Need Help With My Staffing Firm. . .

We just started a healthcare staffing firm specializing in anesthesia staffing, and I need some advice.

Basically, we're trying to recruit certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA's - the people that put you to sleep during surgery and the such), and we're using cold calling. As you can probably guess, no one's too receptive. But since we're a new company, we can't really rely on our name or previous CRNA's to spread the word.

Is there anything else I can try to get our name out there and generate some clients?

You gotta find a way to have them calling you instead. I don't know much about the industry but here are a couple ideas off the top of my head. Hopefully it helps.

  • You could run a job ad on Craigslist, Hotjobs or the more specialized medical job sites. When they call in/ email for info, pitch your business in a way where they don't feel like their being sold to.

  • Put the word out at medical facilities and schools where these candidates work and graduate from that your firm offers referral bonuses. Pay out on the referral when you get paid for the placement. Make sure the schools that graduate these CRNA's have your flyers/ business cards.

  • Make sure you have a good website and online marketing plan. Write and submit articles that would interest CRNA's to ezinearticles.com. Add a few sentences about your firm and link to your site at the end of each article.

The art of recruiting is all about the relationships you build with people...Remember everyone you meet is either a potential candidate or client. I'm curious, what your sourcing strategy? Do you have clients? How well are you resourced?

we purchased a CRNA list from a listing company, and got the name of about 2500 CRNA's nationwide. like i was saying, we are cold calling CRNA's and trying to get them to join our company cold turkey. . . . i know, it sounds foolish to me, too. but that's what our COO is recommending. . . i'm only 22, so it's kinda like i have to listen to what he says, even if I know it might not be the best idea.

no, we don't have any clients just yet, either. we just went live on October 15, so we are BRAND NEW. i've been reading articles about cold calling on entrepreneur.com and inc.com, but it really just doesn't work unless you are prepared to make hundreds of calls. since we're dealing with such a medical specialty, i feel that we need to build more brand equity and let the word spread around around.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a sales / mktg staff or plan??? I'm in the medical field as well and it's a tough sell...My wife is a travel nurse and they offer the best referral commission of anyone which gives them a competitive advantage. She considered becoming a Nurse Anesthetists but we decided to start our company and now we found out she's pregnant soooo we put that additional cost of school off for a few years. My advice is to see what the competition is doing and do something they aren't!!! You are definetly in a niche business where a majority of these nurses are white men! so you may have to focus your mktg / sales strategy toward, them which may or may not give you a competitive edge, depending on how you use it. These NA's also have the flexibility to make their own hours and work as independent contractors so I really don't see them taking fixed positions in hospitals etc. In addition, once you get nurses signed up, you may want to look into plastic suregon practices, Gastroenterologist practices etc. (People who perform out patient procedures) because they are probably looking for cost effective alternatives to traditional anesthesiologists. If you have any questions regarding this, let me know, I ran a group practice with several locations in NY for a few years.

Send me a PM, and I'll share some resources with ya....Does your COO have prior industry experience...In this business, the more successful of the bunch started out with a "key client" or two.

Go to the schools and recruit from there. Do what ever you need to promote yourself at the schools. Maybe you can give out some vests. That way you will start building some familiarity, give the impression that you are big, and you will be one of the first source of employment some of these people know.

Give talks in the schools about the industry, give tips, teach etiquette anything to get them familiar with your company.

This is one of the best way you can plant seeds in my opinion. You will not get huge immediate results but it should yield fruits later down the road.

Go look for events that you can volunteer as a company so you get your company out there in front of more people. Have your company do volunteer work at and for the hospitals where maybe at least once a week you are there in your company clothes, caps, pins, logos, etc. Any thing that will show that you are a real company out there.

Basically, you will be doing what it takes to get folks to know you and trust you and your company.
