I'm considering getting one, and just wondering if anyone on here has it already and can share their thoughts on it.

Meet the Nest Thermostat

I have the eckobee3 and I love it. I was going to get the Nest but I'm Apple everything and they sold the Eckobee in the Apple Store. I bought it at Amazon though. Works like a charm. We can control our havoc system from anywhere.

We also got an alarm.com security system. We can control our security system from anywhere. Open/close garage doors. Unlock other doors. Cameras take pictures.

Really two amazing products.

I have it, but I only use it to control my heating system (I don't have traditional central air, I have ductless AC units). It's ultimately a thermostat.

The selling point other than being able to control it from your phone or computer is that it does auto scheduling (if you want it to - you can still set a traditional on/of schedule). When you first set it up, you manually turn it on and off for your heat/AC for a week. You also let it know when you leave your house (setting the unit to "away" will make sure your heat/AC doesn't come on when you're not in the house). After about a week, it creates a schedule of on and off times and away/empty house times, so you don't have to worry about it. This is how it is supposed to work, but that is not preferred by everyone, myself included. I have a traditional schedule set. I also disabled the auto away feature because of one weakness that I wish I knew about ahead of time. If you have the thermostat in a spot that does not get normal foot traffic such as, a rarely used hallway, the Nest will often mistake the lack of foot traffic for the house being empty and set itself to "away". You might then find yourself in your place wondering why your heat or AC turned off unexpectedly. You can resolve this by adding other Nest products, like the Nest smoke detector or Nest cameras to regularly used areas, like the kitchen and living room. The thermostat will report to the Nest that you're still home, if you rely on the auto away feature. This means that you'll be spending money on extra pieces that you might not have necessarily intended to. However, if the Nest is in a regularly used area, like the living room or kitchen, auto away should work nicely without needing extra equipment.

There are other Internet connected thermostats that work similarly to the Nest, such as the Honeywell (I forget the model name). However, I would probably still get the Nest today, if I didn't have one already and knew about the "away" feature because of its ability to be the center of a connected home. You can add the connected smoke detectors, cameras, door locks, lights, and appliances that are all made by the Nest company or participate in the "works with Nest" program. You can also enhance your experience with the Nest by using IFTTT channels and apps (Google it if you never heard of it).

Thanks for all the info so far.

The ekobee3 looks interesting too.

Seems that I have more homework to do before making a decision.
