A beloved Brooklyn wine store clerk was gunned down Thursday night when he tried to protect his girlfriend, who was being robbed of her jewelry at gunpoint, police and witnesses said.

Yoseph Robinson, 34, took slugs in the chest and arm and died behind the counter of MB Vineyards, a kosher liquor store in Midwood, police said.

"The girl came running out screaming, and I saw him on the floor. She said, 'They shot Yoseph!' said a witness who identified himself as Daniel. "She was with him as he was dying. ... He told her, 'Tell my daughter I love her.'"

A holdup man entered the Nostrand Ave. store about 9:30 p.m. and went after the young woman - identified by friends as Lahava - but were confronted by Robinson, police said.

Friends said Lahava, who was helping Robinson write a book, told them she was joking around and laughing with him when the thug demanded her bling.

Robinson yelled, "Leave her alone" and approached the man. A struggle broke out, and he was shot, said Daniel, recounting Lahava's harrowing tale.

"Yoseph saved me," a badly shaken and weeping Lahava told friends outside the store.

The owner of an adjoining shop said, "I heard screaming, yelling and then the shots."

Robinson was working late because the store remains open till 11 p.m. on Thursdays, the day before the Sabbath. It usually closes at 9:30 p.m., friends said.

Samuel Kauffman, 43, wasn't suprised at Robinson's heroics.

"He would always tell people to be morally strong. He was a role model to all the kids in the neighborhood. He was very spirtual. He inspired all of us."

The bandit fled the shop on foot, and it was unclear if he made off with the jewelry, police said.

More than 50 people from the surrounding Jewish community quickly gathered at the store to mourn Robinson, a popular figure in the neighborhood who had come to the U.S. from Jamaica and recently converted to Judaism.

Robinson, who took lyrics from the Torah and turned them into reggae songs, came to Brooklyn a few years ago after a drug problem short-circuited his music career in Los Angeles.

Robinson wore traditional Orthodox garb in the store and enjoyed telling customers about his "spiritual transformation from drug user and party guy to religious Jew and the book he was writing about the experience," a friend said.

"He was a kind and generous man who talked to all of us. He gave us so much. You had to stop at the store just to hear his stories. He was truly an amazing man," said Tzvi Freund, 25.

The woman who witnessed the tragic death of a brave Brooklyn liquor store clerk said Friday it was "like a horror movie."

Lahavah Wallace spoke out as cops offered a $12,000 reward for information about the masked gunman who blew away Yoseph Robinson - and released video footage showing the clerk trying to disarm the intruder.

"It was totally within character of Yoseph Robinson," said Wallace, who called her dead boyfriend a "hero." "That's who he was."

Wallace said she began dating Wallace - a 34-year-old former hip hop mogul turned Orthodox-Jewish convert - about a month ago. She said she arrived at the MB Vineyards store on Nostrand Ave. around 6 p.m. Thursday.

"We were in the store goofing off on Facebook on the store computer," she said.

Robinson's cousin, Shamar, was also in the store, she said.

Then, around 9:30 p.m., a "short pip-squeak punk" barged into the store.

"This guy walks in and points the gun at me and says, 'Give me the jewelry,'" she said. "He pointed it at Yoseph and asked him for his money."

Wallace said she was taking off her sapphire bracelet when Robinson suddenly lunged across the counter for "the gun and the guy's wrist."

"He told me to go," she said. "It was a struggle. Yoseph was trying to get the gun. I ran to the back with his cousin, Shamar. When I was running I heard the shots."

Moments later Robinson was "lying on the floor," she said.

"He was struggling to breath and trying to raise his head," she said. "I screamed. I grabbed his hand."

Wallace said she's convinced she would have died had Robinson not interceded.

"I don't know what he would have done to me," she said of the gunman.

Robinson, who dressed in the garb of an observant Orthodox Jew, had given her grief about her jewelry the night before, she said.

"He told me I looked like Mr. T with all my jewelry," she said. "I told him I felt naked without it."

The man who cops think is tied to the slaying of Yoseph Robinson tried to make a run for it when he was briefly left alone and unhandcuffed in an interrogation room at the 70th Precinct stationhouse.

Cops quickly corralled the possible suspect, and the man, who has not been charged in Robinson's murder, busted his head in the scuffle.

Police had received several tips that the man held up the MB Vineyards liquor store in Midwood last Thursday and then shot Robinson, who was trying to defend his girlfriend.

Investigators unearthed a license plate for the possible suspect's car, the sources said. Detectives tracked it down, watched it until the owner arrived before dawn and took him into custody.

The man has not confessed and investigators do not have enough evidence to charge him, the sources said.

He was wanted on an unrelated assault warrant and is expected to face charges in that case.

The robber who held up the liquor store was wearing a mask, making it more difficult to positively identify him, the sources said.

The gunman pointed his revolver at the head of Lahavah Wallace, Robinson's girlfriend. That prompted the clerk to desperately reach for the weapon - only to be fatally shot himself.

The Jamaican-born Robinson left a hip-hop career and turned away from a troubled past to convert to Judaism.

A beloved Brooklyn liquor store clerk gunned down last week knew the ex-con accused of killing him.

Eion Klass, charged with the murder on Wednesday, used to smoke cigarettes with Yoseph Robinson and lived just three doors down from the crime scene. "He liked Yoseph," said Emre Erkan, the super of the building on Nostrand Ave. where Klass lived with his girlfriend.

Abraham Silverberg, 45, of Brooklyn, said the shooter used to come into the liquor store where Robinson worked every Thursday night for winetasting.

"We're so shocked. We can't believe this is the same man," Silverberg said.

Klass was a desperate man, said Joseph Walcott, 38, who saw Klass before the shooting.

"He was going through some things," Walcott said. "He said he needed money. I saw him downstairs smoking, looking real stressed. Then I heard about the shooting and waslike, 'Damn, my boy might have done that.'"

Police believe Klass shot Robinson, 34, in the chest while the clerk was trying to protect his girlfriend a week ago at the MB Vineyards liquor store in Midwood. The suspect was wearing a mask when he burst into the store.

Detectives zeroed in on Klass, 33, after receiving street tips that he was the killer. Investigators traced the license plate number for the suspect's car and took him into custody early Tuesday, police said.

While questioning him for Robinson's murder, cops charged him witha robbery committed elsewherein Brooklyn on June 28, according to Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. Though Klass has not confessed, he made incriminating statements, police sources said. Klass was charged with first-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

State records show Klass served 11 years in state prison after a 1998 conviction for attempted murder and robbery. He was released in October and remains on parole.

Details of that crime weren't immediately available. Robinson, a father of four, was mourned in an emotional ceremony Monday and was scheduled to be buried in Jamaica today next to his grandmother Pearl.

The Jamaican-born Robinson left a hip-hop career and turned away from a troubled past to convert to Judaism 11 years ago.
