napoli and play in the roughness tournament and win a championship then yes, he will be better.

He play for Barca, a team loaded with stars.

Messi actually got shut out in the two last games .

Love his game, especially he is a Barca but he is no Diego.

Maradona '86>>>>> any messi.

Barco is loaded with stars but he's delivering like no other and he's not the first player playing on a loaded team.

He doesn't need to score a game in every match. In the last match, he didn't score but he created the goal with the assist to Di Maria. Essentially, Messi was directly involved (with goals or assists) in every win except this scoreless one today.

If he delivers the World Cup to Argentina, he'll have the world cup win to match Maradona and his club stats all trump Maradona's. If he actually has a great performance on Sunday, it's a wrap.. for Argentines at least... delivering a cup IN BRAZIL is the greatest achievement of all time

I used to make the same argument about Messi and the super-stacked Barca teams too so you're preaching to the choir.

real talk... this shit is only once every 4 years and a lot of these countries have nothing else they are good at ...nothing.. this is the only thing they can go around the world and say "we are the best" at something. I'm not just making this up either.. they will tell you that themselves... that's another reason why they don't want to see the U.S. get good at soccer.. they even say it to me like you guys don't need to be good at everything.

I can understand...they get their self esteem from a sporting event, while we really don't give a fuck.

Maybe that's why the bad person in me finds all the crying faces funny...

It's still just a game folks...

Brazilians, and every other country that hosts these events should be mad...at spending millions building these stadiums, that will go to rot after the games....while so many live in poverty:smh:

A lot of people were mad.. but they're mad now for real .... billions spend and an all-time ass whooping on top of it... :smh::lol:

I understand it because I've spent so many years down here but I was laughing too.. it's just not that serious... but it is here... for instance, people who date from rival teams (brazilian soccer teams) have real family disputes over what they will raise the team as (fan of which team) and it can get serious man... :smh::lol:

Ironically, Van Gaal was Romero's first manager in Europe when the goalkeeper joined Dutch club AZ Alkmaar in 2009.

"I didn't teach Romero to stop penalties," Van Gaal said. "We were the club that brought him to Europe because he was a big talent. He is the one who has the merits for that. ... Alkmaar was his first [European] club and I was the manager there."

Romero gave credit to his former manager after the match.

"I went to the dressing room to congratulate him," the goalkeeper said of Van Gaal. "He helped me a lot when I arrived in Holland in a completely different country. He spoke Spanish and helped me a lot. So just as I'm grateful to Alejandro, I'm also grateful to Van Gaal and everything he did for me.

"He is a person that teaches a lot to the players how to grow. He helped me grow. I arrived when I was 20 years old and I will be forever grateful to that coach."

Man accused of punching soccer referee now facing second-degree murder charge

A Dearborn man accused of assault a soccer referee, who later died from his injuries, is now facing a murder charge.

Basel Abdul-Amir Saad, 36, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 44-year-old John Bieniewicz, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced today. According to the office, the original charge Saad was facing of assault with intent to do great bodily harm will be dismissed.

Saad allegedly punched Bieniewicz in the head on June 29 after he became upset that he was going to be ejected from a soccer game in Livonia, the prosecutor’s office said.

Bieniewicz, of Westland, was taken to a local hospital, but later died.

According to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office, Bieniewicz died from blunt force trauma to the neck.

“The entire soccer world mourns with the family upon the death of John Bieniewicz. This is especially tragic because it happened as the World Cup dominates our television screens,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement released today. “The alleged actions of this defendant cannot be tolerated and there must be action taken in our legislature to make sure that there are stronger penalties when a referee is the victim during organized sport.”

Saad is expected to be arraigned on the amended charge Thursday in Livonia’s 16th District Court, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Definitely not the first to play with a loaded team but we are talking about him and maradona not him and other players. He didn't create the goal in that match against Belgium. Di Maria was passing the ball on the right wing and it deflected and went to Higuain. Argentina got lucky on that one.

Stats in football can be misleading. You can't just look at it and try to compare players. Christiano club stat trumps Pele, is he a better player than Pele?

Maradona is not even the leading goal scorer for Argentina.

Messi have major problems in this WC dealing with double-marking something Maradona perfected.

I think argentineans just want to replace maradona because of his tainted legacy (drugs, ped, handball).

Actually Maradona cemented his legacy against Germany, let's see if messi can do the same.

Have to agree with all this here.

If Messi raises that trophy Sunday, the torch will have been passed.

Ppl will tell you that Maradona is better than Pele, so you telling me if Messi win not only he will be the best player from Argentina ppl are going to start say he is better than Pele too?

I don't know about that, but I will say that the debate between him and christiano will quickly end. It won't even be a debate anymore.

I told this to a friend today.

I can't stand Real Madrid fans and their yapping about who is better.

I don't even know why ppl compare the two.

They are two different type of players.

I agree that they are 2 different types but still think Messi is the better player....bias and all. But not trying to start that debate here right now.

Many Brazilians have been upset about the billions of dollars spent on new stadiums and other World Cup-related projects.
