The "rich get Richer"! Leave it to the Patriots to make an unpopular move, guaranteed to earn the Patriot fans ire, involving two popular players....Mike Vrabel-age 34 (LB) and Matt Cassel (the unexpected leader of a 11-5 season).
The recipients of this trade, the Kansas City Chiefs, are elated, and feel 'blessed'. It pays to be Scott Pioli, Chiefs GM. Although, he may not feel 'blessed at the end of the season. The Chiefs don't have the excellent supporting personnel, Matt Cassel enjoyed in New England...especially receivers. Plus, their All-Pro TE, Tony Gonzalez, is retiring after next season.
With this trade the Patriots reduced their 'salary cap' obligations by roughly $30M, and eliminated a bonus payment to Mike Vrabel. Besides improving their 'cap' space, New England frees itself of having to pay 2-QB's atarters' salaries, and the 2nd Rd.(34th overall) pick will probably turn out to be a future All-Pro. They refused a 1st Rd. pick. Why? Too much money, to sign him. Especially too much money for an 'unproven' player. In fact the NFL will address this situation during negotiations for the new bargaining agreement. Veterans HATE that practice. They want more $$ for themselves....makes sense!
