Obama shuts down White House heckler: 'You're in my house!'
It's his house while he's president. Go President Obama!
President Obama normally lets hecklers speak, but this time, he put his foot down: "OK, you know what? No, no, no..."
A heckler who interrupted a speech by Barack Obama has received a sharp rebuke from the US President himself.
The protester, identified by guests as Jennicet Gutiérrez, was overheard calling out as Mr Obama spoke at a White House event honouring LGBT Pride Month today.
"Shame on you," he told his heckler, who was protesting deportations under the current federal government administration. "Listen, you're in my house … it's not respectful."
Gutiérrez, an undocumented transgender immigrant, persisted and was eventually escorted from the room.
"As a general rule I am just fine with a few hecklers. But not when I'm up here in the house," Obama continued, as Vice President Joe Biden gave him a slap of support on the back.
He later added if guests were happy to "eat the hors d'oeuvres and drink the booze", the least they could do was limit interuptions.
According to a press release issued by immigration activists, Gutiérrez is a founding member of FAMILIA TQLM, established to advocate for LGBTQ immigrants who the group says are often excluded in the immigration debate. Gutiérrez is not the first heckler to be promptly shut down by the president, with Mr Obama responding similarly during speeches at the White House in 2012 and in San Francisco in 2013.
