5 reasons Nintendo is discontinuing its ridiculously popular $60 game console, the NES Classic

http://www.businessinsider.com/why-...r-intended-as-a-product-but-as-a-commercial-1

1. The NES Classic Edition was never intended as a product, but as a commercial.

- Its last console, the Wii U, was a flop.

- Its portable console, the 3DS, was fading.

- With few exceptions ("Super Mario Maker," for instance), Nintendo's stable of hit franchises was stagnating.

In so many words, Nintendo — a company that once dominated the video game market internationally — was fading from relevance and losing to its competition. The NES Classic Edition was an amazing way to, at once, remind people of their love for Nintendo and to break back into mainstream attention.

It's a box that looks identical to a miniaturized NES console — Nintendo's most iconic game console — and it comes with all your favorite classics ("Super Mario Bros.," "The Legend of Zelda," etc.). More important, it's just $60. It's the perfect combination of nostalgia and low cost.

If you get one before the production ends this month, you're thinking about Nintendo (and maybe buying that new Nintendo Switch console that you keep hearing good things about?). If you can't find one, you're still thinking about Nintendo (and maybe buying that new Nintendo Switch console that you keep hearing good things about?).

Either way, Nintendo managed to put its brand back in the center of the spotlight. That was the point.

2. Nintendo has a history of creating collector's items. As of now, the NES Classic Edition is a collector's item.

Nintendo has some of the most serious, dedicated fans of any company in entertainment — rivaling the likes of Marvel and Disney. These are the kind of fans who get tattooed, who name their pets and children after Nintendo game characters, who begrudgingly buy their fifth or sixth copy of "Super Mario World" on yet another new piece of Nintendo hardware.

I should know — I'm one of these people.

And the NES Classic Edition — while a commercial for Nintendo itself — is a gushing love letter aimed at Nintendo's most serious fans. It's no surprise that it's only available for a limited time; if everyone could get it, it wouldn't be a collector's item!

This is, of course, driving up re-sale costs. And frustrating the hell out of people who can't find the system. But that's how artificial supply constraint works.

3. Nintendo has a new console to sell that costs much more than $60, that's a much bigger risk, that it wants you to pay attention to: the Nintendo Switch.

If people are busy buying the NES Classic Edition, they're unlikely to rush out to buy another new Nintendo game console anytime soon. At least that's what Nintendo is betting, and the company likely has data to back up the assertion.

It's no mistake that the Switch launched five months after the NES Classic Edition, in early March 2017. If the Switch and the NES Classic Edition had both launched last holiday season, the hype for the mini NES Classic Edition would've surely overshadowed the Switch.

That's an especially important point: The Switch is Nintendo's future. It's the console that Nintendo is betting the next five to ten years on. The NES Classic Edition is a short-term profit with no extendability: You can't buy games for the NES Classic Edition, nor can you download them. It's a one and done revenue generator for Nintendo. The Switch is an ongoingrevenue generator for Nintendo. That's a tremendously important difference.

4. Nintendo is extremely protective of its classic games.

Nintendo isn't big on selling its classic franchises for $2 apiece, and that's exactly what it's doing with the NES Classic Edition. In reality, it's selling those games for less than $2 apiece because of the cost of the NES Classic Edition hardware itself.

You may have noticed that Nintendo's library of classics isn't available on your iPhone or Android phone. While there are many reasons for that, prime among them is Nintendo's belief that mobile storefronts tend to commoditize games. And Nintendo has no interest in commoditizing its classic games, in the same way that Disney has no interest in commoditizing its classic movies. The way that Disney controls its films is through its "vault" system: selectively releasing movies for a limited time.

Nintendo isn't quite so controlling with its classic games library, but the company is notorious for charging players over and over for the same game on multiple platforms. That's normal when you're talking about movies — buying the Blu-ray copy of something you once owned on VHS, for instance — but less normal when you're talking about games like "Super Mario Bros." You're essentially buying the same game over and over. I've probably paid for the original "Super Mario Bros." 10 or 15 times in my life, even though I own the original NES cartridge.

5. Nintendo wants to sell you classic games on the Switch.

Along those same lines, Nintendo is planning to sell those classic games on the Nintendo Switch... but not yet.

