NYU organic chemistry professor is fired after 82 WOKE students sign petition to get rid of him for making the subject 'too hard'

Unfortunately, this is indicative of the state of US education and the children/ students of the aforementioned.

Orgo is hard. That's it. It is not supposed to be easy. You either know and understand concepts like hydrogenation breaking double bonds or you dont. There is no "i kinda of got it right. "

Additionally, if you are not showing up for class and/ or not utilizing the resources to help you get better grades, that's on you.

Reading the article, I tend to be on the cac's side. Dude doesn't even want his job back and it doesn't bode well for NYU in attracting top professors to the school. 82 out of 350 kids caused this? How about not renewing his contract after the year since he was on a yearly contract?

The “woke” in the title isn’t right OP.

Yes, student fragility has increased. Covid pandemic has fucked up the education system at every level.

A lot of NYU students have been grinding away since 8/9 grade to be a “competitive” applicant. Personally, I hate the stress put that’s put on students for college preparation. (Think of some sports.Kids will play 2-3 times more events and year round than they would on the college level…a lot of kids face the same stress in education, they do crazy amounts of work and activities OR if rich, rich family tries to buy in).

either way, typically a university wouldn’t do it like that to fire a prof. There is more to this situation than what’s publicly known. For all we know, department chair could’ve called him in to discuss surveys and asked the prof to be easier. Prof could’ve said that’s bullshit and here’s why. Dept chair’s ego was bruised so the firing.

My exact thoughts!
Instead of taking responsibility for their bad results, they're looking for a scapegoat. Orgo is a famous weed-out class for pre-meds.
These woke students have no shame.

When some of us were students we wouldn't dare make any demands of our profs; now it's a laundry list from these sensitive woke brigades on campuses.

And the university administrations are entirely focused on pleasing their "paying customers".

Exactly! I bet you one of the 85 was the child of a wealthy donor

Some of these muthafuckas intentionally make certain subjects hard. When I went to Xavier in the early 90s chances are you were going to take pre-calculus and calculus 3 times and drop that shit before finally passing, quantitative analysis and statistics. 9 chances out of 10 it was a hard to understand foreigner teaching that shit. So I applaud this generation for not taking that bullshit.

Thats why they are weeder class. It maintains scarcity in the field while also maintaining its elite status.

Cheical engineering and Medicine get to maintain their pay because of orgo weeding out a bunch of would bes.

Valid point because this is definitely a requirement for medical school. Always has and always will be.

NYU STUDENTS?

Probably Overly-Entitled/Spoiled, and Privileged WHITE (and I'm sure some Asian) kids who couldn't hack it.
I bet many of their Rich Parents put in numerous calls to Faculty too.
I deal with a lot of them practically every day at my job.
As well as various Staff from that University.
From Janitorial to Professors.

Man.
The stories I hear about these NYU Students...

I can see both sides.

Yes, kids don't focus these days and they should learn no matter how hard it is.

But as a school, you have a reputation to get kids into other programs. Your class can be hard but you every class needs a curve for passing. You need a high tier, middle tier, and lower tier, and graded amongst your peers, not the material. Otherwise, no one would want to go to the school and spend money on a degree that says they are smart and can be 100,000 in debt.

intellectually fragile woke ass students of 2022:smh::smh::smh:

Man WTF? Organic chemistry has always been hard, but get a fucking tutor like most students.

They asses better be glad they not taking Physical Chemistry.

When I took orgo at BU it was ridiculously hard due the grading system.

Didn’t matter if you got an 80 or a 40, bc it was based on how you did relative to everyone else.

You leave the exam and it’s impossible to know what grade you got, whether you felt you knew everything or not.

I remember getting an 84 and it being a C, and getting in the 40’s and it ended up being a B.

Talk about stress man and the competitive environment that it creates.…..that shi+ ain’t right.

“Hey can I see the notes for that last thing he said,”……….”Nope”:lol::lol:

Carry on…….

Damn

I got friends and family who work at the college and hospital

Didn't realize it was THAT bad

Seems like he's just a shitty teacher.

Why wouldn't he offer Zoom classes to people suffering with covid? NYU has more than enough resources to make this happen.

Instead he would rather have the students choose between failing and infecting other classmates. That creates a dangerous environment, especially when you go down from three midterms to two.

Also, this isn't about the course being "too hard". The problem is that it's not appropriate for the grade level. For instance, you could be the most brilliant mathematician in the world, but that still doesn't make it appropriate for you to expect third graders to learn calculus.

I don't know anything about organic chemistry, but when when more than 25% of your students are signing this petition then you have a serious problem Especially since it doesn't even include the people who have already dropped out!

When a student spends tens of thousands of borrowed dollars on an education it's not supposed to be easy, but it's not supposed to be impossible either.

I had a logic professor who was over the top hard, back then I'd get at least a B+ without studying but in his class I got a F and a D while studying my ass off, then I complained to him saying I don't get it. But he told me to hand in and stick with it, eventually I got a C then a B then a B+ A and a A+ and he gave me a A+ in the class. Once I accepted his teachings my thinking had changed and I looked at life totally different.
Later on during an ceremony, that same professor spoke to the students, and 20 of them stood up in protest due to him being too tough, but me and at least ten other guys looked at each other like those dumb motherfuckers are tripping.

What folks in America fail to understand what we cal difficult is normal in countries like Japan, India and parts of Africa, and if you don't get off your ass to get your game up, those motherfuckers from west bubble fuck will get the plush jobs.

This is a good point.

I think this is click bait...He might have been one of those fucked up ass professors that don't teach shit and test on shit untaught

My daughter complained about a professor like that .

And she has always been an excellent student.

graduated with latin honors and got her MBA by 23.

Because they try and take advantage of it and start making excuses why they can’t attend class. Some of legit, but honestly no professor got time weeding through truth and lies.

I tell my students day one I don’t do zoom even if they are sick. They have to be responsible learning the material on their own if they are unable to come to class.

When I offered zoom one semester, my classes got smaller and I got a bunch of excuses on why they can’t attend class. Some not wanting to come because it’s raining or some other bullshit they can think of.

That professor probably have zero connection with a generation that young. If he hasn’t adapted his teaching to to mesh with the times, then those students will have a problem.

Some professors are just stubborn as hell. Don’t want to change or adapt. Hell, I work with mofos like that. They ask me how do I do it and I tell them that I don’t give a shit. Lol.

Right? Will Hunting says it sucks to suck. He can do an O-Chem paper in less than an hour
