Netflix Discussion Thread: Iron Fist (New Trailer!)

We need to all calm down

Marvel aint been wrong yet...

Iron Fist is SUPPOSED to look like that.

He is supposed to look like the blonde white innocent

who learns to become the ultimate weapon, and when he returns to the modern world is now completely out of place

think Last Samurai meets Coming to america meets Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

so live action kung-fu panda?

you already KNOW they gotta whitewash it anyway but Stan the man been white washed it even back then

that was the GO TO story ling on some Billy Jack Chuck Norris ...

why you think they aint let Bruce be the lead in Kung Fu? Keanu in Last Samurai?

but this show writes itself and could be a GREAT way to intrude mysticism into such a gritty Netflix Marvel Universe.

You make K'un-Lun like Crouching Tiger show the Flashback to the training and how he defeated the "dragon" which you could make both literal and psychological.

And he is a fish out of water who Luke Cage pretty much adopts and helps control his power in modern NY

he is on some vengeance like Arrow to find his father's killer, fights crime, and the challenges of living in the modern worlds.

The fight scenes need to be on some classic Bruce Lee Jackie Chan John Woo John Wick The Riot level

Add some Eastern spirituality and you got yourself a hit...

This is just my opinion, they should get the actor from "Into the Badlands", to be Iron fist and use the choreography team to do the fight scenes.

People whining about Iron Fist’s race are dead wrong

Maybe it’s time to launch a witness protection program for casting directors.

Thursday it was reported that British actor Finn Jones landed the lead in Netflix’s upcoming fourth Marvel series, “Iron Fist,” and the social media world predictably exploded with outrage.

It’s just the latest in a long line of casting controversies, as critics took to Twitter and Facebook demanding to know why a square-jawed, handsome white guy was cast instead of an Asian.

This particular outburst seems misguided compared with the furor over, say, SPF 60-using Joel Edgerton being tapped to play a Pharaoh in “Exodus: Gods and Kings” or Joseph Fiennes signing up to play Michael Jackson. (Actually, that last one kinda makes sense.)

In the Marvel comics upon which the TV series is based, Iron Fist is, like Jones, a square-jawed, handsome white guy. At least, that’s how he’s been portrayed for the past 42 years.

“Tired of people’s defense of casting a white actor for Iron Fist because ‘he’s white in the comics!’ So?” one critic whined on Twitter.

So? It’s called story.

Iron Fist first appeared in 1974, a product of pop culture’s chopsocky craze. Marvel’s “The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu” and the “Kung Fu” TV series were two other examples.

In his origin story, Iron Fist is Danny Rand, the blond, blue-eyed son of a wealthy New Yorker who’d discovered a mystical city in another dimension called K’un L’un. When Rand’s father is murdered while searching for the city (which appears only every 10 years), the young boy is adopted by the city’s ruler and taught martial arts so he can one day avenge his daddy’s murder.

This is classic fish-out-of-water stuff, and much of the story’s appeal is watching Rand navigate an alien culture, and struggling with — before ultimately mastering — skills that are exotic to him as a New Yorker.

That’s the story, and if you change the character, you change the story. That’s not to say a compelling tale couldn’t be told with an Asian Iron Fist — it just would be a different one.

Also, are critics really going to argue that any hero whose strength is martial-arts training should be Asian? Let’s give him a bad Fu Manchu mustache and an inability to pronounce R’s while we’re at it.

Even still, the chance that a nonwhite actor might have been cast as Iron Fist isn’t all that farfetched.

Marvel Studios decided to base its cinematic Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) on the black Nick Fury from the publisher’s modern-day Ultimate line of comics, not the old white guy from its classic line.

In print, Marvel has for the past few years gone on a gender- and race-swapping bender. Characters who were once white, such as Captain America, became black. Others, like Thor, have gone from male to female. (She earns just 0.7 mugs of mead compared to her male counterpart.)
The changes have been criticized as a desperate bid to appease those loudly calling for more diversity in the superhero world, rather than an attempt to create more exciting storylines.

But to randomly swap a character’s race and gender without a corresponding change in story is wrong-headed.

Back in 2003, Marvel released a miniseries about an African-American Captain America who gained his superpowers after being illegally experimented on by the government.