Just as Nintendo has done on the Nintendo Wii, 3DS, and Wii U, the Switch is going to get the "Virtual Console" service. And what's the Virtual Console service? It's a digital storefront for selling classic Nintendo games — the same kind of games you might find on the NES Classic Edition, for instance.

Get it? Indeed: Nintendo is going to sell classic games through a digital storefront on the Nintendo Switch, and selling a $60 console with 30 of Nintendo's most classic games is a great way to dissuade people from buying those.

(Of note: The Virtual Console isn't available on the Nintendo Switch just yet; Nintendo says it's coming later in the year.)

Speaking of raspberry pi. There are enthusiasts who will shove a pi in just about anything...

You saw what they did with those Sega Genesis hubs. If that AtGames Genesis clone flops this fall, I can see those guys buying those things just to gut them and shove a pi inside of it.

NINTENDO WILL REPORTEDLY RELEASE SNES CLASSIC EDITION THIS YEAR

BY JOE SKREBELS Nintendo discontinued the NES Classic Edition because it will release the much-requested SNES Classic Edition this year, according to a new report.

Eurogamer - whose sources correctly leaked information about Nintendo's Switch console prior to its reveal - claims that the SNES Classic Edition (or SNES Mini in Europe) will be released in time for Christmas, and that development is underway.

There's no information on what games the microconsole could include, nor whether it aims to correct some of the problems with NES Classic Edition, such as its unit shortages, and its absurdly short controller cable.

Nintendo controversially discontinued production of the NES Classic Edition last week, despite its sell-out popularity and a clamour for new units to be produced. Nintendo explained that “NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product."

In our review of the NES Classic, we said, "Nintendo’s tiny console is wonderfully made, but its painfully short controller limits how you enjoy these games."

IGN has contacted Nintendo for comment.

man benq I gotta give you your props on calling this one...I was completely wrong about this shit...def was more than a fad...shoulda jumped on it when you posted about it

rumor is bestbuy will have some in store and online on mon. ...and switches on fri.

Amazon France has official nes classic controllers , you can use your USA login
They come out to 3 for $72 if you order 3 or 2 for $52 or 1 for $32

Reminder they sell for $60 on eBay right now

Makes me wonder if Nintendo really put that thing out to drum up support for the Switch. A person walks in the store looking for the NES Mini and instead buys a Switch?

On a side note, for those of us who are more tied to Sega than Nintendo, one can only hope that the success of the NES Mini spurs AtGames to attempt to put more effort into their Genesis clone consoles. If you look at the post I put up at reply #294, AtGames seems to be doing just that, by dropping the AV and going for HDMI and outputting at 720p and as you can see below the new model actually looks like a Genesis as opposed to the bullshit AtGames was putting out before. As for now this thing will be released in the fall of 2017 and cost 89.99 Euros and it'll have a cartridge slot.

Obviously the biggest thing will be the sound emulation. Youtube reviews will probably make or break this thing in the end tho.

Any update on this sega USA release ?

I see why you bought the switch , you follow the hype

I not gonna lie...I do @ times...in the switch's case...it was very much worth it tho...I play it more than my XB1...I would trade in my PS4 if I didn't have digital games on it that I haven't played yet

The problem is what do you plan on playing after Zelda or are you gonna drag it out for a year
Cause Mario is the next big game for the switch

I would buy a Nintendo console if it was as powerful as the current consoles and got all the third party games , destiny 2,red dead and regular controller no gimmicks
They just gave up on that after they lost to Sony

I probably won't even come close to finishing zelda til the end of summer...the game is that huge...and I don't have to wait to finish playing zelda to play other games...already playing MK8 which is way more fun that I could've ever imagined...always thought it was a silly ass game just from looking @ the videos...shit is cool tho...or I can play fast RMX if I wanna get a little more serious w/ the competition...good game...somewhat steep learning curve...I have shovel knight and snipperclips too but neither game has held my attention tho...I have the ARMS demo which is playable next week...not expecting much from it tho...the next big game I'm looking to sink my teeth into is splatoon 2...so I'm pretty good on games

So I finally got a mini nes and mini snes.
I'm thinking of adding some roms to the nes. I don't want every nes game ever, just a few like ninja gaiden 2 &3, Castlevania 3, Batman etc.
I know there's a lot of YouTube videos on the subject but I'm looking to see if anyone on here has done it.
