How Sarah Palin Got a AAA
Credit Rating for Alaska

The former governor has a lot to teach
Washington about earning a strong credit
rating. Her secret: raise taxes :D

In light of Friday's decision by Standard and Poor's to downgrade the United
States' credit rating to AA+, it's worth mentioning again -- as I first did in
this Atlantic piece -- that Alaska recently had its bond rating raised to AAA
for the first time in the state's history, largely due to fiscal improvements
brought about by Sarah Palin while she was governor.
The state currently
enjoys a $12 billion budget surplus. I was reminded of this fact over the
weekend by Ian Lazaren, the indefatigable supporter-cultist behind
Conservatives4Palin.com.

This is unquestionably a good thing for the people of Alaska, just as the
country's downgrade is a bad thing. The state enjoys lower borrowing costs
as a result. But especially in light of the current dysfunction in Washington,
it's important to understand why Alaska's fiscal situation improved: It was
largely because Palin raised taxes.
Specifically, the state oil tax. Her central
achievement as governor was signing a law, Alaska's Clear and Equitable
Share (ACES), that dramatically increased the state's share of oil profits
just as oil prices began to take off. There's a direct line between increased
revenue and improved fiscal health.

But, the good folks at Conservatives4 Palin have posted a gloating item
about Alaska's credit-rating that both attacks Obama for raising taxes and
neglects to mention that Palin's own tax increase was the basis for the
improvement.)

This chart from the Alaska Department of Revenue nicely illustrates the
result. For purposes of comparison, ACES is best measured against EFL,
since the intervening tax (PPT) was tarnished by corruption and ultimately
replaced by ACES, a story recounted in my piece:

Who and what you fear is used to scare others....

Focus on the 44th President driving this country in the gutter.
So she all of a sudden bad because she raised taxes? I thought you and your ilk liked sticking it to the man. What is tour position on the downgrade. As I recall you said a few months ago that everything is turning around. :puke: Hope you don't have any investments...

Answer the question? He offers no plan. Anything the GOP offered he threatened to veto. He is the leader of the free world and he has no clue. You said the economy is turning around. We've had over 9% unemployment for the past year!! I guess it is Bush's fault. He is a failure. Typical liberal, challenge the source, but will not touch content. What do the recent events say about your party platform when your voting base consists of the lowest common denominator, the least informed politically, the least educated, the most likely to receive government entitlements. You sound like John Kerry attacking the tea party when his a-- has been in Washington for years. What in the hell Palin has to do with Obama policies and continued entitlement promises that led to the downgrade?

Am I wrong or did the Tea Partier miss the entire point?

As I read it, you're pointing out that Tea Party Icon Sarah Palin raised taxes, when raising taxes is anathema nation-wide.

The problem is not that she raised taxes, but that she and other conservatives continue to pretend raising taxes doesn't increase revenues, when their actions prove they know that it does not.

Defending Sarah Palin by changing the topic from "Does raising taxes work" to "What's wrong with Sarah Palin raising taxes" is ineffective to say the least.

For me, the current President doesn't enter into the discussion. I'm disgusted by the flimsy catch phrases used to convince the masses that by doing whatever corporate America desires, our lives will be better.

Found this tidbit from Cato @ Liberty. She took on the corrupt politicians on both sides of the aisle. Many in her own party due to their corruption. Your article didn't tell who and why taxes we raised on. They were raised on the oil companies for allegedly bribing politicians. Her record as mayor is spotty at best on taxes. You are correct in that observation. But in this situation, both parties and the oil companies were hosing the people. So to curb, that bad behavior she said when your prices increase so will the compensation to the people. Similar to our state. Landrieu and Vitter fought for more compensation from the Feds on oil production in the south. They were robbing us blind on our backs at the expense of us failing EPA regulations.

One of her signature accomplishments as governor was a $1.5 billion tax increase on oil production, infuriating oil companies, according to The New York Times. She accused oil companies of bribing legislators to keep taxes low and, soon after, passed a $1,200 “energy rebate” to each Alaskan from the state’s budget surplus.

Then she passed a rebate to give money to the people!!

and a weak retort.

Try to find more of the tidbits of reasoning that might still be left in your brain and less of the political talking points by which you appear too easily influenced.

The author of the story omitted the reason why she did what she did. Anything you don't agree with is a talking point or cheerleading. You still can't answer the question about the economy. This post is not about saving Obama, Palin is your crutch.
