New Orleans Pelicans guard Bryce Dejean-Jones has died at the age of 23, the Dallas County coroner's office confirmed to Travis Hines of the Ames Tribune on Saturday.

The coroner's office did not give Hines a cause of death.

NBA player Bryce Dejean-Jones was killed early Saturday after police say he “kicked open the front door” to a Dallas apartment and the man sleeping inside woke up and shot him.

Dejean-Jones, 23-year-old guard for the New Orleans Pelicans, broke into an apartment in the 2500 block of Bennett Avenue about 3:20 a.m.

The commotion startled the man sleeping inside, who police say grabbed his handgun and “called out,” but got no answer. Police say Dejean-Jones then kicked the door to the bedroom — and the man fired.

Dejean-Jones ran out of the apartment and “collapsed in the breezeway,” police say. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died.

An autopsy had not yet been performed, but his agent confirmed to ESPN that Dejean-Jones died from a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Don't know what that young man was up to, but his mind wasn't right that night. Rest in peace to him.
