People don't realize that Douglass and his second wife Helen Pitts, were not only hated by the typical White Racists of that era, but even staunch Abolitionists (White and Black) had trouble with their marriage. She was also at least two decades younger than him.
Also, Douglass himself was bi-racial. So it made perfect sense to me, when I read up on this so many years ago.
