~--~Official 2012 NBA Draft/Offseason Thread~--~

Speaking of Boston Larry Bird is supposedly leaving the Pacers organization. Bird was a good coach back when he was coaching Indiana. If Phil don't work out with OKC they could try Larry.

Bird inherited a lot of seasoned talent and had a pretty good assistant coach. Besides, his back is an issue. Wish him the best though.

How's this for a business story: CNBC's Darren Rovell reports that Anthony Davis, who will likely be the No. 1 pick at Thursday's NBA Draft, has gone and trademarked his unibrow. Earlier this month, his family also went and TM'd two pretty terrible, awfully punny phrases: "Raise the Brow" and "Fear the Brow." Marketing, etc., etc. Millions of dollars, probably. And we are, indeed, fearful. But maybe we had something to do with this: According to Davis, he made the unibrow official because "everyone’s talking about it."

Not a bad move on his part.

Fuck! I was hoping the Bulls would buy that pick from OKC.

The Bulls can still buy the Thunder's first round pick cause this involves a 2nd rounder in next year's draft.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/8099623/source-charlotte-bobcats-agree-trade-corey-maggette-2013-first-round-pick-detroit-pistons-ben-gordon

The Detroit Pistons have agreed to trade Ben Gordon and a 2013 protected first-round draft pick to the Charlotte Bobcats for swingman Corey Maggette.

Maggette

Gordon

Sources told ESPN.com the first-round pick going to Charlotte is lottery-protected in 2013, top-eight protected in 2014, top-one protected in 2015 and unprotected in 2016.

The deal provides significant long-term savings for the Pistons. Maggette is in the last year of his contract that pays him $10.9 million during the 2012-13 season.

Gordon has two years, $25.6 million left on his contract, giving the Pistons a long-term savings of $14 million.

For the Bobcats, they get a much needed shooter in their backcourt. In a recent interview after a pre-draft workout, new coach Mike Dunlap told reporters that was the team's biggest need.

"Definitely, shooters," Dunlap said. "The ability to make the 3(-pointer) is really important because it allows you to play inside. What happens (in the absence of quality shooting) is the defense collapses and it gets crowded in there.

"It's always nice to have guys who can shoot a basketball."

The Bobcats may not be done dealing. Sources say the team is looking at several other trade options, including trading the No. 2 pick in Thursday night's draft.

The Bobcats are looking to add multiple assets. The team has spoken with several teams, but their talks with the Cleveland Cavaliers have been the most substantive. The Cavs have the Nos. 4, 24, 33 and 34 picks in the draft. If Cleveland is willing to offer both No. 4 and No. 24, it might be able to get a deal done by draft night.

If the Bobcats keep the No. 2 pick, the addition of Gordon may end talk that they'll take Florida's Bradley Beal at No. 2. Beal, like Gordon, is an undersized sharpshooter. Kansas' Thomas Robinson and Kentucky's Michael Kidd-Gilchrist are also in the mix for the Bobcats at No. 2.

This trade won't change the draft focus of the Pistons, however. They are leaning strongly toward taking a big man with the No. 9 pick. UConn center Andre Drummond and North Carolina's John Henson are both getting strong consideration in Detroit, according to sources.

Exploring Heat's offseason options; Finals fallout; Best of worst said about Heat; Fins, Marlins

SUNDAY BUZZ COLUMN

The most pertinent question of this Heat offseason: What can $3.1 million get you? It landed Miami a pretty significant piece last December, with Shane Battier’s signing looking much smarter today than two months ago.

Beyond trades, the only avenues for the Heat to improve are the $3.1 million mini-mid level exception given to tax-paying teams, veteran’s minimum contracts topping $1 million and the 27th pick in Thursday’s draft.

If Mike Miller is ruled out for next season after back surgery (which remains to be seen), the Heat could apply for a $2.9 million disabled player's exception, as well. (Houston was awarded one for Yao Ming and Portland for Greg Oden in the past couple years.)

The Heat will be judicious with the exception because it will be at least $7 million over the luxury tax threshold, with the tax becoming more onerous in 2013-14. The hope would be to find a quality player – such as Steve Nash, Lamar Odom or Ray Allen – willing to settle for less to play here.

If Miller, who’s due $5.8 million next season, retires or is amnestied, the tax would be less of an immediate concern. A look at Miami’s options entering free agency July 1:

### Power rotation: Miami doesn’t have a strong chance of finding a center good enough to warrant moving Chris Bosh back to power forward, and the Heat is comfortable with keeping Bosh at center.

Perhaps the only affordable, somewhat appealing center option would be Kwame Brown, who got $7 million from Golden State last December but played just nine games before tearing his pectoral muscle while defending Udonis Haslem. He averaged 7.9 points and 6.8 rebounds for Charlotte two years ago and his price tag will be lower off injury.

