ViacomCBS is having a hard time convincing people to subscribe to its new streaming service Paramount+, but its new “Godfather” series might be an offer we just cannot refuse.
ViacomeCBS announced five original series to debut on the new streaming site, one of which includes “The Offer” a scripted drama about the making of “The Godfather” from the perspective of the film’s producer Al Ruddy.
The series will highlight the production of the 1972 classic which was fraught with controversy and conflict, and even almost sparked an ethnic conflict in the Italian-American community at the time it came out.
The series will be written by novelist and filmmaker Michaerl Tolkin who co-wrote “Deep Impact,” “Dawn of the Dead,” and “Escape at Dannemora.”
The 10-episode series is set for release in 2021, and will detail Ruddy’s desperate attempts to convince Marlon Brando to take the iconic role of Vitto Corleone, his attempts to assure the Italian-American community that their violent portrayal in the movies would not lead to a xenophobic backlash against them, and the taboos on depicting gangsters is anything but a villainous light.
The series joins a host of original content that will attempt to lull people to pay for Paramount+ including the originally made spy thriller “Lioness,” a reboot of VH1’s “Behind the Music” which wil feature 40 years of archived MTV footage, a original drama series called “The Game” and a reboot of “The Real Criminal Minds.”
ViacomCBS also announced that the new “Spongebob Squarepants” series “Kamp Koral” will debut later in 2021, along with 30,000 episodes from popular series that debuted on Viacom-owned channels like BET, Comedy Central, MTV, and Nickelodeon.
“Paramount is an iconic and storied brand beloved by consumers all over the world, and it is synonymous with quality, integrity and world-class storytelling,” said a ViacomCBS statement.
“With Paramount+, we're excited to establish one global streaming brand in the broad-pay segment that will draw on the sheer breadth and depth of the ViacomCBS portfolio to offer an extraordinary collection of content for everyone to enjoy.”
While CBS was early to the streaming competition with Netflix, it was relatively unsuccessful, only offering a few original series titles like a “The Good Wife” spin-off, a new “Star Trek” series, and the Jordan Peele created reimagining of “The Twilight Zone.”
Viacom acquired both CBS and Paramount studios in 2019 and hopes that the combined libraries of Paramount, CBS, Miramax, and Viacom will be able to compete with Disney, Hulu, and Netflix who are currently dominating the online streaming field.
Paramount+ will be able to offer television series and movies that have been noticeably missing on many other streaming services, and like Disney+ will likely begin to discontinue distribution rights with other streaming services as the launch of Paramount+ gets closer.
