NEW ORLEANS -- Greg Tillery got his start selling chicken and shrimp out of a food truck, and even back in those days he gave to the homeless whenever he could.

Now he pays rent on Canal, at 1407, but says his policy is still the same: homeless are always welcome at his businesses. "I don't care about the money, I have enough to help feed them when they're hungry," said Tillery.

With the weather dropping below freezing, homeless shelters are reaching capacity. We Dat Chicken and Wings is just steps from the underpass at Canal and I-10, where hundreds of homeless people camp.

"We have heat, they are always welcome to come in here and warm up, charge their phones, and get a plate of hot food," said Tillery.

On Wednesday when the city was under a freeze warning, Tillery's restaurant was packed with dozens of homeless.

"We're very thankful for him, his food is amazing and it's freezing outside," said one person who wishes to remain anonymous.

Tillery is known among the homeless as the guy who offers his services year round. He brings cleaning supplies and food to the people under the bridge at Canal any chance he can get.

"I encourage them to come here, for me it's not about money it's about people. I love people," said Tillery.

Tonight they will be open until midnight providing free food and heat to those in need.

I feel him. It always makes me sick to see fast food places throwing out the food they can't sell. Especially when you live in a city where one more catastrophe could put you under the bridge right next to them

That can happen in any city.

No they don't

That's obviously a joke, people have doing things like that for generations.

Real estate in New Orleans is selling fast, so fast that people in New Orleans East are urging their neighbors not to sell their homes.

If there wasn't so much death the joke wouldn't make sense. Just like a gay joke about San Francisco makes more sense than a gay joke about Omaha.

Also, if the real estate market is so hot then why is it cheaper to rent an apartment in the French Quarter right along the Mississippi then it is to get a room 10 miles from San Francisco downtown?

Not insulting, just asking.

The tech industry dumb ass. They have inflated the housing market. I have fam out there . Cali and Ny housing has always been hire then average. How do I know this? Im out in Frisco I see the market.

Shopping at Wegmans and walking round the city you see the poverty has taken its toll on families young and elderly. That's why I donate and give back.

When it comes to New Orleans, things being haunted, ghosts, voodoo and things of that sort have been associated with this city since it's founding, that "Not haunted" sign has nothing to do with crime and more to do with trying to get pique some outsiders interest in buying the property. Those sort of things have always drawn people to New Orleans. Secondly besides San Francisco's tech industry, New Orleans is in the south and things are always going to be cheaper in the south. I live here, you don't. I'm watching neighborhoods change, I'm seeing new people come in and come in rapidly.

I'll take your word for that then. Just seems odd to see so many for sale signs in the city's most iconic neighborhoods. Usually that's a sign that the city has seen better days or it's about to collapse.

And no, I never associated the hauntings with crime. Everywhere has crime