The Heat is in no position to land free agents Kevin Garnett, Marcus Camby (insists he wants to stay in Houston), Tim Duncan (will stay with the Spurs), Chris Kaman or Spencer Hawes, or probably even Jordan Hill or Ian Mahinmi.

All that’s left are cheap backup types:Aaron Gray, Jermaine O'Neal, Jason Collins, Nazr Mohammed, Daniel Orton, Joel Pryzbilla, undersized Boris Diaw. None are better than what Miami already has.

Here’s a better option: Leave Bosh at center and add a rotation-worthy power forward to supplement Haslem and Battier, who proved he can play either forward spot.

Odom, 32, would be appealing if both he and the Mavericks agree to a buyout, as expected; he averaged 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds for the Lakers in 2010-11. Odom always has liked the Heat, even after being traded, but reportedly prefers a return to Los Angeles – with either the Clippers or the Lakers (who could not re-sign him until Dec. 11, per NBA rules). And it’s questionable if he would settle for $3 million.

Also worth exploring would be a $3.2 million bid to Cavaliers power forward Antawn Jamison (17.2 points, 6.3 rebounds), though he presumably will command more elsewhere, even at age 36.

If Odom or Jamison don’t materialize here (and the odds are against both), it would make sense to use the $3.2 million exception on a bench scorer who can back up Dwyane Wade or play with Wade at times - perhaps Allen or Jamal Crawford.

Under that scenario, Miami then could address the power rotation by adding a power forward at the veteran’s minimum from the likes of Reggie Evans, Shelden Williams and Kenyon Martin.

Forget the top restricted free agent big men: Roy Hibbert, Omer Asik, Javale McGee, Brook Lopez, Robin Lopez and Marreese Speights. All are out of Miami’s price range. The Heat is aware of Greg Oden’s interest, but he might sit out next season while getting healthy.

### Point guard: The Heat is expected to be among several teams that will at least place a call inquiring about Nash, who averaged 10.7 assists (second in the league) and led all NBA guards by shooting 53.2. Though Nash has publicly expressed interest in Miami, it would be surprising if he takes $3 million; the Suns reportedly plan to offer $10 million a year. A Canadian report Friday listed Phoenix, Portland and Toronto as front-runners.

“I’m considering everything at the moment,” Nash told Slam Magazine a week ago. “I would love to win a championship, yes. But I’m not one of those people who believe I must win one to have a fulfilling career. So other factors such as salary, family, playing time, and opportunity for team success also factor in.”

Unless Nash signs here, Miami likely would stick with Mario Chalmers starting and Norris Cole backing up, though several veterans will be available for modest money (Jason Kidd, Kirk Hinrich, Keyon Dooling, Derek Fisher). Deron Williams, Raymond Felton, Andre Miller and Goran Dragic are too expensive, and Chauncey Billups reportedly wants to stay with the Clippers.

### Small forwards or shooting guards: Guards Allen, 36, and Crawford, 32, reportedly have interest in Miami, but it’s debatable whether either - or Jason Terry, 34, or Grant Hill, 39, for that matter - would take the mini-mid level. Allen might be most likely of those four to accept $3 million. Don’t rule out Brandon Roy, who is 27, has a 19.9 career scoring average, and is planning a comeback after retiring before last season with knee problems.

The need for a bench scorer who can back up Wade will become even greater if Miller doesn’t return.

Other options: Gerald Green, Randy Foye, Mickael Pietrus, Marquis Daniels, Anthony Parker, Matt Barnes, Von Wafer and Michael Redd. Nick Young, Marco Belinelli and Carlos Delfino probably would be too pricey.

### Juwan Howard and Eddy Curry are the Heat’s free agents, and Terrel Harris is a restricted free agent. The Heat has a team option on Dexter Pittman. Ronny Turiaf must decide whether to exercise a $1.2 million player option.

2012 NBA Free Agency Rumors: 'General Consensus' Believes Ray Allen Will Sign With Miami Heat

NBA pundits have been talking about the possibility of Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen signing with the Miami Heat as a free agent before the finals were finished. Alex Kennedy from Hoopsworld was the latest to chime in on the Allen talk. Kennedy tweeted this late on Tuesday:

Alex Kennedy
@AlexKennedyNBA

The general consensus around the NBA is that Ray Allen will sign with Miami. "Barring a change, he'll join the Heat," said a league source.
26 Jun 12

Prior reports had the Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks as possible destinations as well. Those reports surfaced before Miami won the championship.

Allen is a five-time All-Star in the twilight of his career. He turns 37 in July. He averaged more than 14 points per game and 34 minutes of playing time. Both stats are a drop off from the year before, but he still proved to be an important part of a Boston team that took Miami to seven games in the playoffs this year.

