Victim’s uncle: Hannah was a ‘good kid who got involved with the wrong person’
An ex-con was collared for accidentally shooting his girlfriend dead during a botched hold-up in a car parked on a North Carolina street last weekend, police said.
Aaron Byers, 19, allegedly shot 17-year-old Hannah Bickley after he pulled a gun on two men sitting in the car with them in Shelby — a small town about 45 miles west of Charlotte — early Saturday, according to WSOC-TV.
Cops arrived to the scene moments later, but Bickley — who was slated to graduate Cherryville High School in a few weeks — had already died.
One woman said she woke up to her son yelling that someone was shot.
“He heard gunshots. Where they came from, he didn’t know,” the woman, who did not give her name, told WCNC-TV.
“He said, ‘Let me in, mom, and don’t look out — there’s a body laying in your yard.’”
Byers, an alleged Bloods member who was convicted on a string of felony breaking and entering charges last December, didn’t mean to shoot his girlfriend and flagged down responding officers about two blocks away, cops said.
He initially told police that he and his girlfriend were held up at gunpoint while dropping off money for a friend, cops said.
But investigators found that Byers fired the fatal round while trying to rob two men inside the car and booked the teen on a battery of charges that include murder, possession of a firearm and attempted armed robbery.
The couple had been dating against the wishes of Bickley’s family.
“They had each other’s name tattooed on them and they were always kissing and hugging on each other every time I saw them,” one of Bickley’s neighbors told WSOC-TV.
The teenaged girl’s uncle, Brian Bickley, told the news station that his niece refused to stop seeing Byers.
“We did everything we could to try to get some separation between those two,” he said.
