First it was a punk ass CAC transit cop, now this. I swear I used to have about 30% respect for some cops now it's dwindling to 0%.
After Oscar Grant shooting, police kill again in Oakland. Derrick Jones, 37, dies in shooting.
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Nov. 9, on the heels of the Oscar Grant shooting by BART police officer Johannes Mehserle, another African American has been shot in Oakland.
The reports from the police and the statements from Oakland witnesses, however, are in direct conflict.
Police reported that Derrick Jones, age 37, was trying to kill a woman and police discharged their firearms in an attempt to save her. Jones was killed in the shooting.
Witnesses report, however, that it was Jones who was being attacked by the woman while he was in the barbershop he owned.
“She was up in his barber shop and would not come out, tearing up his shop, hitting him with a cane, doing all this and he kept trying to avoid the situation,” stated Oakland resident Ronald Mack.
The incident then moved to the nearby laudromat.
Oakland Police Department Deputy Chief Jeff Israel told reporters, referring to Derrick Jones: “This man choked her, and struck her, and slammed her head repeatedly.”
When Jones was asked by police if he was indeed Derrick Jones, he denied that it was him and took off running.
“During the foot chase, the suspect was seen grabbing toward his waistband and this occurred several times,” stated Deputy Chief Israel. “At one point the officer did see a metal object in the man’s hand.”
Police continually called for Jones to put his hands up but Jones kept putting his hands to his waistband. The officers feared for their lives and shot at the victim.
Police say that Derrick Jones had been arrested previously for possession of guns, drugs, domestic violence and for resisting arrest.
Jones had a daughter.
Tonya Saheli, sister of the deceased man, said she believed her brother’s shooting was murder. “[It was] murder and we will prove that,” she said.
The shooting of Derrick Jones follows on the heels of the Oscar Grant killing which led to the sentencing of Johannes Mehserle, the BART police officer who shot Grant when he meant to use his Taser on him.
Mehserle was given 2 years with time served to be deducted from the sentence. That sentence caused riots in Oakland this week with 152 people being arrested.
Many are saying the shooting of Derrick Jones was unjustified and, in light of recent events, quite unbelievable.
“Never in a trillion years would I have imagined I would be on the other end,” stated Saheli. “I kept saying you know they need to sue police for wrongful death, I just kept saying wrongful death and here we are.”
“We haven’t even gotten over Grant and here we go again,” stated Samuel Jones, the uncle of Derrick Jones.
Attorney John Burris, the man who represents Oscar Grant's family in the BART shooting case, says he is now in discussions with the family of Derrick Jones.
