Light as you take it, Voltron was actually KILLING motherfuckers on a fairly regular basis. Not only was he destroying Zarkon's (fully manned) warships, but his "Ro-beasts" were very often just super enhanced members of Zarkon's army or tragic members of races and planets Zarkon already conquered...
