Verizon gets approval to make it harder for customers to leave

Verizon now has the freedom to pull a lever that will make it more difficult for customers to switch phone carriers.

In May, Verizon sent a request to the Federal Communications Commission to waive a rule that required it to automatically unlock a phone it sells to a customer after 60 days. This requirement was first established after Verizon purchased licenses to use 700MHz spectrum in 2008 and was reaffirmed when it acquired TracFone in 2021.

In the FCC filing, Verizon argued that devices should be locked for longer than 60 days, as the current rule it has to adhere to contributes to fraud, enabling device “trafficking.”

“Recent industry experience shows that even a lock of 60 days does not deter device fraud — a huge and growing problem in the United States — and instead enables trafficking in devices that are illicitly sent to foreign marketplaces,” said Verizon in the request. “This is why the industry standard for providers not subject to the Unlocking Rule is a minimum of 6 months or longer.”

Verizon also said that unlocking phones after 60 days makes devices less affordable for low-income customers...

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Multiple telecommunications services went down in the U.S. on Wednesday.

Customers from Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T and U.S. Cellular experienced outages, according to Downdetector.

More Local News
On Downdetector, over 181,000 reports were filed for Verizon customers. Nearly 4,000 reports were received for AT&T, U.S. Cellular, and T-Mobile combined.

The Verizon Outage Map on Downdetector showed New York City as a hotspot for the outages, along with Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Verizon users around the country reported that their devices were stuck on “SOS” mode.

When a phone can’t connect to the network, it may show “SOS” or “Emergency SOS” instead of any bars of signal.

How to get out of SOS mode

If your phone is in “SOS” mode, you won’t be able to make normal calls, but you should still be able to dial 911. The call will be connected through another network or a satellite provider.

To get your phone back online, you have another option: connect to Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi calling is a built-in feature on most Android devices and iPhones and can be turned on under the phone’s settings.

If you’re not able to connect to Wi-Fi, some apps, including Google Maps, have limited service offline. Payment apps also do not use a phone’s cell service to work and should also be functional even in “SOS” mode.

You may also want to try reconnecting to the network to see if issues have resolved. Apple advises turning on Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, then turning it off, to see if your device will reconnect.

What providers are saying about the outage

Verizon support answered customers on social media with the following statement:

“We are aware of the outages impacting our customers and are working diligently to resolve this and get all of our customers reliable service again.”

Over 450 reports of outages were filed for Verizon Fios customers as well.

T-Mobile said its network is “operating normally” in a statement sent to PIX11 News. “However, due to Verizon’s reported outage, our customers may not be able to reach someone with Verizon service at this time.”

An AT&T spokesperson said their network is functioning as well.

Both T-Mobile and AT&T pointed to Verizon’s outage as the reason for their customers believing their networks were down.

Verizon outage affects NYC

The Office of Emergency Management said it is “aware of the situation” in a social media post.

“We are working closely with our partners at OTI & various utility providers to assess any potential effects on city agencies & essential services,” the OEM said.

A nationwide Verizon Wireless outage was finally resolved on Wednesday night after tens of thousands of phones were knocked into SOS mode and fuming customers were stuck without service for over 12 hours.

“The outage has been resolved. If customers are still having an issue, we encourage them to restart their devices to reconnect to the network,” Verizon posted in a statement on social media around 10:20 p.m.

“For those affected, we will provide account credits. Details will be shared directly with customers. We sincerely apologize for the disruption,” the statement continued.

The outage triggered over 175,000 outage reports nationwide on Downdetector at its peak. Spotiness in coverage began as early as 9 a.m. ET for some customers and the issue gained widespread attention on social media around noon.

Furious customers from coast to coast complained their phones were left stuck in SOS mode with calls failing to connect and no bars of service.

An hour before the outage was resolved, the nation’s largest wireless carrier copped to letting its customers down.

“Today, we let many of our customers down and for that, we are truly sorry. They expect more from us. We are working non-stop and making progress,” Verizon wrote on X.

The carrier also vowed to “make this right” and offer account credits to customers affected by the massive outage. Verizon said details on the credits will be shared directly with customers.

Republican New York State Assembly member Anil Beephan, Jr. announced on Wednesday that he had asked the Federal Communications Commission to look into “the repeated Verizon wireless outages that have occurred over the past year,” which have posed a “serious threat” to public safety.

The outage “had a significant and unacceptable impact on public safety, including disruptions to reliable access to emergency communications and critical response systems,” Beephan wrote in a letter to FCC chairman Brendan Carr.

“In addition to public safety risks, these outages have caused substantial and ongoing inconveniences to residents, businesses, and local institutions, many of whom rely on wireless service for employment, healthcare access, education, and daily operations,” he continued.

In an earlier statement, the FCC said it is “aware of today’s wireless outages impacting some Verizon customers.”

“We are continuing to monitor the situation,” the FCC wrote on X.

Likely culprit in massive Verizon outage revealed: report

Federal and local officials investigating Verizon’s massive outage are increasingly pointing to a suspected server failure in New Jersey as the company definitively ruled out a cyberattack.

The telecoms giant was apologetic late Wednesday after hourslong disruptions knocked phones offline nationwide and even interfered with some 911 calls.

A company spokesperson told The Post on Thursday morning that a “software issue” was to blame.

The outage, which began Wednesday afternoon and dragged into the late hours, triggered a flood of complaints from coast to coast as Verizon customers reported phones stuck in SOS mode, dropped calls and dead mobile data.

Multiple law enforcement agencies examined whether the breakdown could have been the result of a cyberattack, but that scenario was ultimately ruled out, with officials believing the failure stemmed from an internal network issue tied to servers in New Jersey, according to reports cited by ABC News.

More than 178,000 Verizon customers were affected, according to Downdetector, with the heaviest concentration of reports coming from New York City, Atlanta, Charlotte and Houston.

By midafternoon Wednesday, reports had fallen below 60,000 as service gradually returned.

Customers took to the internet to vent their anger as they described losing service for much of the day.

Some Verizon subscribers saw brief restorations before their phones dropped back into SOS mode while others complained they couldn’t work, place calls or reliably reach family members.

The outage grew serious enough that New York City Emergency Management warned residents that some Verizon users were unable to reach 911 and advised calling from another carrier, using a landline or going directly to a police precinct or fire station.

By late Wednesday, Verizon said the issue had been resolved after engineers worked through the night to restore service across the network.

“This was a software issue, not a cyber event, and we are conducting a full review of what happened,” a Verizon spokesperson told The Post.

“Yesterday, we did not meet the standard of excellence our customers expect and that we expect of ourselves.”

Verizon said it will give customers a $20 account credit that can be redeemed through the myVerizon app.

“On average, this covers multiple days of service. Our business customers will be contacted directly about their credits,” the company rep told The Post.

“This credit isn’t meant to make up for what happened — no credit really can — but it’s a way of acknowledging our customers’ time and showing that this matters to us,” the spokesperson added.

“We are sorry for what our customers experienced and will continue to work hard day and night to provide the outstanding network and service that people expect from Verizon.”
