ALLEN PARK -- One day after the Lions went with a walkthrough practice, they decided to brave the steady snow falling at their Allen Park facility and use the blistery conditions to prepare for an indoor home game against the Panthers on Sunday.

Those Panthers decided to cancel their Thursday practice rather than spend it outdoors in the rain, as they don't have an indoor facility to use in times of inclement weather.

These Lions are different under Matt Patricia, though. They left the indoor facility alone as they did their work outdoors. Patricia coached defensive back drills in shorts, and chief of staff Kevin Anderson was shoveling the snow to clear room for players to be able to run.

Detroit was without three key players for the second straight day as wide receiver Marvin Jones (knee), defensive tackle A'Shawn Robinson (ankle) and tight end Michael Roberts (shoulder) all missed to nurse injuries.

On Wednesday, the Lions had a lengthy list of players who practiced in limited fashion: defensive end Ezekiel Ansah (shoulder), defensive tackle Snacks Harrison (shoulder), linebacker Eli Harold (shoulder), linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin (neck), cornerback Darius Slay (knee) and tight end Luke Willson (shoulder). All of those players were present Thursday, though a full practice report will be available in the late afternoon.

Jones' absence two weeks after the trade of Golden Tate to the Eagles has Detroit up against it to re-establish a passing game that has been the team's bread and butter since Matthew Stafford arrived. Despite the need to replace a high-volume slot receiver, the Lions opted two weeks ago to practice outside in the pouring rain and then spent Thursday in steady snow. Both weeks had indoor games on the slate.

After Wednesday's walkthrough and Thursday's outdoor practice, the Lions will have one more session Friday before they take on the 6-3 Panthers. Detroit is looking to snap a three-game losing streak to break out of a 3-6 record.

Detroit's game against Carolina on Sunday will mark its first of four straight in indoor venues, but that isn't stopping Patricia from tapping into his Central New York roots and choosing to practice the team outside in the snow.

Jim Caldwell had only had one losing season and made the playoffs twice in his four years as the head coach of the Lions....The other year he missed the playoffs, he had a winning record for the organization.