The rich get richer once he signs. Now look at Thabeet for shot blocking, he is still a project but can be a great fit on the Heat on the cheap.

The Warriors offered #7 to Cleveland for Anderson Varejao and #24. The Cavaliers declined.

Rudy Gay would be a great look for Philly. He would be the go to guy there. Trade Iggy and Meeks for Rudy and Darrell Authur.

NBA Rumors: Lakers Want to Trade Pau Gasol, Metta World Peace for Draft Picks?

http://www.opposingviews.com/i/spor...trade-pau-gasol-metta-world-peace-draft-picks

Submitted by Alex Groberman on Jun 26, 2012

The Los Angeles Lakers could be gearing up to do something really crazy this week. How crazy? Metta World Peace-type crazy.

Heading into this summer, management made it clear from the outset that nobody was really safe. Sure, Kobe Bryant wasn’t going to get moved anywhere – but even that was more of a byproduct of Jim Buss not being able to move him than Jim Buss not wanting to move him.

Beyond Kobe, though, everyone was available. The obvious caveat there would seem to be management’s pet project, Andrew Bynum; however, he isn't as untouchable these days as he once was either.

So, given L.A.’s everyone is available mantra heading into the 2012 NBA Draft, naturally, some of the squad’s more marquee names have suddenly become the subject of trade rumors.

First up: the Lakers’ much-maligned power forward, Pau Gasol. According to Fox Sports, Gasol is apparently being dangled in front of the Washington Wizards for a deal that would net L.A. the No. 3 overall pick.

Back to the Lakers. If the Cavs are able to move up and nab Beal at No. 2, there’s talk the Lakers would be willing to make life easy for the Wizards and help them move out of the third spot. It would likely take power forward Pau Gasol. Far-fetched for now, but don’t be surprised if it’s something that’s explored in the right situation.

At which point the Lakers would presumably -- with Beal off the board -- take Thomas Robinson, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist or Harrison Barnes. Then again, maybe they could use the pick in a trade for Dwight Howard…

The other big move that Fox Sports discussed today would be slightly less impactful, but it would still shake things up quite a bit. Via Sam Amico:

The Lakers are exploring all kinds of potential deals, having floated every name on the roster this side of Kobe Bryant. They are said to be open to trading Metta World Peace for a late first-rounder, with their eyes on Baylor forward Quincy Miller and Kentucky point guard Marquis Teague.

The obvious question is: who would want Peace’s massive, bloated salary? Teams picking at the bottom of the draft are usually too smart for something like that.

So, what’s the likelihood that any of these deals go down before Thursday? Not great. Mostly because they don't make much sense for any of the parties involved. But if they’re acually just small, baby steps in order to make Orlando an offer for Dwight, then both rumors would suddenly make a lot more sense.

The rich get richer once he signs. Now look at Thabeet for shot blocking, he is still a project but can be a great fit on the Heat on the cheap.

If the HEat dont look to get some interior size, shotblocking and rebounding I am gonna look very very sideways at Pat

NBA Draft Rumors: Denver Nuggets Wil Chandler to G State for 7th pick.....

Draft Rumors: Denver Nuggets And Golden State Warriors Could Make A Deal

The Denver Nuggets have a lot of good young players with reasonable contracts so, not surprisingly, the team's phone is apparently ringing off the hook with trade offers before Thursday night's NBA Draft.

There are probably going to be quite a few new rumors posited over the next 36 hours, but one of the more interesting deals being discussed would be between the Nuggets and Golden State Warriors (via ESPN's Chris Broussard).

Chris Broussard
@Chris_Broussard

Lots of teams calling Denver to trade for Nuggets' young players. 1of several moves being discussed: Wil Chandler to G State for 7th pick
27 Jun 12

The above mentioned deal wouldn't work under the salary cap as is, but if Wilson Chandler was traded to Golden State for the No. 7 pick and Dorell Wright, this trade would be possible. That isn't quite as nice for the Warriors, but they're still likely going to be declared winners under that scenario.

Knicks should have never let chandler go. They should have traded Fields instead

NBA Trade Rumors: Bobcats Looking To Package Tyrus Thomas With No. 2 Pick

The Charlotte Bobcats have the second overall pick in Thursday night's NBA Draft and, considering Anthony Davis is going to New Orleans with the top selection, No. 2 is where things are expected to get exciting. Charlotte has quite a few positions of need, obviously, but the latest rumors indicate that they're willing to trade the pick.

Michael Jordan's team of experts have already made one trade this week, but the Washington Post is reporting that the Bobcats are interested in making more deals ... as long as they're able to package an underachieving Tyrus Thomas with their top pick, anyway.

