~--~Official 2012 NBA Draft/Offseason Thread~--~

:smh: My ni99a Jeremy Lamb's stock is taking a hit due to injuries.

At this point I hope he falls to somewhere between 15-20. Dallas would be a good look for him.

Lamb isn't dropping to the Mavs. An injured ankle kept him from working out for the most part but he did work out for the Suns who pick 13th. And if they keep both of their picks I couldn't see him making it past the Rockets who are all about accumulating talent and tradeable assets.

I got a question.

What can a team do with a trade exception?

It's to my understanding you can't use it on a free agent.

Say a team has a 8 million dollar trade exception like the Lakers, what can they do with that?

You can make a trade without having to match salaries within 10 percent. Instead they can use the trade exemption to make up the difference. Thing is that trade exemptions are rarely used. Both the Raptors and Cavs picked them up when Bosh and James left and neither used them. The Bulls got one for Hakim Warrick and didn't use it.

I see him in Houston, too. I'm was just thinking wishfully when I said Dallas. There are shots available in Houston too. I see them getting either Dre Drummond or Hibbert which gives them a potential young core of:

Drummond/Hibbert
Peterson
Parsons
Lamb
Dragic

Lowry is on the block and I'm sure Kevin Martin is as well. When isn't he??

exactly
yall should go after jenkins as a miller replacement... from vandy

Jenkins is a pure shooter though I wouldn't be surprised to see the Heat go after some size on the interior.
I'm still hoping that the Bulls can get their hands on a 2nd pick so that they could possibly get either a replacement for Korver such as Jenkins or Lamb or a talented player that slips like Quincy Miller. And it would be nice if Barton could slip to 29 as well. But they do need to acquire additional picks.

I keep seeng the Heat should get a PG like Nash or Dre Miller. I just don't see a good PG working in Miami while Lebron and Wade is on the floor. Yes they improved on how to move w/o the ball.. but these guys NEED the ball in their hands majority of the time. Miami did two things this past season that kind of fucked with the whole "TEAM basketball" thing... (1) they won a championship without a real PG (2) they won a championship without a real center

With Lebron James, you don't need a PG. If he continues to work the post and distribute on the double teams like he did in game 5 of the finals, all they need is shooters. If Miller and Jones retire, grab Allen or Terry. I prefer Terry because he can run point a lil when James/Wade ain't on the floor, has better defense than Ray, and can put the ball on the floor consistently. Either player will hit a open 3.

And honestly, the Heat need a 9 point 9 rebound center more than anything. With Bosh being out for some of the playoffs, that shit was really exposed. The problem is finding a center that is athletic enough to fit in the Heat's defensive rotation. That's why Bosh at 5 worked really well this year.

Word is the Bulls are going after Brandon Roy.

I don't know how I'd feel about that. I need to see him in action first.

He went through just about the same thing CP3 went through and CP3 is still good. But Paul ain't have that cartilage problem

Dan Le Batard of The Miami Herald: Pat Riley likes the storm. Needs it. He is truly terrible at being satisfied. He doesn’t trust the calm. He wants the water rising and the kingdom on fire, and he’ll make it so even as everyone is floating and feeling safe, especially if everyone is floating and feeling safe. “I'm past Thursday night,” he says. “It is over. We’ve got the draft coming up.” So you aren’t like Wade, who has printed up Team No Sleep T-shirts while careening between South Florida parties? “I’m going to put out Sleep Management T-shirts,” Riley says. “We’ve got a championship in our back pocket. Just one. One of the things you don’t want to do after it is in your back pocket, you don’t want to start reminding everyone how you did it. That is the start of the team on the demise. I remember when we won in 1987, best year we ever had with the Lakers, Mychal Thompson was our Shane Battier. We won the championship, had a great night, celebrated, a really great night, and he was in the weight room at 7 a.m. the next morning. I remember that 25 years later. You don’t want to get too drunk with your success. You don't want to waste a lot of time telling everyone how you mastered it. Simply, euphorically, quietly, enjoy it. That is hard for the contemporary generation today to understand." Come on, Pat. You sound like an old man telling those partying kids to get the hell off your lawn. Let them enjoy it. “I will ... for a week,” he says.

House cleaning in Orlando

Josh Robbins and Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel: New Orlando Magic General Manager Rob Hennigan has started to reconfigure the franchise's basketball operations department. On Sunday, Hennigan fired Assistant General Manager Dave Twardzik and six scouts. In addition to Twardzik, regional scout Tom Conrad, international scout Rudy D'Amico, international scouting coordinator Sam Foggin, pro scout Bob Staak, regional scout Greg Stratton and NBA advance scout Al Walker were let go, team spokesman Joel Glass confirmed.

