(CNN) – Barack Obama has personally apologized to a Michigan television reporter for referring to her as "sweetie" as she tried to ask a question.
The comment came earlier Wednesday when WXYZ reporter Peggy Agar asked Obama at a campaign stop, “How are you going to help the American auto workers?”

Obama told Agar to "hold on, sweetie," and said he would address that issue with her later. Agar said she never got an answer to her question.

According to WXYZ, Obama personally left a voice message for Agar Wednesday afternoon, apologizing for both not answering the question and for calling her "sweetie."

"That's a bad habit of mine," Obama said in the message. "I do it sometimes with all kinds of people. I mean no disrespect and so I am duly chastened on that front.

"Feel free to call me back. I expect that my press team will be happy to try to make it up to you whenever we are in Detroit next," he added.
Obama also took some heat in Pennsylvania last month for referring to a factory worker as "sweetie."

It's strange but I use "sweetie" and "hon" all the time with people. It's something I developed living in the south. I've slipped with co-workers but they've shrugged it off. Is this really a big deal?

i guarantee that white yamp has been called 10x worse by her co-workers and co-crackas, but now she's so offended. :hmm:

I see they're gonna make a big deal out of everything. Of all of those southern politicians, I bet most of them have called a reporter or 2 "sweetie"

:smh: Apologizing for calling a woman 'sweetie'? I've never known that to be a derogatory term  This is going to be one loooooong battle for the White House. I can see apologizing for not answering the question, but calling her sweetie?

It must be a professionalism thing. But if that's the case...they need to go over McCain's records and make him apologize for all of his 'slip ups'. That would include his anger outburst a few months back.

Gat damn. What the F*** is he apologizing for?!?!?

* Saying "bitter"
* Saying lives were "wasted" in Iraq (when they were)
* Saying "sweetie" to a woman - not: "What whore" or "Yeah, B****?

GTFO man. I am getting tired of him caving on stupid S***. Obama needs to man the F*** up and stop acting like a real democratic candidate (in the passive and weak sense of the perception). It's like he is trying to "Kerry" himself out of looking masculine even if it kills him. Damn....

Calling her sweetie is kind of, in a way, talking down to her, like she's a child, like he's more intelligent than her. A childs term.

It's certainly rude and condescending to use that sort of language in public with a professional woman (whom you don't even know). He should know better. He just put an exclamation point on the reason why women (including black ones) can't ever totally trust male representation in political office.

What if a reporter called him "boy" or "homey" just because they use that language with their friends? No one would find that sort of unearned familiarity acceptable. It would be deemed insulting, regardless of context and eventual apology.

So someone has to be a "cracker" because they have a different opinion? All of us have our opinions based on our experiences and the way we were raised. To some it was no biggie, to others it was disrespectful.

look, don't start with me. you take your nigga-hating crusade elsewhere.

i remember when i called a lady "darkie" online and there was some uproar. coming
from trinidad its a compliment for a nice looking dark skinned lady. for some it may
be nothing, it may be a positive or it may be a negative.

if it was up to me your white ass would be dead in a pool of your childrens blood.

 great cracka rationalization right there.

Calling a professional "sweetie" makes for a pretty condescending tone. Might as well said don't worry your pretty little head over it. I mean really, anyone who takes offense is being a little sensitive, but when you're running for president, everything you say is gonna get amplified and read too far into.

And is calling me white suppose to be some kind of insult? I mean, I don't think there is a single white person on the planet who gets insulted by the term "cracka" no matter the situation.

you are definately a woman.

I'm not (obviously), but why would it matter in this case? Are men too stupid to comprehend insults and condescension?

Apparently, you think that calling me a "woman" is supposed to hurt my feelings. Why, kid? Do you think women are inferior to men?

i've never heard of anyone being offended over being called "sweetie" until now. it would be a whole different thing if he said "sugar tush" or "dollface". this shit is cracka's reaching for anything that will make headlines, and i'm not co-signing it. sure, he could have used a better term, but when you see the vid, he was already in a convo with someone else and this rude bitch, attempts to interupt him in midsentence. he tried to tell that bitch, "i'll answer your questions during the predetermined Q&A session", but somehow this gets turned into a issue over "sweetie". please. that bitch is just trying to make a name for herself.

Dude uses the word "BITCH" to defend "sweetie." Once again proving the point that women still have a harder road to travel in public life than black males do.

Basically, there are just way too many immature Obama supporters out there who are NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME. Big embarrassments to the campaign, and Obama's (unexpected) sexist rudeness only served to fuel their ingrained ignorance and anti-female hostility. :smh:

you are obviously a homosexual.

I'm from the south and I have to admit that the term "sweetie" is a part of my lexicon. I use it as a term of endearment but I also know that, in some circles, it can be understood/taken to be derogatory or condescending -- so I tend not to use it with strangers.

Obama did the right thing: apologize and quickly, move on. Resist it and you risk turning a mole into a mountain.

I don't like the phrase myself. It can be taken as a form of condescension, and by him not replying to her question, I'm sure that is how she took it...

I personally feel this shouldn't be an issue that a presidential hopeful should be having to make personal phone calls about, but he has to stir his honey the best way possible...

Seems to me since she never got the answer to her question being called sweetie felt like a dismissive slight. If he had later addressed her Q perhaps she would not have had a problem with it. But she felt diminished by being called sweetie and not getting her question answered.

He was correct to apologize. His bad.

ETA: wow I'm in SOL.. I didn't even notice that when I entered the thread lol

I can guarentee you there are a million women out there, who if you were there co-worker, and you called them "sweetie", they would take offense. You said it yourself, he may have used a casual tone, but his words themselves were condescending.

I don't think it's a big deal, but then again, I'm not a woman in whatever field this chick is. That's what you get with these feminist types.

i'm just saying, this chick is reaching. i 'd like to hear what mcstoopid would have said if he was interrupted in the middle of convo. with his old ass, he might have called her "sweetcheeks".

co-sign. Gotta know your words will be examined every which way when you're on ANY job interview, esp running for president.

If he did this with Rev Wright, he'd be the nominee by now.

Oh goodie, another thing for racist commentators to spend a week of media time spinning out of control...

Poor baby. He meant no harm. Though I do understand why it could be taken offensive. He's having a really hard time. and he handles it really well which is why I respect him. (well its partly why)