According to multiple sources, the Bobcats are trying to convince teams interested in the second pick to also take back disappointing power forward Tyrus Thomas, who has more than $26 million remaining on his contract. Thomas is coming off the worst season since his rookie year as he averaged just 5.6 points and 3.7 rebounds.

When asked if teams would be willing to touch Thomas, one Western Conference executive said, "I don't think so."

Considering it sounds like that might not work out as well as the Bobcats brain trust is hoping, there's apparently one other option on the table the team is considering:
That about sums it up RT @Aykis16: Charlotte Bobcats seriously considering drafting Thomisson Kidd-Bealchrist with the #2 pick.
27 Jun 12

For those not familiar with this situation, it'd essentially be Michael Jordan finding the people in charge of creating the Monstars in Space Jam and then having them mix the talents of Thomas Robinson, Harrison Barnes, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Bradley Beal into one super player.

It's currently unclear whether the Bobcats have a better chance of convincing a team to take on Tyrus Thomas or creating Thomisson Kidd-Bealchrist in time for Thursday night's draft.

Its an upgrade over Jefferson and Chandler is 2-4 tweener defensively and he should be able to cover up some for their weakness defensivesly at the 2 and 4. hearing this and seeing how they wanted Deng it looks like they want someone who can help Lee at least defend and in theory Chandler should be able to help Thompson too.

Curry
Thompson
Chandler
Lee
Bogut

Jefferson
Rush
Biedrins
Robinson

That team should be able to get a sixth seed if they figure it out. Chandler on the low is a pretty good SF. The biggest mistake the knicks made in the Melo trade wasn't so much not keeping him (he was due $$$) as much as not signing him to a cheap extension when they had the chance and then keeping him in the Melo trade.

Report: Rockets Trade Dalembert To Milwaukee For No. 12 Pick, Three Bucks

The Houston Rockets can't stop dealing, and they won't stop dealing. They now hold hostage the 12, 16 and 18 picks in this year's draft. Don't believe me? Hear it from Woj:

Adrian Wojnarowski
✔
@WojYahooNBA

Dalembert and the 14th pick go the Bucks for the 12th pick, Jon Brockman, Jon Leurer and Brockman, sources tell Y!

Shaun Livingston also goes to the Rockets as part of the package, sources tell Y!

A few reactions:

1) Chandler Parsons and John Leuer are on the same roster. If you aren't sure who Leuer is, he is a Big 10 version of Chandler Parsons.

2) We got two Jon Brockmans. YOU HEARD ME. TWO JON BROCKMANS.

3) Shaun Livingston just about solves the backup point guard conundrum.

4) All four of these guys have expiring contracts. The more liquid, the better, I suppose.

You have to wonder if moving up two picks was worth trading Dalembert. Maybe Houston could have gotten more, but Morey is just in a ridiculous zone right now. I like the urgency, I like the "this is it" mentality that keeps hovering over these moves. I'm a fan for now, if only because I know this is certainly not the end of this.

Let me add this. The best part about these trades: since this is Daryl Morey, you know there is more to come from this trade. If this was David Kahn, well, this would be it and you'd hate your life.

Few Rumors:

Josh Smith for Pau Gasol

Lamar Odom to Clippers

Mo Williams to Lakers

Timberwolves are interested in Brandon Roy

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- David Kahn says the Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in signing Brandon Roy, who is seeking a comeback after knee injuries caused him to miss all of last season.

The three-time All-Star announced his retirement and was amnestied by Portland before last season began because of knee problems. After sitting out the lockout-shortened season, Roy wants to give it another try.

Kahn said on Wednesday that the Timberwolves were interested in signing him, but would not comment further. Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman has roots in Portland and assistant coach Bill Bayno knows Roy well after serving on the Blazers staff.

If healthy, Roy would give the Timberwolves the big shooting guard they sorely lack. Adelman played undersized Luke Ridnour at the position for much of last season.

The Warriors offered #7 to Cleveland for Anderson Varejao and #24. The Cavaliers declined.

 how do you pass that deal cavs could have the 4th & 7th pick

to put around Kyrie

Varejo has never played a whole season and hes 30

i hope that deal is not off the table

Kyrie Irving leaving when he is a free agent

Nobody want to fuck with Cleveland

Few Rumors:

Josh Smith for Pau Gasol

Lamar Odom to Clippers

Mo Williams to Lakers

Smith for Gasol is a downgrade for the Lakers

And that Odom to the Clippers thing will pick up some steam cuz the Lakers will take on Mo Williams in a 3 team deal with us

We get the extra 2.4 million off out books but what will we do with it cuz im not banking on Dwill :smh::hmm:
