Deadline reports that the celebrity astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson is under investigation by Fox and National Geographic for sexual misconduct. The investigation results from a report by journalist David McAfee in which two women allege inappropriate interactions with Tyson. Dr. Katelyn N. Allers, who is an Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Bucknell University, claims that Tyson allegedly groped her at an American Astronomical Society after-party in 2009. His former assistant, Ashley Watson, described a night where Tyson allegedly pressured her to join him at his apartment for wine, where she claims he then made several advances. Watson says she quit her job over the incident. These two allegations come a year after musician Tchiya Amet first accused Tyson of raping her when they were grad students.

The next season of Cosmos is set to premiere in March, but the producers have pledged to investigate the allegations fully. “The credo at the heart of Cosmos is to follow the evidence wherever it leads,” they said in a statement to Deadline. “The producers of Cosmos can do no less in this situation. We are committed to a thorough investigation of this matter and to act accordingly as soon as it is concluded.” Fox and National Geographic echoed this sentiment. “We have only just become aware of the recent allegations regarding Neil deGrasse Tyson,” the networks said in a separate statement. “We take these matters very seriously and we are reviewing the recent reports.”

Two more women, including a fellow astronomer, say Neil deGrasse Tyson is guilty of inappropriate sexual conduct.

Dr. Katelyn N. Allers, Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Bucknell University, told me that she was “felt up” by Tyson at an after-party following a meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in 2009. AAS didn’t have a mechanism for reporting sexual harassment at the time, but Dr. Allers says she probably would report the incident if it had happened today.

The second photo shows Tyson grabbing Dr. Allers’ arm and looking at her tattoo (which is of the solar system). Immediately after this photo, she says he decided to “look for Pluto” in her dress.
The groping incident allegedly took place at an after-party following the AAS meeting in 2009, which took place in Long Beach. This was supposed to be a lighthearted social event to show that astronomers could have fun, according to Dr. Allers.

“Tyson was there, and he was dancing and drinking and all of that at the party, so a friend and I decided to get pictures with him,” she told me.

But after the first picture was taken (above, left), Tyson decided to explore Dr. Allers’ tattoo. It features a realistic solar system that stretches from her arm to her back and collar bone area.

“After we had taken the picture, he noticed my tattoo and kind of grabbed me to look at it, and was really obsessed about whether I had Pluto on this tattoo or not… and then he looked for Pluto, and followed the tattoo into my dress.”

Dr. Allers said her experience was public and didn’t rise to the level of assault, but that it did show Tyson was capable of some “creepy behavior.”

“My experience with him is he’s not someone who has great respect for female bodily autonomy,” she told me in a phone interview.

Prior Report
Dr. Allers couldn’t have reported the alleged incident to AAS at the time, but she didn’t keep quiet about it, either. I confirmed with Dr. Michele Thornley, an associate professor of physics and astronomy at Bucknell, that Dr. Allers told her about Tyson’s behavior in 2013 when he was scheduled to speak at the University.

“Yes, Katelyn spoke to me about her earlier incident–I don’t think we discussed exactly what year it happened, but I knew that it was a few years earlier than our conversations about the matter. Katelyn described the earlier incident to me in the fall of 2013, after she was invited to attend a dinner with Dr. Tyson when he was to be on campus in spring 2014 as a speaker in Bucknell’s “Tech/no” series. I had recently served on a university committee with one of the organizers of the series, so I arranged to meet with that person and indicated privately that Katelyn did not wish to attend the dinner, and spoke in general terms the reasons why. At that time, Katelyn expressed that she did not want to pursue the issue more publicly (e.g., broadly inform the organizing committee, or try to get the invitation to speak withdrawn), so I talked with the organizer privately about two things: (1) to be sure that Katelyn was no longer expected at dinner, and (2) some general recommendations to avoid having female students meeting with him in small groups without additional members of the community present.”

Dr. Allers didn’t feel like she was in danger during her encounter with Tyson, but she did describe it as “uncomfortable and creepy.” That interaction also made her think twice about allegations brought by Tchiya Amet, a musician who says Tyson raped her in his apartment when they were grad students together.

“I think that he is someone that could use his position of fame and power in a way to try and take advantage,” Dr. Allers told me.

Another Allegation
As if this allegation wasn’t shocking enough, it came within days of my interview with Ashley Watson, a former assistant to Tyson who says she was forced to quit her job due to his inappropriate sexual advances.

Watson worked directly with Tyson for several months. She says that, during that time, he put her in an uncomfortable situation by attempting to persuade her into sex, and demonstrated his “predatory tendencies.”

In hindsight, there were red flags that she “chose to not pay attention to,” Watson told me in an interview.

Specifically, Watson said Tyson occasionally made “misogynistic comments,” and that he kept a list of overweight actresses on his phone to prove that women aren’t inhibited by portrayals in the media when it comes to health and fitness. He allegedly said it was untrue that women feel pressured to be skinny based on societal standards.

Interaction With Amet
Watson says she doesn’t know whether or not the serious allegations put forth by Amet are true, but that she sent her a message of support after her encounter with Tyson anyway. I obtained a copy of that message, which has been redacted to protect Watson’s privacy.

His Apartment
Watson says she had been working directly under Tyson, who called out Trump in 2016 by saying he would grab him by the crotch when they met, and that they got along well. That all changed, however, when he invited his underling to his apartment at around 10:30 P.M. to “share a bottle of wine” and “unwind for a couple of hours.”

Watson, who said she felt pressured to impress her superstar boss, told me she agreed to come in for a glass of wine instead. Upon entering his apartment, Tyson allegedly took off his shoes and shirt, remaining in a tank top undershirt. Unfortunately, the night only got more awkward as Tyson, who is married, reportedly put on romantic music and replayed the most graphic parts.

She says Tyson soon brought out a cutting board and a knife to cut blocks of cheese that he decided they would share. But before slicing the snack, he allegedly gestured toward her with the knife and made a comment about stabbing.

Watson says she took the comment as a bad joke, but it’s important to note that this type of “joke” is exactly what people in power need to keep in mind when dealing with subordinates. And it set the stage for a night filled with subtle intimidation and sexual advances.

“It was definitely a very weird power move,” she said.

Inappropriate Approach
Watson says Tyson started talking about how every human being needs certain “releases” in life, including physical releases. He reportedly mentioned how difficult it had been for him to be away from home for several months.

Watson says Tyson asked her if she needed any releases, and she responded with a story about sexual harassment she endured in the past. It was a smart way to diffuse a tense situation, but she says he was unfazed.

It was like talking to a wall,” Watson said.

She was getting up to leave when Neil allegedly stopped her, saying he wanted to show her a “Native American handshake” he knew. That involved holding hands tightly, making eye contact, and feeling for each other’s pulse, Watson told me.

When she broke off the awkward and incredibly intimate handshake, which he allegedly said represented a “spirit connection,” she attempted to just get up and leave.

Tyson then allegedly put his hands on her shoulders, and said he wanted to hug her, but if he did, he’d “just want more.”

Watson says she left Tyson’s apartment quickly after the inappropriate sexual comments and that, the next day, she confronted him because she felt he had betrayed her as a mentor. He reportedly told her in that meeting that she’d never rise through the ranks in her career because she was too “distracting.”

She Reported It
Watson says she decided to quit after the negative interactions with Tyson, and that she told the story to at least one supervisor in hopes that he wouldn’t hire more female assistants for the astrophysicist. That person reportedly supported her decision to quit, and said she should tell everyone she had a family emergency to avoid more uncomfortable situations.

Watson also reported the event to a relevant harassment hotline, according to a message she sent to Amet.

  • Amet has talked about the alleged encounter publicly since 2010

  • She had hoped to become the first black female astronaut
A woman says famed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson drugged and raped her when they were both grad students in 1984, and you’re about to hear her tell the story in her own words.

Her name is Tchiya Amet, and she’s a musician who once studied Galactic Astronomy in the graduate program at University of Texas in Austin. Amet says Tyson slipped her a “Mickey,” a drug used to incapacitate victims of sexual assault, and caused her to drop out of school.

Until the alleged incident, Amet — who reportedly changed her name from Staci Hambric — says she was on track to becoming the world’s first black female astronaut. But afterward, she dropped out of the program, suffered from PTSD, and sought therapy repeatedly.

I first reported on her story almost exactly a year ago, but since then we conducted a phone interview, revealing even more information I felt was worth sharing. Here’s the discussion:

The Alleged Encounter
The tragic story begins at the University of Texas at Austin, where Amet says she and Tyson studied astronomy. I was able to use the school’s records to confirm that Tyson and “Staci Hambric” both attended the university during the time period of the alleged assault.

Amet says it was at this school that Tyson befriended — and ultimately raped — her. She told me she was at his apartment when he offered her water, and the next thing she remembered was waking up to an assault.

I woke up in his bed; I was naked… When he saw that I had woken up, he got on top of me and mounted me, and I passed out again.”

Amet also sent me this photo, which she says is Tyson in his apartment around the time of the incident.

tyson-in-apt-1984-e1508808349154.jpg

This is Tyson in his apartment where the alleged incident took place, according to Amet.
After the alleged rape, Amet says she confronted Tyson in the halls at UT Austin. She reportedly asked him “how this happened and why it happened,” and he responded in part, that it was because they are “in this together.”

“I didn’t tell anybody because when I had been an undergrad, I had some issues of molestation by a student and a faculty member, and when I went to report it to the authorities, they both told me not to say anything because it would ruin the person’s life.”

The Public Confrontation
Amet says the next time she confronted Tyson was in public, at a NOVA event in California. She publicly accused Tyson of raping her in front of a live audience in 2010.

I didn’t know if anybody would hear me, but I said, “Today is national sexual assault awareness day in national sexual assault awareness month and I’m here because when I was a grad student at UT Austin in 1984 you raped me.”

I can’t say with certainty whether the content of her announcement was accurate or not, but I was able to confirm that she made the speech in the first place. At least one person remembers the whole encounter pretty vividly.

I have been unable to get in touch with the author of this post, and I’m still looking for more information. If you know anything, please contact me.
Why it’s Important

Since I first wrote about this allegation last year, a lot of people have asked why I decided to help Amet tell her story. After all, I’ve always been a huge fan of Tyson. I have shared his quotes countless times, and I even have multiple shirts that feature his face. But I consider this to be something entirely unrelated to how much I love Tyson’s work.

Pic-with-Tyson.jpg

Me with Tyson in 2013.
The fact is that I was left with relatively no choice in reporting this. I say that because I firmly believe that allegations of sexual assault should be investigated, yet in this case it doesn’t seem like that ever happened. I have actually seen numerous reports that go out of their way to say the claims shouldn’t be investigated in any way.

One atheist site published How The Allegations Against Neil Tyson Are Different From Those Against Weinstein & Toback, which specifically states, “People can and do lie.” Skeptic writer PZ Myers went even further, mentioning her accusations in a blog post called “Disgraceful Exploitation.”

A woman says she was raped by Neil deGrasse Tyson in grad school. She contacted me and asked me to share her story. But here’s the disgraceful exploitation that’s going on.

She did not know who I am, at all. She came to me because she was advised to…by slymepitters. The same people who have been indignant for years that women might speak out against harassers. They are trying to deploy this woman as a weapon.

Now, unfortunately, I looked at her story. I can’t say she’s wrong, and she’s definitely sincere, and I can’t rule out the possibility, but her supporting evidence is terribly weak: it’s her personal testimony, which I do not reject, with no other evidence. Her web page does not help her case at all, either — it’s a lot of astrology, and a scattering of youtube videos that are completely irrelevant to her claim. That’s it.

It’s worth mentioning that I asked Amet about her spiritual beliefs, and she said she took them on after the alleged incident as a form of “healing.” A private investigator I’m working with on this case says that could be a coping mechanism if she was victimized.

No Investigation
Amet has continually spoken out for years, making separate blog posts in 2014, 2016, and 2017. She even filed a police report, despite the fact that the statute of limitations on her criminal claims had expired (If more victims come forward, that limitation could be voided). Yet no one is investigating, and some people wonder why.

Reporters could be hesitant to talk about this because of their love for Tyson, or because of their distrust in spiritual individuals, but no matter what, it is completely unacceptable. I’m not saying you should believe Amet 100% and take her story at face value because I’m not doing that. All I’m asking for is a real investigation, so we can find out what really happened.

If you knew Tyson and/or Amet during this period, or you have information about similar allegations, please contact me at: davidgeecontact@gmail.com. You never know what information might help.

Tyson and his representatives didn’t return my repeated requests for an interview or reaction statement.

The issue to me is that if one man approaches you in a sexual manner its romantic but if another does it its creepy. We have to all - especially women - that a man approaching a woman in a sexual way has to be ALWAYS wrong 9good luck with that) or begin to recognize that being approached sexually by a famous person doesn't make him creepy or a predator but HUMAN specifically a male HUMAN.

Another note there are some women that feel they are slipping if a man doesn't approach them once a day because they put so much into clothing, makeup and hair that if they move around their day without a cat call they feel that something is wrong with them, they want male attention.
Wome as a Whole has to understand that men CAN'T differentiate between whether you are this type of woman or that type of woman. If you are not interested, dont play games just say its not happening and keep it moving, dont be so shocked and offended that you then want to get on social media to put someone on blast because he wanted to fuck you. UGH!!!

Man this is BULLSHIT.

They really trying to set him up and bring the man down.

Fuck outta here.

This right here....man if this isn't the biggest bullshit that men have to endure when it comes to sexual situations with women.

Bitch went to his place at 10:30pm for wine. What the fuck did you think was supposed to go down.

1st: i'm glad it's women accusing him.

2nd: this shit is getting out of hand. I'm bout to have women sign waivers if they gonna work with me.

3rd: "creepy" is in the eye of the beholder. A broad called me creepy after I stopped fuckin with her. Not WHILE I was fuggin her...AFTER I stopped.

To your points...

1. Wait...what?!?

2. Avoid working with women unless absolutely necessary and if you do, do not conduct business behind close doors or if it must be closed door situation have a 3rd party present.

3. You're ALWAYS either creepy, gay, or an asshole if you stop fucking with a woman BEFORE she's done fucking with you. That's Woman Logic 101

So not even Negro Nerds are safe from #MeToo?

IMHO and my experiences...

Women are creatures of FEELINGS.

Men are creatures of LOGIC/REASON.

A woman's words are like a magic spell: doesn't have to make sence to her, the words are just the hollow vessel used to deliver the desired outcome.

A man's words are bound by logic: it has to make sense to him because it's going to be critique on if it follows a rational chain of thought.

Which is why I'm pro due process: let's see if this [bitch's] account makes sense or is just a spell casts in efforts to get what she wants be it money, pity, or plausible deniability.

That's all #metoo is: an loophole for women to cast "spells" in the court of public opinion instead of be critique based on the facts in the court of law.

If I hear about 'dude did such and so forth to me' north of 2017 my first question is, "Did you report it to the authorities?" The second I see her lips start to formulate the word 'no' I'm done.