The storyline echoed shameful elements from America’s past, including the infamous Tuskegee experiments, and would have worked only with an African-American protagonist. That was sorta the whole point.

Jessica Jones, the eponymous star of a hit Netflix series, is white. Sure, the makers of the show could have made her black in a bid for more diversity, but then you’d lose one of the more interesting facets of her character: She’s in an interracial relationship with Luke Cage, an arrangement that, even in 2016, still comes with its own issues and prejudices.

Race and gender are crucial components of character. The solution to Hollywood’s diversity crisis isn’t to start making every straight, white male character female or gay or Pacific Islander or black or Latino. It’s to create new shows about fully formed characters of every color and stripe.

And maybe just steer clear of this particular storyline, mm-kay?

Welp...... We definitely know at least ONE character who dies this season on Game of Thrones.

R.I.P. Knight of Flowers

Making him Asian would have taken away from the fact that Danny Rand is a white rich spolied culture vulture.

It would have changed the dynamics between him and Cage and Misty.

Not making him Asian is a big mistake, same dumb shit that makes Batman corny in my book, white boy goes over there and learn more about the arts IN JUST A FEW DAMNED YEARS than the people who invented it and been practicing it for thousands of years... The ultimate culture vulture white man supremacy movie..

Fixed

The faggot from Game of Thrones???????????? AAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllll the mothafuckas acting and they chose this dude?

Oh well.
This is what gets me, this same exact fact. Yes, he might be a known face, but it's not the only thing that's important when selling a series? Not many people knew who the female who played Jessica Jones was and that series was successful. Why? Because of good content, and good acting, well, decent acting, and a reputable base in marvel.

I always said batman is a representation of the white man mastery and the power of money, Superman = the white man divinity/ god like status and superior physical specimens, Tarzan = white man superior mater of nature, Sleeping Beauty/ Snow White = white woman supreme beauty and purity, this one is a a bit harder to pick up Wonder Woman/ Columbia = white man manifest destiny, Jesus / Prince charming/ knight in shinning armor/ most white heroes = white saviors...
Understanding this helps you understand how the white man plants seeds in our minds that ensures subliminal white supremacy bonds..
Its is so deep and profound in some that some blacks will fight you tooth and nail just to keep these mental constraints alive and kicking..

Damn they owe me 10% I told them to do this since LAST YEAR...

Marvel’s Iron Fist Will Take Fighting Lessons From Marco Polo’s Stunt Coordinator

Brett-Chan-marco-polo.jpg

Brett Chan has been added as a stunt coordinator on Marvel’s Iron Fist, where he’ll help shape and guide the mystical martial arts of the titular superhero for the Netflix series.

If that names sounds familiar, it’s because Chan previously helped out another Netflix show, Marco Polo, with its dependably awe-inspiring fight sequences. Besides that series, Chan has a history of working on films like X2: X-Men United, Blade: Trinity, and even in the small-screen DC universe with Arrow.

The news comes from Twitter, where a fan asked Philip J. Silvera (a stunt coordinator for Marvel’s Daredevil) who would have the honor of helping Iron Fist beat up bad guys in his new show.

For those who aren’t sure who Iron Fist is or what his powers are, here’s a quick snapshot of Netflix’s upcoming superhero show. Suffice it to say, it sounds like this one will be a bit more superpower-heavy than Netflix’s most recent Marvel series,Jessica Jones.

Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.

It’s pretty great news that the studio is packing some impressive punches behind the scenes for its new martial arts-heavy series. Daredevil‘s fight sequences are already somewhat legendary, but anyone who missed out on Marco Polo should give it a chance for the sheer creative entertainment of its more outlandish battle scenes.

Recent news confirmed Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones will play the role of Iron Fist for Netflix, which has stated it plans to launch the show in “early 2017.” That’s a ways out, but there’s plenty of MCU goodness for fans to savor in the meantime.

Love you RR and appreciate the general message of this post. But and it has been documented in other threads that you don't read comics and you aren't really familiar with their History. If you were and especially with Superman's history and specifically his origin and "creation" purpose(as told) then you would realize that your post lacks some tone. I'm not saying you don't have a point I'm just saying to the contrary on the surface, at least you don't. Beneath, the characters we can only infer and doing so by your premise only gives us contradictions. There are more shades of grays in that world than any other...

