‘Locke & Key’ Drama From Carlton Cuse, Joe Hill & IDW Gets Hulu Pilot Order

Hulu has given a pilot order to Locke & Key, a one-hour horror/fantasy drama adaptation of the IDW comic by Joe Hill(The Fireman) and artist Gabriel Rodriguez (Little Nemo). The project comes from Hill, Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel, The Strain) and IDW Entertainment, with Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson set to direct.

Cuse developed Locke & Key with Hill who wrote the script on spec. The finished script was sent to one director, Derrickson, who came on board right away and, if the pilot goes to series, is expected to stay with the show for the first season and direct multiple episodes before segueing to the Doctor Strange sequel.

The script, with Derrickson attached, was taken out to the marketplace, garnering strong interest from multiple networks before landing at Hulu in a very competitive situation.

Locke & Key revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.

Cuse will serve as showrunner. He is executive producing with Hill; Derrickson; Lindsey Springer of Carlton Cuse Prods.; Ted Adams, CEO of IDW Media Holdings; and David Ozer, President of IDW Entertainment.

Locke & Key previously was adapted during the 2010-11 development season when it reached the pilot stage at Fox with Josh Friedman writing, Mark Romanek directing, and Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci producing alongside DreamWorks TV. While the pilot, starring Sarah Bolger, Miranda Otto and Nick Stahl, did not go to series, the title has remained a cult favorite, with Hill and IDW Entertainment last year announcing that they were taking a new stab at it for television. The unaired Fox pilot also screened at Comic-Con in 2011.

At Hulu, Locke & Key joins pilot Marvel’s Runaways.

Since IDW Entertainment’s official launch as an independent production company in December 2013, the company has launched Wynonna Earp on Syfy in the U.S., Spike TV in the UK and Australia, and Netflix globally; and Dirk Gently, based on the best-selling comic novels by Douglas Adams and starring Sam Barnett and Elijah Wood, on BBC America in the U.S. and the rest of the world on Netflix. Both series are returning for a second season in 2017.

Cuse has departing Bates Motel at A&E and The Strain at FX; as well as Colony at USA, recently renewed for a third season; and the upcoming Amazon series Jack Ryan.

smart move. let's get production started on this. I have a feeling this could be as big as Stranger Things.

You guys are a bunch of nerds. Bgol has put me onto so many comic books and books that I have never heard or read before. Much thanks to bgol for turning me on to something new again that was/is a comic book. 3 episodes in and I like it.

Well played Dodge...

I knew something was up with that one person

Damn Sorry White Rufus.

Pretty good first season... I just need ol girl to put her fear back in her head.

I actually think the show works better as a fantasy show focused on Survivors guilt... vs a straight horror show.

I still think that fox pilot is the best example of this property but this was way better then I expected. I do like the fact that some of the really stupid choices of the kids is explained by the fact that they all witnessed something extremely traumatic and didn’t know how to process it.

So is this worth watching? And how kid friendly? My 12 year old daughter might want to watch with me..

Did they leave the rape scene and brutal murders in from the comic or did the eliminate those for younger audiences?

Third episode in, yeah, there's a violent scene. Read the comics years ago so I don't remember all the violence and rape.

I wouldnt let her watch... there is mild profanity, an almost sex scene... a child gets merced and Dodge is not ashamed Kill anyone whose last name isn't Locke. Its very close to Stranger Things.... Not as good as Stranger Things, but its got ton of potential in the Second Season.

I definitely love me some Dodge...... and the Kid from Falling Skies needs to be in more shit.