The Charlotte Bobcats are believed to be high on Barnes — keep in mind the Michael Jordan/North Carolina connection — but don’t want to take him second overall. That’s why so much speculation persists on the Cavs and Bobcats working a deal that would give the Cavaliers the No. 2 pick and access to anyone not named Anthony Davis, while the Bobcats would drop down two spots, still in position to take Barnes, and would presumably pick up the Cavs’ extra first-round pick (No. 24 overall). Off the court, Barnes is smooth and polished. He speaks well, seems thoughtful and appeared for media interviews at the combine wearing dress pants and a sweater while almost everyone else appeared in shorts and T-shirts. Barnes said he did it because this was a job interview and he was taking it seriously. Yet there is a narcissistic side to him as well, given his bizarre announcement to commit to North Carolina three years ago via Skype. The entire strange production was aired by ESPNU. Asked how he benefited from the extra year in college, Barnes said it helped him to mature.

As a Laker fan...I'll take Beasley, Dragic, Brown.

PG...Dragic

SG...Bitch ass Kobe

SF...Beasley

PF...Gasol

C...Bynum

Bench...Odom (come on home), Micheal Redd/Brandon Roy (gimme 10-15 minutes a night) , Blake, Shannon Brown, Hill (If he stays), Barnes (if he stays)

Sources: Wolves, Rockets OK trade
Updated: June 26, 2012, 10:31 AM ET

The Minnesota Timberwolves have agreed, pending league approval, to send the 18th pick in the 2012 NBA draft to the Houston Rockets for Chase Budinger and the draft rights to Lior Eliyahu, two league sources confirmed to ESPN.com.

The Houston Chronicle earlier reported the trade agreement.

The Rockets have been discussing deals with several teams in the top 10 about moving up in the draft. Adding the 18th pick should give them even more ammunition.

Although sources stressed that no deal is imminent, the Rockets have had substantive discussion about sending their other two first-round picks (No. 14 and No. 16) to the Sacramento Kings for the No. 5 pick. The Rockets have also been exploring moving point guard Kyle Lowry to a team in the top 10 to acquire another pick.

Sources say the Rockets are hoping to acquire enough assets to entice the Magic to trade Dwight Howard to them.

The Rockets' willingness to trade for Howard -- even without the All-Star center's signature on a contract extension -- is an open secret around the league. But it's believed that two top 10 picks, assuming Houston managed to complete trades with both Sacramento and another team, would seriously pique the interest of new Magic general manager Rob Hennigan, who could then quickly start following the same sort of roster-building blueprint relied on by his previous employers in Oklahoma City.

Acquiring those early lottery picks, though, only represents half of Houston's challenge if Howard is indeed the Rockets' target.

The other hurdle is convincing Hennigan, who hasn't even been on the job for a week, to part with Howard so quickly. As much as he's been schooled in building through the draft while working alongside Thunder GM Sam Presti, Hennigan could opt to take a more measured approach, make one more run at trying to convince Howard to sign an extension before entering the final year of his contract and then trade him later in the summer if those efforts go nowhere.

Bobcats eye trading No. 2 pick

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- New Charlotte coach Mike Dunlap says the idea of trading down from the No. 2 spot in the NBA draft to acquire extra picks "makes a lot of sense" for a young team like the Bobcats.

After finishing 7-59 and with the worst winning percentage (.106) in NBA history, the Bobcats have a variety of holes to fill this offseason.

Dunlap recognizes that.

That's one of the reasons he said the Bobcats are taking a "hybrid thinking" approach to Thursday night's draft, which means evaluating the talent available at No. 2 while simultaneously looking into the feasibility of moving down and picking up an additional first-round draft pick.

He said the option of trading down "is on the board."

"I think anybody in our situation would have that on the board," Dunlap said. "(Our) people are very smart up top. So options and thinking of your variables is a very smart thing to do."

Dunlap said the decision on whether to remain at No. 2 or move down will be up to his bosses -- general manager Rich Cho and director of basketball operations Rod Higgins. As of right now they're not talking about the draft, though both are expected to address the media at a pre-draft press conference Wednesday.

The New Orleans Hornets won the NBA lottery and have the No 1 pick.

It would be a major surprise if they don't take Kentucky's Anthony Davis, considered by many a franchise-type player.

The No. 2 pick is a bit more complicated.

There's no consensus pick for that spot with opinions varying on whether Kansas forward Thomas Robinson, Florida guard Bradley Beal, Kentucky swingman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist or North Carolina forward Harrison Barnes might be the next best player available.

Dunlap says the front office has "definitely reduced" the number of candidates in consideration for the No. 2 pick should the team stand pat.

"That's their job," Dunlap said of Cho and Higgins. "And I'm a resource. But those guys have done a wonderful job all year long of evaluation, so I think they have a clear idea of scenarios. There are many variables, but they have it down."

