A recent study by the Schott Foundation for Public Education reported that Newark, New Jersey leads the nation in the percent of African American male students graduating from high school, followed by Maryland, California and Pennsylvania

Conversely, the report also acknowledged New Jersey’s Abbot plan for creating systematic change that yielded significant results. New Jersey is now the only state with a large African American population with a greater than 65 percent high school graduation rate for Black males.

Just saw it on the local news today. And Cacs are kinda salty about it too. They're saying this is the last straw for the City of Newark. If this dont work then people are not gonna give big to anyone else ever. Cacs were saying how the kids out in LA just had a 600 million dollar school now this.

I admit that when I read that they were already spending $22,000 a year per kid I was shocked. The national average is like 8 or 9, and charter schools graduate geniuses at 99% for as little as 3k a year per kid. I hope they find a realistic way to do this at a fraction of what they're spending now. If not, it really will be a waste of money.

Beat me to it.Pouring money into education is futile when their foundation(family structure) is so fucked up.Nigeria,Ethiopia,Nepal and India are far poorer than Newark has ever been,yet immigrants from these countries excel in our school system.

I have worked in inner city schools my whole career and work now in more of a "mixed" school/area w/ a "dominance" of white folks...and it's not entirely about the $$$ but the effort put forth by the parents and subsequently the students who reflect their parents...once you have a community like that where there is a value/respect for education then of course you have teachers who are more willing to put forth the effort needed as opposed to the apathy toward education in other areas as a result of apathetic parents which lead to apathetic students which lead to apathetic teachers and so on...it was fucked up working in the "hood" and I was the only mufucka coming to work enthused and shit...it's def not the "poverty" but the values/mentality that ppl in low-income areas in this country have...I have to shake my head @ some of our ppl sometimes

A 100 mil is a lot donated from a single source.. but it's a drop in the bucket to be shared by multiple schools in a single district. It's only about 10% of their annual budget of nearly $1 bil. And this is a single donation. If this was given annually, they can say yea, our budget increased by 10%/year see why this isn't much?

Teachers spend 7 hours out the day w/ children for roughly half the year...in inner city schools a lot of time is wasted trying to correct what these children pick up from their friends/families when they are not in school for the rest of that time during the day as well as the other 185 days they are not in school...anyway the problem is simple...hire more black men in the classroom who want to be there...it really is that damn simple...you want to reach black children? Hire more young black men who can connect w/ them and have the patience/skills to deal w/ them.

Newark graduates a higher% of black boys than any other big school district in the US. Partly because they get more funding than would usually be allocated based on their tax base. Shows that $ and the right team can go a long way to changing kids lives. They've been improving fora while now and this $100 mil should be a big help.

Dont be so quick to call these guys coons that say its a waste of money. If you ever spent any time in Newark you would probably feel the same way. And its a shame because the city has so much potential. For one. They have one of the biggest Airport hubs in the world. Second. Even though New Jersey has the highest property taxes in the Country, Newark has the lowest property taxes in the state. A home in Newark will get taxed about 2k a year. You go right next door to Irvington, or a few miles away at West CaldWell and the same house will run you 6 to 9k a year. Last, Newark is 15 minutes from New York. Thats 11 million potential home owners.

There is and always will be a lot of money on Newark. But the crime rate is too high and the Educational system is one of the worst. When they solve those two things, they'll come back strong.