Why Should Netflix Have Cast an Asian-American Iron Fist?

29-iron-fist-blonde.w529.h352.jpg

Netflix and Marvel announced that Finn Jones, the actor best known for playing the Knight of Flowers on Game of Thrones, would play Iron Fist. Aesthetically speaking, he looks like the original comic-book character, Danny Rand: He’s a blond-haired, blue-eyed pretty boy. But for many, casting Finn Jones was a missed opportunity. The story of Iron Fist is one steeped in a familiar exoticism: Danny Rand journeys to the mystical land of K’un Lun, where he learns ancient martial arts only to become — surprise! — better than the original practitioners.

The idea of casting an Asian-American Iron Fist became a cause célèbre within the Asian-American community due to the article “Marvel, Please Cast an Asian-American Iron Fist,” written two years ago by Keith Chow, the founder of the pop-culture site Nerds of Color. From there, the blog 18 Million Rising began a petition to cast an Asian-American in the part, and a spirited, if not heated, conversation started around it. Vulture spoke with Chow to begin answering some of the questions you might have about what’s at stake in this debate. Here are answers to six questions you might have about why there was a push to make Iron Fist Asian-American.

1. Wait, so, who exactly is Iron Fist?
Most people, including casual comics fans, likely hadn’t heard of Iron Fist until Netflix announced they were making a television show. “He's not an A-List Marvel superhero,” said Chow. “You have Spider-Man, the X-Men, Captain America, and Iron Man, and then you have another level below them, which is like Daredevil. Iron First was probably, at best, C-level in the Marvel universe.”

In the comics, Iron Fist is the nom de superhero of Daniel "Danny" Rand, a rich kid from New York who gets imbued with magical powers in K’un Lun (an actual mountain chain in Asia with its own mythology), only to go back to New York to avenge his father’s death and fight crime. He was created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane in the 1970s, when martial arts movies were all the rage. At a certain point, he teams up with Luke Cage (played by Mike Colter in the Netflix/Marvel universe). “It was like this buddy cop kind of thing," said Chow, "where you have the street-smart black dude and the clueless white guy kind of coming together and having these adventures."

2. Why would you want to change the race of the original character?
Simply speaking, recasting Iron Fist as an Asian-American would not only have created the first Asian-American lead in the Marvel cinematic universe, but it would have offered a simple solution to the much thornier problem of orientalism in the show. “For me, the whole idea of an Asian-American Iron Fist has been less about the character specifically but the trope more broadly,” said Chow. “Like you have a ton of these stories already. If you need that story told, go watch The Last Samurai! Go watchThe Karate Kid 2!” Instead of a white man appropriating the qualities of Asian mysticism, it could have been a story of an Asian-American going back to his parents’ homeland as a way of reconnecting with them — a feeling that many second-generation Asian-Americans can relate to.

There aren't yet plot details from the show, so it's possible that the series would skip Rand's origin story entirely as a way to avoid its icky implications — but the fact that he's a white guy powered by Asian magic would remain.

3. Would casting an Asian-American fundamentally change the story?
“The funny thing is, the story wouldn't have to be that different,” said Chow. “All the basic story points could be the same: that he's the son of this rich industrialist who's obsessed with the mystical K’un Lun mountains. If the fundamental thing about Daniel Rand's character is that he is an outsider when he enters K'un Lun, nothing about that is dependent on his whiteness. If you think that's the case, then that is a very shallow reading of what it means to be an outsider.”

The point, of course, is that second-generation Asian-Americans (and beyond) would still feel out of place in a mystical Asian realm, and the story could explore other nuances of identity if the person were an adoptee or a mixed-race Asian-American. Their relationship with a place like K’un Lun would be fraught, personal, and immediate.

4. But shouldn’t you remain faithful to the “canon” — that is, the original source material?
One of the frequent arguments you'll hear when a person of color plays a traditionally white character is that it isn't in the "canon," but even that is a complicated idea. “Canon is subjective. No movie adaptation of anything has ever been 100 percent faithful,” said Chow. “There are always liberties taken when adapting anything. Even Deadpool hasn't done that. Everyone loves Deadpool, but there are so many versions of the character in the comics already. Like, which one is considered canon?”