One intriguing potential trade partner for the Bobcats could be the Cleveland Cavaliers, who own picks No. 4 and 24.

If the Bobcats trade down it might allow them to acquire an outside shooter.

That's what Dunlap considers the team's most pressing need.

"The ability to make the three is important because it allows you to play inside the 3-point line," Dunlap said. "What happens is a defense collapses and it gets crowded in there. I would say that is safe to say that we need to do that. And we need to do a better job with our spacing, too. But as far as the roster goes it's always nice to have guys who can shoot a basketball."

The Bobcats worked out four players on Monday including Vanderbilt's John Jenkins, who fits the bill as an outside shooter after shooting 48.3 percent from beyond the arc last season.

Although he's not considered a top 10 pick, he could be an option for the Bobcats with their second round pick (31st overall). The others that worked out Monday in Charlotte were Missouri's Kim English, Virginia Tech's Dorenzo Hudson and High Point's Nick Barbour.

"I think it's a good draft and I also think there are a lot of guys out there that will be in that top 20 who have won a lot of basketball games," Dunlap said. "They kind of know the expectations. I also think you'll see a lot of wheeling and dealing with teams moving down or up."

While Dunlap could have some input on draft day decisions, his primary focus has been on developing the players he has on the roster.

He's dove head-first into the challenge.

Known as a no-nonsense coach, Dunlap spent more than two hours Monday working with a handful of Bobcats players including Byron Mullens and last year's rookie lottery picks Kemba Walker and Bismack Biyombo. The practice was fast-paced and intense in nature.

"Their work ethic and their willingness to learn has been good," he said. "I hope so, it's the honeymoon and there's nothing at stake right now."

Dunlap, who previously worked as an assistant at St. John's, has also been working on assembling an assistant coaching staff, although nothing is imminent.

"We're going to take our time," Dunlap said. "As they say in the business, hire slow, fire fast. I know that one."

YOur on the clock...

Throughout the offseason, there will be reports and whispers about players that the Celtics might be interested in. Each time a name bubbles up, we'll ask an ESPN Boston writer to react to the rumor. Next up: Chris Haynes of CSNNW is reporting that Boston has shown interest in Portland Trailblazers guard Jamal Crawford. Like a summer romance, could this love truly last?

From CSNNW: The Portland Trailblazers are fielding offers for guard Jamal Crawford and the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Boston Celtics are among the teams actively pursuing the scoring specialist intensely, a league source tells CSNNW.com.

ESPN Boston reaction: Crawford's always been an attractive player due to his flashy scoring ability, and the Celtics certainly wouldn't mind an accomplished scorer coming off of their bench -- someone who can fill up the stat sheet more consistently than the likes of Mickael Pietrus and Keyon Dooling did last season. But it's certainly a trade off, as Crawford has never been lauded for his efforts on the defensive end, and he's a very poor rebounder on top of that. What's more concerning is the drop-off in Crawford's shooting percentages last year. While he might have shot a career-high 92.7 percent from the free throw line, he shot a career-worst 30.8 percent from 3-point nation, and just 38.4 percent from the field overall, his worst mark since his rookie season back in 2000. All of this is to say that the Celtics should entertain the idea of adding the 32-year old Crawford, but perhaps shouldn't look to break the bank or hand away any significant players in order to acquire his services (he could be available via trade until June 28 and then signed as an unrestricted free agent after that). If the Celtics can get him for cheap (which is unlikely, given the other teams reportedly pursuing him), they should look to add him. If the asking price is too high, they should look elsewhere.

C's getting 2012 pick from OKC

The NBA has granted Boston a 2013 second-round pick from Oklahoma City in a dispute over Jeff Green's medical condition, sources confirmed to ESPN.

Yahoo! Sports had earlier reported the NBA's decision. The pick going to Boston is a pick the Thunder acquired from the Charlotte Bobcats in 2011 for Byron Mullens.

That's good news for the Celtics, considering the Bobcats set an NBA record for futility last season. Chances are, that pick is going to be in the low 30s overall.

The Celtics acquired Green in a 2011 trade that sent Kendrick Perkins to Oklahoma City. The deal also sent Nenad Krstic and a first-round pick (No. 22 overall in Thursday's draft via the Clippers) to Boston and Nate Robinson to the Thunder.

Kristic and Robinson are no longer with the Celtics and Thunder, respectively.

The Celtics withdrew a one-year, $9 million contract offer to Green after he failed a physical due to a heart ailment. He missed the entire 2011-12 season and had surgery to repair an aortic aneurysm in January.

He is an unrestricted free agent and his agent, David Falk, told Sports Illustrated earlier this month that he's had exploratory talks with "12 to 14 teams" regarding Green.

Doc has a feeling KG will be back

Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers expressed optimism on Tuesday morning that Kevin Garnett will return next season. He called it "positive thinking."

