Doc ended up on a loaded 76ers team because the league strong armed the Nets for money to join after the ABA folded.
The Nets didn't have or want to give up 3 million to join the league. So to avoid legal hassles the league arranged for Philly to pay the fee and for Doc to go to the 76ers. They got him for nothing and they already had