The question instead pivots to one about the essence of a particular character, and whether you believe race is a necessary component. "Making Danny Rand Asian-American does not change the essence of who he is," said Chow. "Now, if your argument is that the essence of who Danny Rand is, is that he is a person who has benefited greatly from white privilege and entitlement, then okay, maybe that's probably right.” The more uncomfortable question, too, is that if the canon is inherently something sexist, racist, or homophobic, then why is it something that we need to remain faithful to?

5. Is it stereotypical to just see another Asian-American as a martial-arts superhero?
“There has been some pushback from Asian-Americans about how choosing Iron Fist to be the cause to fall behind is actually problematic because you’re choosing the one martial-arts guy,” said Chow. Indeed, beginning with Bruce Lee, the main vehicle for stardom for actors of Asian descent in the West has been as martial-arts stars. But actually the problem isn’t the martial artist, it’s the portrayal. “The reason that's considered a negative stereotype is because that particular type of character in Western stories is never given depth. He's only the bad guy or the mentor or the cannon fodder. That's it," said Chow. "So actually calling for an Asian-American Daniel Rand, that's not actually falling into those stereotypes, because what that means is that your lead character becomes flawed, cocky, sexy, funny, and has a love interest. If you give an Asian martial artist all of those textures, that's what disrupts the martial-arts stereotype.”

6. Are comics more diverse now?
In some senses, yes. The tentpole series have gotten reboots with people of color: Spider-Man is now Miles Morales, the Hulk is Amadeus Cho, Ms. Marvel is Kamala Khan. On screen there's Jason Momoa who will play Aquaman, who people originally might know as the blond guy who talks to fish. "[DC Comics is] like, 'You know, we're going to make Aquaman a Polynesian character — not only are we going to cast a Pacific Islander, we're going to imbue his story with Polynesian mythology,' which is actually kind of awesome," said Chow. "That's how you do it. That's the type of thinking that I think there needs to be more of in Hollywood."

Iron Fist May Setup Shang-Chi As Marvel’s Next Netflix Hero

Marvel TV’s Netflix universe if off to a tremendous start, and what was ambitiously planned as four character shows followed by a team-up, has already grown into so much more in a small amount of time. After Daredevil set records for Netflix and won over fans and critics, a second season was immediately put on the fast track. Then there was Jessica Jones, also getting a second season, which introduced Luke Cage who’s getting his own series this year. Similarly, Daredevil season 2 is introducing The Punisher who may get his own series.

And from what we’ve been hearing for a while now, Iron Fist may attempt to do something similar by introducing another Marvel Comics hero in Shang-Chi.

Shang-Chi is a character we suggested last year would make a great Marvel Comics hero for Netflix in our list of 12 Underrated Marvel Superheroes Who Should Get a Netflix TV Series, but more recently, and before Iron Fist was cast in January – where we helped break the news that it was Game of ThronesFinn Jones playing Danny Rand – we were told to look out for Shang-Chi news.

Keep in mind, this was at a time when in late 2015, the rumor mill was running out of control with stories ranging from Iron Fist being caught up in development hell thanks to in-fighting between Marvel’s film and television divisions to it being linked to Doctor Strange or even it becoming a TV movie instead. You can forget all of that except the Shang-Chi part.

Iron Fist is coming as a full-fledged Netflix series as originally intended with Scott Buck (Dexter) serving as showrunner, Scott Reynolds (Jessica Jones) writing, and Brett Chan (Marco Polo) acting as stunt coordinator. With Finn Jones cast as the title character and production beginning later this year for an expected 2017 debut, we can talk about Shang-Chi now, because it sounds like he is indeed going to be in Iron Fist as well.