“I don’t know if Kevin is coming back but let’s just say yes. Positive thinking,” Rivers said.

He called it a gut feeling. "I have no basis for that, just how I feel," he told CSNNE.

Rivers appeared at a panel discussion held by the Positive Coaching Alliance panel at Fenway Park, along with Bobby Valentine and other New England coaches including Tommy Amaker of Harvard men's hoops and BC hockey coach Jerry York. He was asked about the status of KG and Ray Allen, who is reportedly interested in heading to Miami to the join the Heat.

On Allen, he said: "I can't talk about it yet," according to The Boston Globe. "He's a free agent. So, we'll see. That's what free agent means, it means you're free.

"Ray is still a Celtic as far as I'm concerned, so we'll see," he said.

Rivers told the Globe he hopes that both Allen and KG return. "We would absolutely love it. But all that would be dictated all the way up until July 1st," he said.

It's not expected that KG's plans will have any bearing on the Celtics' draft plans on Thursday, where they have picks No. 21 and 22.

"It's not like we have the No. 1 pick," Rivers told CSNNE. "When you're in the 20s, you just wait and see what comes to you. I think this is a great draft. Where we're picking, we'll be able to get two very good players."

Rivers said he'll be spending draft night at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., with his son, Austin, who is projected to be one of the first players selected. He wanted to be present to watch his son walk to the podium to greet NBA commissioner David Stern after his name is called.

"It'll be really cool; it'll be fun," Rivers said.

crawford should of went to NY last year instead of listening to his friends and joining that dysfunction in Portland. With Woodson there now he should really give NY a look.

Budinger for a top 20 draft pick??

“@MySportsLegion: Report: If Kings accept the deal, Rockets then plan to offer Orlando Tyreke Evans, Kevin Martin and picks #5 & 18 to the Magic for Dwight”

yea there's more to it.....wheeling and dealing

NBA Draft Rumors: Rockets, Kings May Be Discussing Trade Involving Kyle Lowry, Tyreke Evans, According To Report

Fresh off acquiring the No. 18 pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Houston Rockets have another big move on the horizon. The Rockets have reportedly offered a deal that would send Kyle Lowry and the No. 14 and No. 16 picks in the 2012 NBA Draft to the Sacramento Kings for Tyreke Evans and the No. 5 pick, according to Draft Express' Jonathan Givony.

However, Sports Illustrated's Sam Amick reports that the trade offer never happened.

The Rockets continue to look to assemble assets in a trade package for Dwight Howard, and if this offer was indeed on the table, it would provide them with two strong assets in Evans and the No. 5 pick. Evans has fallen out of favor with the Kings after struggling with a move to small forward, but he is only two years removed from winning the rookie of the year award in a landslide. The Rockets could use Evans and the No. 5 pick as their top assets in a Howard trade, or they could keep them.

The Kings, meanwhile, would acquire Lowry, one of the league's top bargains, if they make this deal. Lowry was in the running for an All-Star berth before suffering a midseason illness, and he has a very friendly contract ($5.7 million next year, $6.2 million, but only $1 million guaranteed, in 2013-14). Lowry would play alongside promising rookie Isaiah Thomas and shooting guard Marcus Thornton. The Kings also would be able to take on two draft picks in a deep draft.

It remains to be seen if this proposal goes through. Stay tuned.

Amare Stoudemire fined $50K

ESPN.com news services

The NBA fined Amare Stoudemire $50,000 for his use of a gay slur in a Twitter message, the league announced Tuesday.

The New York Knicks forward apologized to a fan on Sunday for using a gay slur in response to a crude tweet in which the fan admonished the All-Star to "make up for this past season."

The fan tweeted his comment on Saturday and received a direct message containing an expletive and the slur from the account Twitter verifies as Stoudemire's. The fan posted a screen shot of the direct message. Direct messages can only be seen by the sender and the recipient.

Stoudemire apologized early Sunday, using another direct message that the fan posted as a screen shot, saying "I apologize for what I said earlier. I just got off the plane and had time to think about it. Sorry bro!! No Excuses. Won't happen again.

How's this for a business story: CNBC's Darren Rovell reports that Anthony Davis, who will likely be the No. 1 pick at Thursday's NBA Draft, has gone and trademarked his unibrow. Earlier this month, his family also went and TM'd two pretty terrible, awfully punny phrases: "Raise the Brow" and "Fear the Brow." Marketing, etc., etc. Millions of dollars, probably. And we are, indeed, fearful. But maybe we had something to do with this: According to Davis, he made the unibrow official because "everyone’s talking about it."

Fuck! I was hoping the Bulls would buy that pick from OKC.

Speaking of Boston Larry Bird is supposedly leaving the Pacers organization. Bird was a good coach back when he was coaching Indiana. If Phil don't work out with OKC they could try Larry.