We pitched this to our pals at That Hashtag Show who – alongside MCU Exchange – were able to independently confirm from their sources that Marvel is actively in the process of casting an Asian male actor for the role of Shang-Chi who will appear in Iron Fist, and that the show should start shooting next month. To anyone who caught this week’s episode 3 of the Total Geekall podcast, a show hosted by Screen Rant editors, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

JEPH LOEB REVEALS THE "IRON FIST" PROMISE HE MADE TO CLARK GREGG

With its lead actor now cast, Marvel/Netflix's "Iron Fist" series is speeding towards its start date. Finn Jones will play martial arts master (and sometime Hero for Hire alongside Luke Cage) Danny Rand in the 13-episode series -- but once cameras start to roll on the show, Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb will have to make good on a very specific promise. During a red carpet interview with Comic Book Resources at the premiere of "Daredevil" season two in New York City, Loeb revealed that "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." star Clark Gregg put in a request when it comes to the upcoming Netflix series.

"Before I get done, I have to make sure that Clark Gregg and Iron Fist get together," said Loeb. "I’m not saying Agent Coulson -- Clark Gregg has actually made me promise that he gets to meet Iron Fist. He’s a gigantic Iron Fist fan." While an on-screen crossover between ABC's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and Marvel's Netflix series has yet to happen, it does look like there could be one behind the scenes if Gregg gets his wish.

With "Daredevil' season two launching next week, the collaboration between Marvel and Netflix will have produced 39 episodes of television in one year, with two seasons of "DD" and the debut of "Jessica Jones." As the street-level universe continues to expand, Loeb spoke to how they go about linking the series to each other through references and characters.

"The thing that’s most important is that you don’t ever want it to feel like as you’re telling the story, [the viewer thinks] 'I don’t know what’s going on, I had to have seen something else in order to make sure of this,'" said Loeb. "We try to tell each story so that they are standalone but, at the same token, look -- it’s a lot like comics. Everybody’s comic is their first, so you want to be able to tell that story."

All 13 episodes of "Daredevil" season two arrive on Netflix on March 18.

Marvel’s Iron Fist Casts Jessica Henwick as Colleen Wing

With Daredevil season 2 now streaming and Luke Cage heading into production, all eyes now fall on Marvel Studios’ next Netflix venture,Iron Fist — the final new series set to debut en route to the planned crossover event The Defenders.Though initially not paid as much attention amid the buildup to more well-known characters like Cage and Jessica Jones, Iron Fist found renewed focus with the casting ofGame of Thrones’ Finn Jones as the title character and the prominence of Asian mysticism inDaredevil’s second season narrative indicating that the series might play a more prominent-than-expected role in setting up The Defenders’storyline.

Now comes word that one of Jones’ fellow Game of Thrones alums will be joining the cast as well, as it has been reported that Jessica Henwick will play Colleen Wing, the series’ female lead.

Debuting alongside Iron Fist himself in the pages of Marvel Premiere in 1974, Wing is a martial artist (specializing in samurai swordsmanship and chi control) of Chinese and Japanese ancestry who becomes an ally of Iron Fist upon his initial return to New York city from K’un-L’un to seek his family’s murderers and become a vigilante superhero. As one of Marvel’s rapidly expanding cast of martial arts-themed heroes of the 70s, she eventually became the best friend of police detective Misty Knight (for a time also Iron Fist’s love-interest), leading the two to found a private detective team nicknamed “The Daughters of The Dragon

Henwick first arrived on the acting scene in the 2009 BBC series Spirit Warriors (a role that made her the first woman of East Asian descent to headline a series in the UK), in recent years she has seen her profile raised thanks to small but noteworthy roles in a pair of huge franchises. Fans of Game of Thrones will recognize her as one of the Sand Snakes, Nymeria (the one with the whip), while her character of X-Wing pilot Jessika “Testor” Pava from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been building a significant fanbase online.

As Wing, Henwick will likely be part of Iron Fist from early on. According to the EW report, the series will open with Danny Rand arriving in New York having already mastered his Iron Fist powers — likely meaning that his origin will be delivered in flashback throughout the series (a’la Daredevil and Jessica Jones before him). In stepping into the role, Henwick becomes the first actress to play the character, one of Marvel’s more prominent second-tier players (Wing has been an ally of everyone from the X-Men to The Avengers at one time or another) in live-action. The early casting also makes it hypothetically possible for her to appear in Luke Cage (where Simone Missick is playing Misty Knight) as well, though no indication has yet been made that this is the case.

Daredevil seasons 1 & 2 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Luke Cage season 1 debuts on September 30th, 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jonesseason 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
